A ghetto is a generally accepted term as the Jewish quarter in a town or city, or the place where Jews live in the greatest numbers.

And more widely used to mean any area of a city where disadvantaged/ethnic minority groups congregate, usually poorer, more rundown areas of town. I had no idea that it was becoming part of the vernacular. That's disturbing.

"Ghetto" is basically a "slang" word, used to describe the "streets", or basically anyone or anything that is poor and rundown (like Goreripper said).

Ghetto is when skanky teenage girls strut their stuff in clothing way too small for their bodies and walk around in public saying stuff like "dude, check this out" or "hey bitch, check this out" to one another. Since when did young girls call each other "dude" or "bitch"?! And they are even more ghetto if they do this while pushing around a baby stroller. Do I sound bitter? LOL!!

Ghetto comes from the Italian for 'Foundry' which featured in the 'original' ghetto for Venetian Jews in 16th century.

The following is taken from:

http://www.m-w.com/wftw/01apr/041901.htm

So all credit to Meriam-Webster.

Ghetto developed out of an Italian verb meaning "to cast," itself an outgrowth of a Latin verb meaning "to throw," but ghetto has nothing to do with throwing or casting out Jews. Instead, in the Venetian dialect of Italian, a ghetto was literally "a foundry," a place where metals are cast.

Jews in 16th century Venice, as in many other places, were forced to reside in certain areas. In Venice, the Jewish quarter was located on an island that was also home to a foundry. The local name for the island—literally foundry—was gheto.

When ghetto was borrowed into English in the early 1600s, it named the quarter of an Italian city where Jews were required to live. Over time the term was applied to such a quarter in other countries too. Eventually, ghetto also came to name a part of a city in which any minority is concentrated, especially as a result of social, legal, or economic pressure. Nowadays, ghetto is also used metaphorically for a situation that resembles a ghetto, particularly in terms of lower status or limited opportunities.

Ummmm....to me??? GHETTO is the HOOD.  Pretty much a place where I wouldn't be caught dead (no pun) in.  I could be wrong, but I associate it with porch people who commit crimes.  EEK!

from the oxford english dictionary:

2. transf. and fig. A quarter in a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited by a minority group or groups, usu. as a result of economic or social pressures; an area, etc., occupied by an isolated group; an isolated or segregated group, community, or area.

Hi.Ghetto simply means " low class ".Here, i'll give an example: Say you are about to go to a new city, and you need transportation. You have two choices, a taxi or a bike. If you like to be " ghetto ", then you would probably choose the bike.
