Subject: 90s high school grads are the New Old School

Written By: Michael on 01/01/03 at 12:16 a.m.

Well, especially those of us that graduated high school somewhere in the early-mid 90s.  I think late 90s high schoolers are still slightly fresh....though barely.

I'm 27 years old and I graduated high school in 1993.  10 years man.  10 freaking years.

Darn I am old school.

Stuff I hear from teenagers and children these days---

"Pearl Jam?  Who are they?  Whose Eddie Vedder?"  "Nirvana?  Isn't that a religion?"  "Whose Tupac?"  "I remember watching Beverly Hills 90210 when I was in pre-school".

I am OLD SCHOOL.  I mean I know what I thought of people who graduated high school in 1983 back when I was a punk kid in '93.  I thought they were super old school with their Duran Duran and Air Supply vinyls, and now the tables have turned so quickly.  :(

I graduated in 89. I am just plain old. I'm still goth/punk and everybody thinks I am ten years younger than I really am.

Hey it's good to know that I am not alone in feeling old school.  I feel really old anytime children and teenagers don't know anything about the pop culture from the late 80s through the mid 90s.

These farthest back these kids today seem to know about are the very late 90s.  It's like nothing ever happened before 1999 to them.

I remember some of my friends were very upset about Kurt Cobain killing himself.  I had never heard of him and I didn't care.  I was in fourth grade at the time.

They darn well should know who they are.  If it wasn't for Nirvana and Pearl Jam they wouldn't have Staind, Nickelback, and other pathetic sixth-rate knockoffs.

That all feels like YESTERDAY for me too.  It seems like yesterday that people were bitching about Pearl Jam and Nirvana for deviating too much from the "80s sound".  It feels like yesterday it was like 1995 and all of that was all raw and cutting edge.  It feels like yesterday that Snoop Dogg and Tupac were brand new controversial rappers.

I'm just a few years younger then you Michael.  I graduated high school in 1996, and it's a shame that some kids today don't know any of that.  Though the bizzare thing is, it's not like what children and teenagers are listening to today are so different from the early and mid 90s.  Creed IS Pearl Jam.  Creed is a total wannabe Pearl Jam.  Lot of these post grunge bands are outgrowths of the early-mid 90s.  Lot of the fashions of today have kinda stayed the same too.

But being old school, darn that was inevitable though.  It happened to our stuff from the 80s, and now it's happening to the 90s.  The early and mid 90s anyway.  All of us that grew up in the late 20th century, during that time of the 80s and 90s are definately old school now.  And I like that phrase Mike, "the NEW Old School", as if we who graduated high school in the 1990s have replaced the previous people who used to be the old school.  It's true though.

I graduated in 1998 so technically i'm on the border between New School and Old School. I was only 6 months out of high school when Britney Spears first came out. The young people going to school now know who Puff Daddy is and when I graduated he was the hottest muscian out there. I'm not saying Puff Daddy's is good but I'm still on the border line I guess. When these kids grow up they'll listen to something different probably 80's and 70's music. I listen to some 70's R&B/Soul. I listen to stuff like Kool And The Gang, Prince, Commodores and I like Anita Baker. I am a 23 year old white guy and I listen to that stuff. Even people my age look at that music and think its ancient history. I like 90's music too but what I'm saying is you'll listen to some music you never you thought you would listen to once you mature and get out of high school.

I turned 16 in the Fall of 1990.  It was so great to finally get my drivers license!  The best thing was being indepedent and driving around town jamming music.  Albums I listened to back then while driving:

Beastie Boys-Licensed To Ill, 3rd Bass-The Cactus Album(remember that one?), Public Enemy-Fear Of A Black Planet, Bell Biv Devoe-Poison, Run DMC- Raising Hell.

I graduated in '93 too, I have my 14 and 12 year old cousins listening to old school rap and other 80's music.  All they knew was Britney and Nsync.  Gotta get these young people to listen to other music besides boy bands and crappy rap singers, females who think they are Whitney....... etc.....  Don't get me wrong, there is some good music out there, but, it's not like it used to be.

I'm also 27 and I also graduated high school in 1993.  The 1990s were the last decade I did any type of growing up in as a real "kid".  Sometimes I do miss the early and mid 90s, (I never really liked the late 90s that much, I guess I was too old in the late 90s to appreciate the youth culture of that time).

But even though I graduated in '93, and most of my teenage life was in the 90s, I think I have always had more of a fondness for the 80s.

Though, it does suck that kids today can't remember Pearl Jam or Nirvana.  C'est La Vie.

