Subject: child of the 90's

Written By: Aimee on 10/7/2000 at 11:09 p.m.

I know, I know this is a rip off of the child of the 80's thing, but just deal.

I remember the early 90's until the 'grunge' thing it was pretty much like the 80's. So i'll start from there.

I remember in first grade knowing all the words to 'smells like teen spirit', and thinking Michael Jackson was white.
Everyone being upset over kurt cobain.

Getting up in the morning and watching power rangers. Saturday morning cartoons were taken over by disney.

I remember when the world stopped for the Simpson trial, and everyone being upset that he got off.
I remember Leo DiCaprio being larger than the titanic, and every girl in my class had his bio.

Everyone thinking Romeo and Juliet was only a movie.

Rock died and pop and rap overthrew mainstream. Christina A. copying Madonna. Madonna becoming a dominatrix then a stately elitist.

*snicker* It's okay. I'm an actual "child of the '80s" and I don't relate with quite a few of what they list... I think it's mainly a "teen" list, anyway.

Yeah. Grunge rock really shook the foundations of culture and music to the core. Grunge was cool in that it created something new in a stagnant pool of nothingness.

FIRST GRADE? YOU WERE IN FIRST GRADE WHEN 'SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT' WAS RELEASED? Damn, I was in seventh grade... I was twelve... okay, I feel old now... and I knew that Michael Jackson was black because I had semi-grown up with groups like the Jackson Five, but I viewed him in the '90s as a freak.

I was one of those upset over Kurt Cobain. I remember barracading myself in my room and spending six solid hours crying. I had a crush on him and I loved Nirvana's music. I was SO a teen.

LOL. I never watched cartoons as a little girl, so it's shocking to realize just how many cartoons I ended up seeing in the '90s. I watched "South Park" before it was "cool" to watch it (but haven't watched it in a year), and also watched "Dr. Katz" when it was on the air. And one of my favorite TV shows is "Daria", so... um... there.

: Simpson trial, and everyone being upset that
: he got off.

*nods* I remember that as well. I hated it. I also hated when those L.A. cops got off for beating that guy... the one who said, "Why can't we all just get along?"... I forget for some strange reason his name, but I was upset when they were acquitted as well.

: I remember Leo DiCaprio being larger than the

LOL... I remember that too. Except I thought he looked like a little boy, even though he's a good three - four years older than me. Damn, though... he must have some sort of youth serum.

: Everyone thinking Romeo and Juliet was only a
: movie.

Not me. Read the Shakespearean play in seventh grade. It was the first Shakespeare I'd ever read. And then in freshman year of high school, we watched the Franco Zefferelli version. I like the newer version better.

: Rock died and pop and rap overthrew mainstream.

I don't think rock is dead. I think for awhile, rock will hang out in the back corner, but then after more people get into the whole "boyband/blonde bimbo" backlash deal, rock will make a resurgance. With rap, I can honestly say I was there when rap... GANGSTA rap... became mainstream.

THANK YOU for seeing that Christina Aguilera is a TOTAL rip-off artist! I've seen Madonna do that shtick before, and that was some fifteen years ago. As for Madonna's changes... well, I welcomed the "Rain"-era change, as well as a couple other changes, but now I think Ms. Madonna's turned into a schitzophrenic. I used to think she was cool, that's the sad part.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

His name was Rodney King
