Subject: What year had the Best 90's Music?

Written By: Paul S. on 11/03/02 at 03:43 p.m.

This same topic was done in the 80's forum, and the majority conensus was that 1984 was the best year of 80's music.

What year of 1990-1999 had the best 90's music?

(Gawd I hope no one says 1999)

Between '92 and '93 because that was when rap was good.

Very Simple- 1991
The year of Pearl Jam 10 and Nirvana Nevermind.
Very exciting era of music.

I would say 1991, not just because of Pearl Jam and Nirvana though.  I think 91 was kind of a middle ground, grunge was comming in to its own, eighties bands were still popular, and the rap from that year did not suck.

I'm gonna go with 1994, with 1996 coming a close second.

I will say either 1990 and/or 1991.

Both of those years still held some of the diversity and originality of the music of the 1980's and the promise of continuous good music being made.

Alas, most music after 1991 failed my expectations and continues to dissapoint me heavily to this day.  :-/

I thought 1991 was a very good year.

Nirvana --- "Nevermind"
Pearl Jam --- "Ten"
Michael Jackson --- "Dangerous"
Guns N' Roses --- "Use Your Illusion I and II"
U2--- "Achtung Baby"

1991 had a nice mix of good 90's sounds like the initial albums of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, combined with a great left over late 80ish feel.  I believe Jodeci was out that year filling the urban/funk void.

But I don't think 1991 could compare to 1984.

Overall I would probably say 1991...Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stereo MC's "Elevate My Mind", Crystal Waters, etc.

Dance music peaked at the end of 1995...then everyone started putting out 130 BPM remixes of their downtempo songs & ballads so they would get club play...

Don't forget that Red Hot Chilli Peppers had "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" in 1991!!

'91 was definately a good year for music, I can't think of another year in the 90's that was as good.  How sad and pathetic that the 90's peaked so early.  The decade showed so much promise.

Agreed that it did peak so early. You guys reminded me of some other great stuff from that year.  Was Seal's 1st album that year too?  How about Jesus Jones and EMF, they were close to that time.

You're correct. They all had hits in 1991.

The best year for 90s music was definitly 1993. I think that was the year that singers and musicians really wanted to experiment with different sounds and all. Music had more rhythm back then.

Its tough but I would have to say between 95-98 because those were my High School years. I remember back in 95 you had bands like Green Day, Live, and Madseason. Also in 95 I remember when dance group Corona did "Runaway". Late 95-96 you had Alice In Chains and STP release records. Pearl Jam released No Code in late 96 which was the complete End for the Grunge Era. Nine Inch Nails was huge from 95-97 as was was Oasis. Also I remember when Dance Group La Bouche did "Sweet Dreams" and "Be My Lover". Also spanish Dance Group No Mercy had hits like "Please Don't Go" and "Bonita". Also In 96 Down came out with "Stone The Crow": a metal-pop tone I will never forget. 97 I remember that was the year I rocked to Robyn's "show Me Love" and "Do You Know What It Takes?". Other good tones that year were the Foo Fighters "Hero" and Everclear had a few hits. 97 was also the year of electronica like Chemical Brothers and Prodigy. Lastly I can't forget about the Verves's "Bitter Sweet Symphony". 98 I was listening to to rap like Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz. I was listening to R&B Artists Monica and Usher too. I remember "Yippie Yo Yippe I Ya" by R&B group Pulblic Announcement. Also Jagged Edge's "Gotta Be" was one of my favorite R&B songs that year. Finally, R&B group SWV hit it big with "Rain" which was a great song and a few months after broke up. I think in late 98 is when I started to get bored with music. Than Britney, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez came out and that was it for me.

Just for fun Top dance hits since 96: Sexual, This Is Tour Night-Amber, When I'm Gone-Rockell, It Feels So good-Sonique, Cruel Summer-Ace Of Base, Can't Getta Out Of My Head-Kylie Minogue(well thats disco actually), I See Throught To You-Angelina/DJ Encore, Ray Of Light-Madonna, Be My Lover-La Bouche, Please Don't Go-No Mercy, Durade-Sandstrom, and Chu Chu Train-Quad City DJ's. I hate that dance music is dead on Top 40 radio. I think dance music was good playing alongside Grunge and Gangsta Rap in the 90's. Than again If there was a big trend people would probably want it dead like Disco. In my opinion after disco was dead the dance form of music was freestyle, than in 1990 groups like C&C Music Factory and Technotronic fused dance with hip-hop music than after rap music had blown up dance music still had a spot on Top 40 radio. It seemed it like in 98 there wasn't alot of dance/club play music on Top 40 radio anymore I think in part because teen-pop had taken over dance music's reign.

