Subject: When did you first start using the internet.

or hear about it??  I know now the internet as we know it actually started by universities and the government in the late 60's/early 70s. The actual format we use for e-mail was debated a long time by computer scientists, and the current format was adopted in 1977! Most of the information on the internet was ftp files..and e-mail..the first US President to use e-mail was Reagan in the mid 80s..the British goverment also had it at that time. The first website was designed in 1990..but it didn't seem like the "explosion" started til much later.

I first saw the internet in my senior year of h.s. in 1994..the school's only computer teacher had one system online at 4800 bps as a novelty (Compuserve was his ISP I remember). I sent my first e-mail in mid 1995 when I started college at Ohio State (first year all students had e-mail accounts)..but I don't think it "took off" til maybe later 96, 97?? My high school, which only had typewiters and a few apple II gs when I started in 1991..by 95 had one online computer..now every classroom as young as 1st grade here is connected..

The tech explosion of the 90s is trully amazing..and I think today's 23 and under crowd were the first to REALLY grow up totally with this technology.

I started using the internet in 1998 at my school.  :D
I got used to it for a couple of weeks.
I also nearly got in trouble by clicking to other links (all clean, tough) while I was suppposed to be reasearching the Incas.
It only wondered off to other links for a day to understand more about the internet.

I guess it was 1996 when I first used it.  Though back then it wasn't really any big deal to me, but today I use it all the time to do just about everything, except I don't use it for shopping cause to me its annoying have to wait from something to come in the mail when you can go buy it the same day at a store.

I first heard about it in the mid-1990's on Radio Netherlands, which at that time was my favorite shortwave station.  I first used it at my library, but finally got it at home in 1999.  Shortly thereafter I found this site, and the messageboard that was on it at the time, and I've been here ever since.

The first time I went on was in the fall of 95, when I was a high school senior. That seemed to be right around the time that the Internet began to explode.

However, one of my high school's computers was linked via modem to a server that was involved with weather data, and being that I was (and still am) into weather, I downloaded data as far back as the fall of 92, when I was a freshman (although this really isn't the internet...) BBS's were big in my school in 93, 94...just before the Internet revolution really took hold.

I guess the fact that I went to a specialized science school may have meant that we were into this stuff a bit before most people...

First I saw of it was a college course in computers in '94.  First I participated was visiting girlfriend in Masters program at University of Minnesota in '95.  I hooked up to it myself in  early '97.
'96-'97 were the years I remember the world going crazy for it.  Wasn't it '96 when AOL went to unlimited server time and a whole lot of (angry) customers couldn't get online?

The first time I used the internet was in the spring of 1989 when I was in 8th grade, I had small computer that was a prototype of the world wide web.  I could almost do everything we do now, look up information for school projects and stuff like that.  It was the internet, but it wasn't the web.  At that time I didn't think anything of it.

The first time I used the world wide web was in 1994.  I remember "www" taking off like a rocket in 1995.

But I don't remember it really becoming a part of the mainstream culture and everyone having an email account and surfing the web until like 1999.

I live (and in 1992 lived) in New York...then in Queens, now on Long Island (but only for three more months!). I got into weather in the mid to late-80s, after a hurricane threatened the Miami area, where I lived in those days. I am going back to school this fall (hence the three months) to study meteorology...particularly hurricanes, so obviously I have a great interest in this stuff.

Since you were from Boston, surely you remember "Gloria" and "Bob"...and the Perfect Storm...

Global warming...I can't recall when I first heard of it...probably in the late 80s as well.

Netscape...it's amazing to think there was a time when that was the browser that everyone used. When did Microsoft Internet Exporer become "king"?

My first website visit was probably the Weathernet site produced by the University of Michigan. Yahoo was the first search engine I used.

For me it was '95.  My girlfriend at the time went to a different college.  Just before she left town for the spring semester, she gave me her phone number at her dorm and e-mail address.  I don't recall saying anything about it because I don't think I had ever seen an e-mail address before!

As far as the web, I was probably searching for new and exciting beer drinking games back then. ;D

it was sometime around the beginning of the 6th grade for me, i was still 11. we went from old IBM with a 5.25 drive and Dos to a PC with Windows 95(Hewlett Packard 120mhz & 16MB Ram). It was weird because i was used to "The Oregon Trail" type simple stuff. But by 7th grade i was already into online games(AOL offered Gemstone 3 and Battletech for free back then) and sometime in 7th grade i got Warcraft 2. I remember it still felt like this new frontier to explore in middle school, but by 10th grade it was getting so hectic

We used these as search engines as well. I think that year was 1993 while I was at USF. Heh we all kinds of problems connecting! people dont know how good they have it today!

I first started sending e-mails in about 1991 using the JANET network at the university where I work.  I was one of the first among my colleagues in the Physics department to start using e-mail.

I think it was in about 1995/96 when I first starting using the internet.  I still only had shared access to a machine at work so didn't really start using in a big way until 1999 when I got my own office and machine.

We got connected at home in 2001.

