Subject: The Definitive 90's Song

Written By: mikey on 4/8/2000 at 1:54 p.m.

The Definitive song of the 1990's was Nirvana's SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT. It was a song that singlehandedly put pop music in the background. Who would have ever thought that a song with confusing lyrics could have made such a big impact like this one.

So far I have not been able to come up with a definitive 90s song but I think you may be on to something here. For a good while, the Seattle Grunge sound was extremely popular and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the song that broke Seattle Grunge into mainstream American culture. It was the era of goatees and plaid shirts.

I think I'd have to choose a Nirvana song. Not so much because any of the lyrics reflect the mood of the 90's. But, because the 90's marks the decade when alternative music became accepted & it was Nirvana who kicked off that trend--for better or for worse. That upset alot of people into "alternative" music. But, it made me happy for the bands I like, 'cos they could finally make a decent living off of their hard work. And I think that's wonderful. Viv