I'm there with all of you.  I graduated in '95 and was able to keep up w/ rock until about 2000, but since have lost all interest in this new, warmed-over garbage.  There's little to no originality and so many band have made their 'dark, evil lyrics' their calling card, like that makes them tough or cool...who cares?  Bring back the good music.  Sure, Ozzy, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio, and the like, had satanic undertones, but the music was good!  I could put up with a lot to hear some decent tunes. I have over 600 songs downloaded, and I'd say only four of them are post-2000.  It's sad.

Okay so I graduated in 1995! In 2 years it will be 10 years out of high school for me! WOW time has really flew by me fast! Anyways I felt old when 2 things happened to me.
1st: my cousin and I (we are the same age) were talking about Wham and how we use to love them so much back in the day. My other cousin (who is 16) overheard our conversation and was like "who is Wham?" We were like OMG she doesn't know who Wham is OMG are we that old?? We were totally freaked out by this. Now I laugh at it.
2nd: Is when I went to visit friends where I grew up we were at a grill and bar. I ran into a couple that I use to babysit for. 2 of the 3 kids were there eating pizza. They were so BIG!! I remember when they were babies/toddlers! The 3rd (the oldest) of the kids' was out babysitting that night. She was babysitting!! OMG she is that old already?? I remember when I was that age..wow that really hit me: I WAS OLD!!!
Okay so there is my thoughts. Enjoy! LoL TTYL :)

Keep in mind the situation and reverse it.  When you were 16 years old in 1993, and if some 25 or 26 year old back then brought up some song from 1975, how likely were you to know what they were talking about?  (like you did bringing up WHAM from 1985 to this 16 year old)

As my second posting, I just want to say that you are so right!  It's funny, I didn't think anyone would talk about it. The 90s decade seems so old, and now I know how my parents felt like when I laughed at them for listening to 60s music. Thirteen year olds do the same thing to me these days!

The thing was, the grunge rockers were notoriously anti-fame.  They courted fame and shunned it at the same time, so a lot of us that were not into them back in the early or mid 90s, would not have heard much of them.

Hey, come on - give some of us 'kids' some credit! I'm 18 and much prefer older music ( late 70s to mid 90s) than some of the crap that's around today. Maybe there arn't a lot of people in their teens who know a lot about music from the past, but its not because they're naive, they just haven't experienced it yet. I know quite a few people who are stuck in a certain era (I'm an 80s gal ;D), but just as many who think that todays 'pop' music is the be-all and end-all.

My friends think I'm stuck in the past, but I don't care. Everyone appreciates different music, and I'm proud that I like such a variety of styles and am not as narrow minded as some.

I think theyre more talking about kids who are HS freshman today, since theyd be like 2 years old when MC hammer came out, and like 3 when Nirvana came out. I know us mid 80's born kids have the advantage that 80's music videos were always on Vh1 in the early 90's, and same with the radio. I agree about kids our age, most of them know about old Green day, or Nirvana, Alanis, Tupac, Kriss Kross, Fugees, etc...

However i disagree about early 90's music being very much alive, i think its very much dead, and to me its pretty apparent everytime i so much as turn on the TV.

The term "old school" has been around for quite awhile. When I was younger the term "old school" was used more for how you thought and acted.
For example: in the 60's and 70's when women's liberation was still a novel idea, if you were "old school" then you still believed a man should open a door for a woman, you still believed it was the man's job to ask a woman out, you still believed the man should always pay for everything on a date.
If you believed that you shouldn't have sex before marriage you were considered "old school".
If you believed that you shouldn't get divorced you were "old school".
If you believed you shouldn't have sex on the first date you were "old school".
If you believed that you shouldn't live together before marriage or in place of marriage you were "old school".
A lot of people of my parents generation were proud to be called "old school" because they felt like it defined their generation and their moral beliefs.

In 1999, when I was 25 a person came up to me and said hey do you remember me? I said no. His response was we used to work together 10 years ago at some place I never heard of. He was in his 40's. That would mean I worked when I was 15.  ::)

