Subject: Mariah Carey

Written By: Nefertari on 03/21/03 at 11:21 a.m.

Do you like her or is she annoying?

We have to admit, that voice of hers is supernatural. 8 octaves, people...8! HOW DOES SHE DO THAT!   :o :o

Isn't the normal range for a female only 4 or 5?

No offense, but I find Mariah Carey annoying because she's overrated and I can't stand her voice.  :-/
Her voice is a gift like Sally Field's character on "The Flying Nun". I'd prefer the beautiful voice of fellow Long Islander
Deborah Gibson than Mariah Carey. (no offense to Mariah fans)

It can't be eight octaves. Nobody's voice has that big a range. At the most I've heard it, it's three.

The average human vocal range would encompass around an octave and a half. To put this into perspective, Ringo Starr can hit five notes on a good day, and the vocal range on Take On Me by A-ha goes from A-1 (an octave and two inclusive below middle C) to E1 (an octave and two inclusive above middle C). On a good day, I can manage that song.

Mariah: I couldn't stand her voice when I was like 12 or 13 years old. I thought she was terrible. Than  I matured and I started to listen to more music. I was mainly into Rock and Metal during the grunge era. Anyways, She had a good run from 1990-1997. I think from 1999 on she wasn't that good. She had a couple good songs from 1999+.  Whenever I think of 90's Top artists I always think of Mariah Carey and Pearl Jam off the top of my head. She does have a wonderful voice. I just think she had her fame and thats it. Her wearing next to nothing drew a lotta backlash and than the whole TRL thing when she stripped off her clothes. You just don't do stuff like that. I'm glad she got help for herself though. That had to be a tough thing to do. She seems much more happy now which is good for her. She was just going through something very rough emotionally from 1997-2001. In the future I would like too see explore her gospel roots more and maybe do a gospel type of album. "Anytime You Need A Friend" explored her gospel roots. Love or hate her that woman can really belt out a tune.

Dude, what is with the Sally Field/Flying Nun obsession?  It's a little much don't you think (you mention it in all your posts)?  And very strange too.

Mariah carey, eh?

I never liked her too much, but yes, I do admit that her voice is quite unhuman-like.

No wait, that's not the word..more like alien-ish.

No no, it's spiritualishly-above normal...hmm, no, that's not it either.  Okay, it's whimsical and overdimensionaly-existing, yet very solid-like and emotionaly balanced.  Um, nevermind  :(

Let's just say, I've never heard another voice quite like hers    :D

Mariah Carey, 1990-1992 - Bland, overvocalized r&b crap.
Mariah Carey, 1993-1996 - Actually has some decent pop songs.
Mariah Carey, 1997-Present - Goes insane, forgets how to wear clothes, loses any control over her voice she ever had.

My sister used to love Mariah Carey.  Now she can't stand stand Mariah Carey.  Funny how much Mariah's changed since the early 90s.   :-/

I have a tendancy of poking fun of bad TV shows. It's a phase. Why "The Flying Nun"?
Because I'm tired of poking fun of reality shows like I did on my high school journal last year. (inwhich I graduated)

And on the animated series "Clerks", "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfieffer" was poked fun at on two episodes. Inwhich I saw last month & decided to poke fun of a cheesy sitcom myself. And I discovered that It started a cult following (like Star Trek & The Brady Bunch) amongst tv fans.

It's been going on for less than a month. It'll stop when I stumble upon another bad show.

BTW, the comment (comparing Mariah's voice with The Flying Nun) was a negative comment about Mariah Carey. No offense to fans of both Mariah Carey & Sally Field.

And the infamous sitcom that starred Sally Field as an airborne novice isn't mentioned in all of my posts.

I have to admit liking that song Someday back in the early 90s, but I've never really paid much attention to her music since then.  I will say this though, she certainly has changed her image since the early days.

Agree & It's true... Atleast I wasn't into Mariah Carey through out the 1990's and I don't care much about her right now.
Three words: "Behind The Music"

She actually had a "True Hollywood Story".  :D

Dude you can just barely get 8 octaves on a piano...I REALLY don't think that even Mariah's voice is that varied.
Now I like a lot of her songs from the mid-late 90's (my favorite is "Always Be My Baby") but now I think she is too old. And I can't STAND that song "I can make it through the rain" or whatever cuz she just WON'T stay consistent with her voice quality and it's just freakin ANNOYING!

Yeah... I posted that "Through the Rain" song earlier as "worst of 2002".  Singing breathy worked for Marilyn Monroe; but she never claimed to be a singer with an 8-octave range.  I think Mariah showed us her full range in her debut "Vision of Love" (which I thought was a pretty damn good song), but she has a 3½ - 4 octave range, at best.  If it had not been for the efforts and charity of many others, Mariah would probably still be singing back-up for Brenda K. Starr at the Massapequa Best Western Lounge.

She's over.