I remember the first time I actually used a computer at all..1984 or so, I was in 2nd grade at an 'experiment" school in Boston (aka got a lot of $$ while other schools suffered)..they were Apple 2 E maybe ?? Not sure about their power and speed (really damn slow compared to now obviously)..but the only programs we really used were BASIC and LOGO..a kinda forerunner to more indepth graphics design programs like Paint then Photoshop, etc..it was so simple..a kid today would laugh at it..basically a "turtle", if commanded in very lengthy commands about angles and lengths would make a line..maybe one of the 8 beautiful colors available at the time. It was so funny..around 88 (6th grade) I remember the Quincy School district had a LOGO contest for middle and high school students..the winner did an impressive work of a church..took him 10 hours I beleive...could be done now on photoshop in minutes. Always thought when I was in 2nd grade one day there would be a computer that you could learn almost "anything"..only 10 years or so later it appeared! The internet is truly amazing!!

Yes...LOGO...I was involved with that stuff in first grade (84-85). I had tons of fun "programming" the turtle...back in elementary school computer class was the only one of the "special classes" (art, music, computer and gym) that I enjoyed to any degree.

I think we had Apple II's...I remember as a six, seven year old going to a ton of computer fairs with my father. I saw all the latest products, like Apple IIe, Apple II GS, etc. Essentially Apple was king back then (although Commodore 64 gave it a run for its money). Also got a glimpse at early versions of MS-DOS (which at the time I thought had something to do with Mr. Do's wife (from the video game)).

Strange how when you think about how computers changed. Although Apples tended to have them, many of the computers at the time had no mouse. All you had was the "A" drive, the "B" drive (whatever that was for) and the "C" drive. Getting 256 KB of RAM was powerful. And of course, unless you were in some important government role, there was no such thing as a modem.

Of course, being a product of the New York City public school system, where "budget cuts" are a way of life, I worked with those computers well into high school. At least for basic computer courses, I think we used 1983-era IBM's until my junior year, when we finally got decent computers in the lab.

Yep those were the days Criz, Napster still had the best download rate of any of the "clones" that I have used lately, Sound Galaxy, Bearshare, Kazaa(sucks because it is limited to 128bit and below files-there is a crack but not many people know of it so its almost pointless) and finally I am using WinMX which is decent since I am starting on my anime collection.

Started modeming in 1982 (before the movie "Wargames" came out and *everyone* got a modem for christmas and boasted about being a hacker  :P ) via an Apple ][+ and a 110 baud suction cup style modem.  Exchanged messages and swapped "warez" on a primitive BBS that was set up (without permission) on a bank computer located in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle.

First heard of the Internet (I heard it called "ArpaNet") when the Morris Internet worm wiggled its way thru the net and into history in November '88.  Tried out a chat system via the Internet for one month in the summer of 1992.  It didn't impress me much at the time, however it did garner some contacts for sourcing out the latest issues of "Phrack".

By 1996 (when remembering my exposure to the InterNet in '92) I couldn't figure out why everyone was raving about it.  Until a buddy got online in '97 and I saw that the InterNet had matured to graphical web pages!  :)

Since then, i've seen it go from dial-up to wide-band cable modem; pipe bombs to the current kiddy porn hysteria.  I wonder what the next new hysterical flavour will be?   :)

From looking through the posts, I didn't realise that the Internet modem was formed as early as 1982.  :o

I worked in administration for a Financial Advising company in 2001 and that was when I got my first taste in web sites.

Privately, I have only been on the net for the past three months or so. I also recommend that people use cable rather than their normal modem, it will save you throwing your computer out of the window later on.

The first time I made use of this tool was probably for a project on pandas in late '97. I didn't start using the Internet regually until '01.

Recently I watch a TV program that went through the last five decades through the eye of the media.  They showed a clip of this show from around '93 and they were explaining "the Internet" and what an "e-mail" is etc.  They even showed the viewers how to make a happy :-) and a sad :-( face for e-mails.  I laughed at that part.  ;D

Want to read the ultimate book on early computer history (1950's-1980's) and fully understand the personalities, and origins of some of todays computer systems?  Read "Hackers" by Steven Levy.  You won't be disappointed.  :)

Hey, I'm new to these boards, I just started today.  I was born in 1983, and I think the first time I used the internet was in 6th grade.  My Middle School was right next to the public libaray, and my sister's friend showed her and me how to get a Hotmail account.  I used that for a while, then in 12th grade, I got Webtv, and now I have my own comptuer which I got for my high school graduation in 2001.  Wow, that was a long time ago.  8)

;)First computer I ever used-the Apple IIGS.They had it at the partial care program I went to.  I remember really having fun doing cards, stationery, signs, and banners with Broderbund's "Print Shop"! I also liked "World Games","Gauntlet" and "Zork" that the program had for the IIGS! Now I'm strictly an IBM-Compatible user, more power, they can do more! 8)

I started using the Internet on the same computer that I'm using right now at a Youth Center. It all started for me in 1997.
Unfortunately some wise@$$ put me on a site that had those disgusting pics of mangled people/limbs on it.

ah, the memories.