I graduated when I was 17 in 1993.  I know it has been 10 years but I really don't look or feel much different.  I have 2 kids and one on the way, a job, a house...all the typical adult things.  I'm not immature but I'm not a fuddy duddy either.  I've never stopped dressing my way and don't have any problems pulling it off either....yet.  Put it this way, I was with my 4 year old son at the barber shop the other day and the lady asked my son if he wanted "his big brother" to hold him.  I was totally flattered and told her that she made my day.  It's totally ironic because when I was 16, everyone thought I was older.  Now I'm 27 and people get me confused for 16!  Oh well, I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.  The funniest and most disturbing thing happened recently.  I was working at King's Dominion (an amusement park here in Va) recently on weekends just for some extra money and for the nostalgia.  I had worked there all through high school.  Anyway, I was working in a bowling game and this other guy that worked there came up and started shooting the shit with me.  We were fooling around with the bowling game and somehow I ended up saying that my wife was a really good bowler.  He looked shocked and said "Your wife!?".  I was taken aback and was like "Ummm....yeah."  He asked how old I was and I told him 27 and that I had 2 kids as well.  He asked me how old I thought he was.  He was wearing normal clothes so I figured he was some sort of management.  He looked to be about my age.  I said 25 and he said "No, try 19".  It was pretty funny.

What is funny to me..I manage a pizza shop pt..and most of the employees are later Gen Yers..you know..15-18 years old..and I feel ancient next to them! The remaining employees are all 40-43..so I feel young! But it is funny..discussing music and world events from the late 80s to early/mid 90s..and they have no idea what I am talking about. I mean, they can't help when they were born any more than I can..just makes me feel old..and I'm just now about to hit 27! I am right on that 80schild/90schild border. Funny when we were talking about the war for example..the first Gulf war..they didn't remember it..and they did not remember Cobain's suicide..which doesn't seem THAT long ago when I think about it. In my childhood we feared the Soviets and I remember the Tienanman Square and Berlin wall events and discussing them in school..foreign events to these kids. The late 80s and early 90s were very dynamic as far as the world and pop culture goes..but once the mid 90s started..things definitely changed and became a more subdued era here in the USA..changed on Sept 11 2001. I also notice how conservative teens are today. They make me feel like a hippe from the 1960s sometimes!

Well I think that the dividing line between old school and new school is roughly between the high school class of '94 or '95 and '96 or '97. I think there is a pretty substantial difference between those years. I can tell because I was born Jan '77 (class of 95), so I saw this firsthand when in school. An example.....during my senior year (early 95), I was talking to a few buddies (one born in May 77 and the other two born in 78)about the first music we were into. Me and my 77 born friend mentioned Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran Duran, etc. My 78 born friends, on the other hand, couldn't go back further than NKOTB, which one can argue really isn't a true 80s group (their popularity seemed to peak in 1990 or 91). Now, this is just one example but I've seen other examples (e.g. when the Berlin Wall fell I remember being so releaved that the Soviet threat would be no more, but you'd be hard pressed to find people a year or more younger than me who had the same feelings). I don't know why one or two years make such a difference, but I've seen it with my old eyes.

So I guess I'm really the last of the "old school", huh?

By the way, I think that one surefire way to tell if someone is old school or new school is by seeing how much shorthand they use when typing (you know, the LOL's and "u"'s for "you", etc.).

1993 is better than 2003!!  I was only 9 in December that year and know mostly the adult contemp hits (had the radio on when I went to bed), and a few other pop artists so I'm not completely clueless.  I watched VH-1 a lot those years.  1995 was my favorite year for music from the '90s.  That was before the dumb late 90's pop and out of the backwash of the late 80's.  Now there's stupid artists like Daniel Bedingfield, Jon Mayer and everything else.  I listen to anything from any era, 60's through today, depends on my mood.  I graduated 2001, those of you that graduated in '98 don't seem old to me anyway, you were seniors when I was starting hs so I wouldn't say you're old school yet.  That was only five years ago, nothing's really changed yet.

I haven't even graduated. I don't listen to nirvana much now but when I was younger I would listen to it in the car because my parents liked it.

And one of the tv shows I remember to watch everyday was Beverly Hills 90210.

I think teenagers nowadays know a little about old music, not much but still a little (I'm not talking about me but when I told my friend I liked Duran Duran he knew about them and man he just turned fifteen).

On other side when I say I like Molly Ringwald, they go "who?". And I don't know ANYONE offline who did not watch Not another teen movie and NONE understood half of it. I mean I watched it with my bestfriend and I was like "omg john hughes highschool" "oh that's molly!" "shit thats pretty in pink on the wall" and she would look at me with this weird expression on her face and ask "what are you talking about?".

C'mon..

I didn't really know who Molly Ringwald was until a few years ago. I saw  "The Breakfast Club" a few years back and then watching all those VH1 shows I made the connection between Molly Ringwald and the Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club came out in what 1984 or 1985? I was 6 years old at that time so I was kinda young to remember something like that.