8 octaves? Ummmmmmm.......that'd be no. Not possible. The singer from Sheriff (When I'm With You) and Alias (More Than Words Can Say) has a 5 octave range and that is considered to be one of the best (too bad he couldn't have sang with better bands).

Mariah? She's done. Minor hits at best now.

Whoa....are you SURE it's 5??  I mean find you the C below the bass clef, go up five octaves and you're higher than any female singer can really *sing*

Yes. Definitely 5. His singing teacher Mona Coxson (a canadian legend herself) confirmed this fact just after Sheriff released their album.

It's pretty impressive!!

It's a five-octave range...but in the early nineties it was reported that she had a 6-8 octave range. I remember the day Vision of Love hit #1 and Kasey Kasem said she had a 7-octave range.  Conflicting information leads to confusion. But her official site now says 5 octaves. I can tell you that on the former site (Sony/Columbia) it did say it was more. I'm a huge Mariah fan from the beginning but I understand her 'annoying' traits. She had huge and sudden success and some major bad time so who knows what that does to a person. Perhaps that why she's become the person we see today. Anyway...here's a link if anyone cares.

I still like her.  She's lost some of her vocal edge since the 90's, not to mention her mental breakdowns.

But on the plus side, she's still HOT.   :o   :)

Her actual music has been pretty bad at worst and good at best. She is a total hottie though I think..maybe drugs are messing her up now, but around 1996 she was beautiful.

I used to like her music, but recently it's all been cr@p, with the exception of "Heartbreaker" and "My All".

As for the range thing, 7 octaves does sound a bit extreme, but if anyone could do it, my money's on Mariah. :)

I miss my range...let it be known now ppl, smoking is indeed bad for your vocal chords...I'm figuring that if I don't quit soon, in about 5 yrs time I'm gonna sound like Chad Kroeger (Nickleback) - not a good thing considering I'm a girl!

Not to mention that Mariah Carey isn't much of a looker either.
She only dresses up like a "Springer" guest to get attention.

i liked most of the mariah songs all the way up through 1999. Since then its been a bunch of crap, what pisses me off the most is how she mauled maybe my all time favorite song "Candy" by Cameo. Ludacris on the remix was the only one i could really stomach rapping over the "Candy" beat, da brat shauna and whoever that other guy was...hell no! it was just screwed up.

also imo, she just doesnt look that good anymore either.

Mariah's first record was the first CD I ever owned, and I had a mariah poster up on my wall (for "entertainment" purposes)  I even joined her fan club and framed an autographed picture of her on my wall  (not to mention, i taped all of her videos and special tv appearances, like on Arsenio Hall and all the awards shows, and clipped out everything about her from magazines)

Up through Music Box, I was pretty obsessed, but now she is gross.

She looks like a ho'd up version of the chick from planet of the apes, and she has cankles.  Plus she's insane. Oh yah and her new music sucks butt.

I like her, but I do agree she needs more clothes! I don't like most of her new music, with the exception of Through the Rain.

Hero
Music Box
Whenever You Call (w\ Brian McKnight... now that was good! )

One Sweet Day (w\ Boyz II Men)
Through the Rain
Can't Take That Away

are my faves.

i have also heard that about 8 octaves, that she could hit notes only dolphins can make or something lol...but i doubt that is true

i never liked mariah, but at first i had at least respect for her, now lately she acts like a sl*t (stupid thing keep editing the word out, but i cant help it that she acts like one...). and the way she sings now, its like shes always whispering, it doesnt sound nice at all. i know she has this obsession with whispering instead of talking to save her voice, but it sounds like she also sings that way now to save her voice ??? i think she is very annoying now :-/

I have to say that I did like her early songs, and I do think she is very talented. However with that talent came an ego, one that on several occasions reared its ugly head when she didnt win an award she was so sure that she would get and was almost gloating over before it was awarded   >:(

OMG, tell me you're NOT serious... that was singlehandedly the biggest piece of crap for the year of 2002!!!  She sounded like she was going into respiratory arrest!  That song stiffed at #81 on the pop chart. Mariah has scaled her tour way back to more "intimate settings" (reads:  can't sell tickets to larger venues) and her 2nd single didn't even reach #81.  I'd venture to say that she's OVER.

Holy cow, I thought I was the only guy who liked that song back in the day!

Yeah, Mariah is kindof over-cooked now.  Her voice doesn't even sound of this world anymore, with all of the over dubs.  Listen to her in the new Busta song....it sounds like 50 mariah's singing at once.  It's like she's lost her confidence and now thinks she needs to doctor everything up in the studio.

Mariah had a great voice and good songs in the early-mid 90s. Butterfly is the last album of hers I liked. I only liked a couple of songs from Rainbow but she completely lost me with that Loverboy song and Glitter garbage. Now she sounds like she's whispering when she sings. It's obvious she didn't take good care of her voice over the years.

Mariah has never been as popular here in England as she is in America.
She's only had a few singles inside the top ten.
She is undoubtedly an excellent singer, but I don't like most of her stuff as its just too whiny and dramatic!