I first used the Internet back in '94.  At the time I was going on BBS's to get games & stuff for my Atari ST computer, and the community college I was going to didn't have any Internet like a university would. (I was lucky enough to dial on their VAX network).

My friend from HS told me about using e-mail and IRC chat rooms from his college account, so I figure I try to find a way to get on there myself to save on long distance charges.  The first ISP in my area came on the scene and offered Net access through a BBS interface for $10/month which was pretty awesome at the time :)

So I bought books to learn stuff like FTP, Archie and all that crap.  Newsgroups were my favorites, surfing the web on the Lynx browser was great (no excess graphic junk back then) and I'm addicted to IRC to this day. :D

In '95 I transfered to a university where they had a full UNIX shell account where you "really" used the Internet.  Also used the first Mosaic & Netscape browsers on Macs which crashed all the time :P  But my Atari ST could handle the text based stuff, using a modem to dial-in of course, and I used it till I got a PC in '98.

When that happened, everything changed in a few short years.  Stuff like IM, Napster and online games was the norm at computer labs and still is. :)

Right now I use the web for just about everything except online chat.  Still miss using BBS's and UNIX shell accounts though... ;)

???I cannot understand for the life of me why some people are either afraid of or not interested in computers and the Internet. My roommate is hesitant to use my computer and AOL even though I've offered to teach him! I sometimes think it's his disabilities(he's hard of hearing and has schizophrenia)but since he is intelligent and can read well I don't know. I am also disabled (COPD,Bursitis, diabetes, depression),and I find the info and support I get from the 'net is invaluable. I just wish my roommate would open his mind to using the 'Net instead of watching TV all the time. Sorry if I sound like I'm complaining.

Well, I used an early incarnation of the Internet in 1981.  It was at my mom's work on a dumb terminal connected to a bank of IBM 360 mainframes.

Needless to say, since my mom was a programmer, I grew up with computers.  I owned my first in 1979 when I got an old Commodore PET, then in 1981 we got a VIC-20.

I continues with the VIC-20/C-64 systems until 1987 when I first got introduced to the PC.  It was like replaceing an old B&W TV with a colour set!  The differences were so much!

While I had a 300 baud modem with my VIC, I never used it much.  I did hook it up to my C-64 and used Quantum (the forerunner of AOL), but at $20 a month there was not much to do there.  I did occasionally use COmpuServe, but it was even more expensive.

When I bought my first PC in 1989, I got a 2400 baud modem with it.  ANd I got my first exposure to BBS systems at the time.  I immediately fell in love with them, and was running my own in 1990.

I continued like this until 1993.  By this time I was running a giant multi-line BBS with over a gig of storage and 3 CD-ROMs full of softweare (this was a huge system at the time).  But the economy at the time made it impossible to justify spending $200+ a month for phone lines (like most BBS owners, I never charged for my service).

I first met the World Wide Web in 1994.  At this time it was real basic, and did not impress me.  I used it a few times, and went back to BBS.  When I tried it again in 1995, it had improved a lot.

In 1995 I made my first web page, and discovered IRC.  Since then, I have been a hopeless addict.  While things come and go many times.  IRC largely died in the last few years because of the porn and spam.  Sims Online was a big addiction, but the cost was to much and in July of this year I quit that too.  It just never fulfilled it's promises.

Mr.80's,

Your post really takes me back!  I loved the early 80's computing.  I was an early BBS'er myself... mostly for the phone phreaking and anarchy stuff.  :)  It's funny to think that all those anarchy and box philes were like gold then are now easy to get off the Internet!  :)

I was mostly on Apple boards at the time.  Very heady days indeed!  :)

OMG, I almost bought an old Apple, just because I wanted to run a door game they had that was not available on any other BBS system.  Do you remember "Spacer Quest"?

No, I don't.  But then, I had limited access to games because I had parents who were against computers... said they would lead us into drugs and gangs.  ;D  I had to go visit some friends who had an Apple ][+ whenever I could sneak away.  I do remember having a cracked copy of Lode Runner a couple of weeks before it's release date!  For those two weeks or so I had any gamer I wanted in the palm of my hand! <evil grin>.

I don't remember the exact year, but it must have been in the early 90s - or better to say before 1996. Because I remember when I was in college (from 1996) I already had my first meetings with the Internet behind me. So I suppose it must have been 1994-95 or maybe even earlier. I have first used it at my father's workplace. When he had to go to work during the weekends and he took me with him I could use it. I loved it from day one. I got hooked so when I went to college I used to go to an Internet Cafe frequently.

I think I actually started using it six years ago, during my senior year of high school; although at the time I didn't really know how. I just clicked on the Netscape icon (from the Macintosh desktop), which opened up the homepage. I wasn't sure where to go from there, although I did know a few web addresses.

After I graduated from high school and moved on to college, that's when I began using it on a regular basis. I also became familiar with the Windows OS/desktop at the time, too. For one of my classes I had to use the Internet to do a report, so I started to get acquainted with various web sites. By that time I was using it just for fun as well.   :D

I started using the Net before either of my parents did. My dad began using it in the summer of '98 (after his office upgraded their computers) and my mom started using it one year later.