That was Real McCoy.  Corona did "Rhythm of the Night".

Anyway, Let's look at each year in perspective:

90:  MC Hammer(love him or leave him), Faith No More, Deee-Lite "Groove is in the heart"
91:  Nirvana, Alice In Chains, C&C Music Factory
92:  TLC, flannel, Whitney Houston goes to the movies
93:  Tool(freaky clay videos), SWV, Ace of Base
94:  Lion King sdtk, Soundgarden "Black Hole Sun", Green Day
95:  Alanis Morrisette, Montell Jordan, Amber
96:  Bone Thugs N Harmony, Marilyn Manson, No Doubt goes pop
97:  Hanson, Chumbawamba, Spice Girls
98:  Limp Bizkit, Shania Twain helps country go pop, TRL
99:  Ricky Martin/latin in general, Rock/rap phenomenon, Vertical Horizon(real late, but it counts)

As you can see, it's just different people's POV's.  I would probably choose 1992, 1994, and/or 1997.

Feel free to include anything

No I would say 99 was more like Limp Bizkit. 98 was the year of rap and R&B Music. Examples: Mase "Feel So Good", Puff Daddy "Been Around The World", R. Kelly "Half on A Baby", Ki Ci&Jo Jo "All My Life", Jagged Edge "Gotta Be", Brandy & Monica- The Boy Is Mine", Madonna "Ray of Light", Aaliyah "Are You That Somebody?", Jay-Z " Can I Getta"...,  Montell Jordan & Master P "Lets Ride", and Next-"Too Close" and Busta Rhymes-"Put Your Hands Where".

Wow.  Until I got to the second page, I was feeling really young here.  I'm going to have to go with 97 as the all time best, followed closely by 99.  Those are the only years that, in my opinion, had a lot of good songs that I liked come out of it.  If you go too early in the nineties, you'll be revisiting New Kids on the Block and Milli Vanilli, which we all can live without.

ill pick any year between 1992 and 1998 because those are the years Mariah and Boyz II men were great, Busta Rhymes was awesome, Missy had the freshest beats, Aaliyah made her best songs, Mint Condition, Jodeci, Silk, R.Kelly( :o) were making good songs,Dance music was great,(excluding the Macarena, of course), the Gin Blossoms, Spin Doctors, Green Day, Alanis, Nirvana had hits

Id say 1994. Bands like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP, Radiohead, Pornos for Pyros, Bush and Green Day are on top of the music world. And MTV was still actually playing videos instead of TV shows all of the time. I miss that year!

Yeah I'll agree 100% with this poster. Those were the years I like too that defined the 90's.

I can agree with you, TV.  I was fed a healthy dose of freestyle in the mid to late 80's on radio mixshows, and in the clubs (I started going in '89) I was hearing hip hop, freestyle, progressive and house.  I remember a big transformation to techno (the 'blip' music as I call it) in '92.  In '93 I bought a lot of house and mixes by Brothers in Rhythm, DJ Pierre, etc.  '94-'95 I was hearing a lot of HI-NRG tracks from Cappella, Corona, Real McCoy, Whigfield, 2 Unlimited, SAW etc. and was having a great time at the clubs...such a happy vibe then.

Well... im probably alot younger than most of u... so ill say something late like 1999 or 1998. Well ur wrong... 1991 was all good... nirvana etc came out then. Heres what I think about the years (up till now)

90 - dont nkow alot bout this year... maybe had an 80s sound
91 - grunge and punk were aliove and kicking
92 to 98 - Pretty much no change between these years
99 - rap as it is known today becomes popular
00 - my favourite year this decade
01 - this year was quite boring... nothing new or exciting
02 - a repeat of 1998 (with new albums from korn, RHCP, foo fighters etc)

91'-For all the same reasons that everyone else has mentioned. 97'-mainly cause i am a big everclear fan and thats been pretty much there biggest year with several hits.  Though there was a lot of other good music that year too.  99'-I personally wasnt a big fan of that year but there where tons of huge songs that year there really hasn't been a year since with as many big songs.  It was definitely the year of pop music except for people like Kid Rock and Korn (another on of my favorite bands) and Limp Bizkit who where big then too.

Probably 1998- 1999, because it brings back memories, and I remember those years the most, as far as listening to music goes.

I'd have to say 1990-1994. 1990 Didn't have a lot of good music but Nirvana put out most of their early songs that year.
