Subject: Something to ponder?

Written By: Liz on 6/1/2000 at 6:28 p.m.

I was wondering if anyone agreed me with me on this issue.

Recently mentioned by a certain someone posting messages, we all need to get with the times, you know...into the "90s" But I was thinking, the 90s is over. So shouldn't we be getting with the 2000s?

(not that I have anything against the 1900s-now)

I am in the 90s! To: Goreripper, I have been trying to argue that 2001 one issue forever, but on one agrees with me. Class of 2001 is the first class of the new millenium (cuz I grad that year!!!!!)

You gals aren't thinking logically. Fact is, every second/hour/day/week/month/year/decade marks both the beginning and end of a millennium (a "millennium" simply being a 1000-year period - look it up in the dictionary, folks!). So if most folks want to say that this year marks the start of a new millennium, that's their choice - it isn't wrong!

And yes, the 1990s began on January 1, 1990, and ended December 31, 1999. Any argument to the contrary is totally unfounded...

Thank you 80smusicfreak. We are so happy to have your contribution to our little piece of mind! I want to argue there was no year zero. The millenium begins 2001, don't rain on my parade!! :*o(

ABC World News Tonight has started a Friday segment called "21st-Century Lives" yet we are still over six months away from the 21st Century. Most people assume that when the first two digits of a year change, that means the start of the first century! And every year since it restarted in 1984, the game show "Jeopardy!" has had a question pertaining to the end of the 20th/beginning of the 21st Century. In 1984, such a question baffled all the contestants, who bet everything they had and everybody lost everything so they had to bring in three new contestants for the next show. One of the more recent answers pertaining to this was, "Name the site of the final Olympics of the 20th Century." At least no one answered "Atlanta." (The correct question was, of course, "What is Sydney?")

Subject: 0AD

Written By: Goreripper on 6/5/2000 at 7:51 p.m.

There was no Zero AD because when the "AD/BC" system of date-keeping was introduced the world was still using Roman numerals--and there's no Roman number for Zero. ergo, the first AD year was 1 -- so all centuries start with the 1 year and end with the 0 year. ANy argument to the contrary is warmly encouraged. :) The first century AD was I to C, not I to XCIX -- that's only 99 years!

Subject: even that isn't correct though..

while it's true there was no year 0, the record keeping over the last two milleniums leaves a lot to be desired, so it's actually been debated that even 2001 isn't the next millenium.. that's its still a couple of years off.. so to be honest.. YOU'RE ALL WRONG!

hehehe.. just had to rain on your parades..

ChuckyG.. who's anxiousily awaiting the next leap second... so he can update his VCR clock >grin<

Everytime i visit this webboard everyone is arguing about something assanine. can't you people think of anything important to discuss? Everyone is always in such a rush to prove each other wrong instead of encouraging new ideas. Who cares if we are living in the 90's or the 00's? What difference does it make? The year is simply based on one guy's birthday. Now you don't want me to get started on that crap but I think that would be a more relavant topic.

I have yet to come accross anything "important" on this or any similar website! However, I think your opinion on "that guy" would be a fun way to spice up this forum.

Subject: To everyone that read my original ?

Written By: Liz on 6/7/2000 at 7:35 p.m.

It was something silly I came up with. I had no idea it would cause this much controversy!!! As for everyone trying to prove me wrong, I really don't care. It was just a dumb question I thought of and posted. Can't we all just get along??

Subject: Personally.. I just think it's something people

Written By: ChuckyG on 6/10/2000 at 5:03 p.m.

can talk about.. so they do.. I could care less about the whole millenium thing myself...

and as far as the website goes.. the 90s are defined at 1990-1999.. no one is discussing that new "Hanson" album under any circumstance >grin<
