Subject: Why do some people dislike NASCAR so much?

Written By: NASCARnut on 11/29/03 at 05:26 p.m.

Why do some people put down NASCAR as being a 'redneck non-sport'? I've seen people come in the NASCAR chat on AOL and harass the fans. I can see NASCAR being boring for some people(namely road racing fans),but to pick on NASCAR fans is WRONG. And some of the things that anti-NASCAR people say about the drivers is disgusting. They call Dale Earnhardt Jr"a drunk",Jeff Gordon"gay" and these misguided fools even say nasty stuff about Dale Earnhardt SENIOR,stuff like 'good riddance' and he 'deserved to die'! And they say stuff like Tony Stewart is "gay" because he happened to PRETEND to shave his legs in a Coca-Cola ad! Some of these accusers need to learn the old adage"Don't judge a book by its cover" and APPLY IT!

Well, those who say hes gay or hes .....  are just a bunch of punks that have nothing else better to do....  But the simple fact is,,,  most nascar races, they just go round and round and round and round.....  It gets labled a redneck sport, cause its roots are in the south.  Even RIchard petty said " nascar is a southern sport".   Except the past 12 years its become popular nationally.

Ok...first off, speaking for myself, I just think it is boring.

As for the redneck thing...I like rednecks.  I should have been born in the south, not Utah.  Now I don't mean the stereotype of a redneck (drinking, wife beating trailer trash), but those Southern guys driving pickups...good work ethic, not afraid to get their hands dirty.  The ones that take pride in family.

As for people being glad Dale Earnhardt is dead...that is just wrong and those people need to get a life.  I am not a race fan, but I was saddened.  I know they take great care in making sure the cars are safe, but accidents happen.  He was too young to die.

I like NASCAR because I grew up watching it,people like Richard Petty and Cale Yarbourough made racing exciting to watch. I grew up around cars and car culture because my brother-in-law was a mechanic. He got to work on lots of AWESOME muscle cars, such as the Pontiac GTO and the Dodge Charger,he even worked on vintage Camaros! Most folks only see the actual RACE,not what goes on in the background. The drivers actually have to learn how to drive a NASCAR stocker,it looks on the outside just like the cars that us ordinary folks drive. But inside it's a totally DIFFERENT beast. Those engines pack a 750-horsepower punch, while we drive to work in a mere 6-cylinder. And the drivers are real personalities, some of them more than others. What other sports create a Dale Earnhardt Junior, a Jeff Gordon, a Rusty Wallace,or a Tony Stewart? There is more to NASCAR than meets the eye. But I do understand how it can be boring to those who like "in-your-face" sports like football(Which I also LOVE!).

I personally have nothing against NASCAR. Sometimes I just leave it on (mostly because there's nothing else better to watch). But I have to admit, watching cars going round in sircles (read: ovals) gets kinda boring, but crashes are a nice change in all that mess.

I don't know anything about NASCAR but I like a bit of banger racing.

I personally think it is very boring.  I think it would be more interesting if they went 1-5 laps and not 100-500 or more.  I don't understand the whole points thing either.

However, a few years ago I went to Bristol to see the Christmas display that they have.  We actually got to drive on the track.  I thought it was cool.

I think it gets labeled "redneck sport" because of the some of the fans that get a little too obsessed.  The ones usually shown on tv are the ones that are obviously drunk.  Also, a lot of fans around here have put the window clings in their vehicles about Earnhardt, Sr. I'm assuming as a memorial.  I guess the reason most people think it's redneck is because people do things like that.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry that Earnhardt died, it was a tragic accident

I think it could be cool if they turned RIGHT every now and then ;D

I think the timing of the pit crews is fun to watch, they have to be very coordinated.  But something about the fact that whoever has the better car usually winning and the fact that nobody ever seems to pass each other bugs me.

I live in a city that happens to have one of the more popular race-tracks.  I can tell you that on a race weekend we have about 140,000 people come to Bristol Tn. to watch the race, and they come from all over the country, not just the south.  I'm not a fan myself, but I don't put people down for being a fan.

I guess the reason people call it a "non-sport" is because they are driving cars, not running or chasing a ball...but what these people fail to realize that it takes a lot to sit in a car and drive for hours, the heat, the strain, the tension, the concentration.  I know I would probably pass-out if I had to do that!  It is dangerous, and people do die while racing.  But these guys know what they're getting into when they become drivers.

You just need to understand that the people who are saying these things in the chatroom have nothing better to do with their time.  These people like putting down other people, and if it's not on the Nascar site, it's on another site.  The best thing to do is to ignore people, because they get great satisfaction in putting others down or getting them upset.

Part of the anti NASCAR sentiment is from open wheel racing fans who see stock car racing as being inferior. You have to admit, stock cars don't go as fast or are as challenging to drive as open wheel cars. Also, people who prefer watching races on road courses don't like NASCAR cause it's all on ovals. Road courses are more of a challenge to the driver. Since NASCAR is a stock car circuit with almost all its races on ovals, fans of other types of auto racing look down on it as being a watered down version of the sport.

But I have to admit that most of the anti NASCAR sentiment is just from its image as being from the south, and the south's traditional redneck stereotype of being rural and unsophisticated.

Well, as a European I don't really know about the rednecks thing but as a Formula One fan I can only second to what Satish_1 said: it is the ovals. For me it isn't about open wheel racing vs. stock cars. I wouldn't mind stock cars if they would race more on road tracks. I personally find the ovals simply boring. IRL is open wheel racing but because of the many ovals I don't like that either.

Look at what happened to that guy from 90210, his name was
Jason Priestly I think, or was it Luke Perry, he was seriously injured.

I can't put NASCAR racing down, because I don't understand it as a sport.  Television does not do it justice as it can't show the sheer speed and spectacle of a race, thus I'm not that interested watching on tv. Someone mentioned above how the drivers are in phenominal condition, physical and mental.  There are many technical aspects to NASCAR in the pit, on the track, etc.  My Bro-in-law is part owner of a car once driven by Earnie Irvin.  I wanted to meet him at a race in Nashville, figured he could get me in, but he won't do it, and it ticks me off.

I'm a NASCAR fan. My Dad used to hate it. I remember I was watching a race and my Dads like why did Rusty Wallace pit? If you get to watch it enough you get to understand a little more. People have mad fun of me and I don't care. What I don't understand is people watch soccer and golf. To me those sports are boring to me but I'm not going to bash if somebody likes them.

Look at the stats: Nascar has become more popular since 10 years ago and lot more national. I like Football, Basketball, and watch baseball a little bit too so its not like I don't watch other sports besides NASCAR racing.

Jason Priestley was in an open-wheel,open-cockpit Formula One type race car,not a NASCAR stock car.By the way,my fave NASCAR driver(Tony Stewart)came up through the USAC and IRL(Indy Racing League)ranks before coming to NASCAR,so he's had plenty of open-wheel racing experience. NASCAR does do two road races a year-Sirius At The Glen(Watkins Glen) and the Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon(Sears Point). When you get the NASCAR guys road racin',it gets really wild as far as bang-ups are concerned! Also lots of hot tempers!

One question, though...what does NASCAR have to do with the 90s? LOL.  ;D

Well the 90's was the decade that NASCAR really exploded in terms of popularity. Dale Earnhardt won his 7th Winston Cup Title tying a record that Richard Petty held in terms of Winston Cup titles won. Jeff Gordon(as a fan I don't like Gordon) also brought the sport into national popularity. It could have been put in the 2000's section of this site but somebody put it in the 90's section.
