is there anybody out there, age about: early twentys who feels like they are part of some sort of forgotten sub-generation?

you might get what i mean if you :

grew up with: star wars, he-man, strawberry shortcake, smurfs, 321contact, garbage pail/cabbage patch kids, back to the future, ghostbusters, e.t., tranformers, the rubicks cube, big wheels, friendship bracelets, atari, big hair, slouch socks, jeans jackets, care bears, you can't do that on television, 80's mtv, etc......

you got a little older and: you were sooo into metallica, nirvana, faih no more, pearl jam, danzig, rem, tool, nin, hole, mazzy star, rage against the machine, tori amos, sonic youth, radihead, temple of the dog, smashing pumpinks, portishead, soudgarden, alice and chains the singles soundtracks etc........with your flannel shirt, ripped jeans w/thermal underneath, combat boots..angst, emotion, and, youth energy: it seemed to be running thru everything like a current !!!!.......

AND THEN CAME THE MID90'S....

EVERYTHING STARTED TO SUCK THE ECONOMY BEGAN TO BOOM EVERYTHING GOT GLOSSY AND MEANINGLESS OUR WHOLE GENERATION WAS SOLD OUT BY MASS MEDIA.

and now...2000: mid90's glossyness and greedyness seems to have completly taken over..(does anyone remember: before cars were round, before everyone on t.v. looked air brushed, when songs were actually about something?)....our little generation seems to have gotten lost on the shuffle...everything is about stocks, retirement, "the60's",(boomers) OR teen bands and playstation(their pokemon loving children) what about us!!!!!!!!..we are in our early 20's, the prime of our youth, this is our time to shine.......

if you: sympathize w/ any of this, or would just like to comment or share views, feel free to email me at : girl79@020.co.uk p.s. let me know that we're "still alive"......

oops--i'll try this again. i just posted a blank page accidently. it's strange, girl79, the things you listed as growing up with are EXACTLY the things i grew up with, yet i'm 30yrs old. maybe what you & i consider "growing up" with are 2 different things. but, i do understand what you're saying & where you're coming from. viv

I'm right there with you. I don't know what it is, but we seem to have been skipped over somehow. There's a generation of "tweeners" between the baby boomers and the Gen X'ers that doesn't understand what happened to our cultural identity. Nobody ever asked me if it was OK to put Nirvana on the forefront of culture. I hated grunge rock, and I'm glad it's gone. Others might have loved it. I just want my Magnum P.I. and Knight Rider back, dammit, what happened? It's like somebody stole our childhood and commercialized it.

Will someone please explain this whole concept of "commercializing" one's youth. Do you have to live it and feel it to understand it? Personally, I am glad Tom Selleck and David Hasselhoff matured into new roles. Don't get me wrong, I loved the eighties. However, since I had to grow up, it is a relief to see that other people, especially celebrities, got older and developed new styles and tastes too. It is a nice reminder that I am normal (well, mostly) and I fit into the changing world.
