Subject: Remembering the music styles of 1998?

Written By: Tv on 03/21/04 at 06:20 p.m.

What do you remember musically about 1998? 1998 seems to be the dark year of the 90's from what I have seen on these boards. 1992-1996 was remembered as grunge/alternative and gangsta rap era's. 1997 was remembered for Hanson. 1999 was remembered for Britney Spears. Opinions on music in 1998 please. Doesn't anybody remember Savage Garden or R&B group Next? What about Dru Hill? I'm surprised people talk about teen-pop all the time when they think about the late 90's.

People think mostly of teen pop in the late 90s because that was what dominated the mainstream. I think a lot of people might remember 98 as being a big year for the two boy bands Backstreet and Nsync.

98 was also a big year for bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit too though if you remember. I really remember 98 being a mixture of music that was popular.

Yes, I do remember Savage Garden. I even have the first CD they put out because I loved the single " I Want You". I also remember Next with "Too Close" and Dru Hill as well. My favorite song from Dru Hill was How Deep is Your Love, from the Rush Hour Soundtrack.

Nothing really.

Marcy Playground & New Radicals...new acts I liked...turned out to become "1 Hit Wonders".  :-/

No thanks to the teen pop explosion, nu metal, overflow of hip hop, and the complete downfall of MTV with a certain show called "T.R.L."  :P

i remember at the start of the year The Spice Girls had a new album out, Puff Daddy was still putting out songs, Elton John was still #1, and the Titanic soundtrack was selling like crazy. Matchbox 20 finally got into the top10 for a little while after nearly a year on the charts.

i remember out of nowhere a ton of rap songs made it to the top 40, like "gettin jiggy with it" "get at me dog"(by a guy who came out of nowhere to re-energize rap in the late 90s, DMX), "Ghetto Supastar" "Make em say Ugh" "Deja Vu" "Still not a player" and more.

There was some good r&b that year, K-Ci & Jojo, Xscape, Montell Jordan, Dru Hill came back at the end of the year, Tamia... I remember how r&b got re-energized after Hip-Hop soul was over with young acts like Usher, Destiny's Child, Mya and 3 young ladies that were former princesses of the hip-hop soul era, Aaliyah Brandy and Monica. Which brings us to the teenybopper anthem of 1998, "The boy is mine" god i hated that song. Couple that with the fact that this song came out just a bit before Total Request(Live) came out in late spring/summer , as if the song weren't overplayed enough, now it had to be the most overplayed video and #1 every freaking day. Until of course...

The backstreet boys and N sync dropped new videos for Total Request. I remember earlier in the year, i thought the backstreet boys had 2 videos out, but then i found out there was ANOTHER 5 guy group with a teenage blonde lead singer and some 27 year old guy. And man it just never stopped, Savage Garden, 98 degrees, 5ive, All Saints, Divine, pop groups coming out left and right. And of course the Queen of the late 90s pop, Britney Spears, came out towards the end.

Thats not all that was on MTV though, rock was coming back. Metallica had a hit with "fuel" and speaking of metallica, doesnt pretty much all of the late 90s nu-metal sound like some metallica knock-off? In Metal, Korn Limp Bizkit and Rammstein also got tons of airtime, but not so hard-rock also was there with Harvey Danger, Barenaked Ladies, Aerosmith, Goo Goo Dolls, Marcy Playground, Fastball and such. Godsmack put out a good album in 98, but i remember MTV playing "Whatever" in 1999.

Overall, 98 was a diverse year with some cool music IMO.

I agree "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy And Monica got tiresome after hearing it for the 100th time.

Yeah I remember rap songs were commercial on Top 40 radio that year. That was rap music's most popular year ever was 1998. I don't think rap music will ever top that year again.

Savage Garden was not a boy band. Divine was alright. They had 2 hit songs with "Lately" and a cover of George Michael's "One More Try" which was in 1999.

I remember the first time I heard N'Sync I thought they were ripping off the Backstreet Boys. Then I find out they have the same manager.

1999 was the year it went all wrong in my opinion. I believe music starting to go in the right direction for the first time in a long time.

Rammstein was ok. I don't like Limp Bizkit or Korn.

In 98, Backstreet Boys were alot more popular than nsync. Everyone really started to like nsync around 1999 and 2000.
