The best cartoon to come out of the 90`s has to be
by far South Park, followed closely by The Simpsons. Agree or Disgree? and why?

I love them both, but don't forget "Beavis & Butt-Head" (always loved those dumbasses) and "The Ren & Stimpy Show" (still the best Nicktoon ever, especially the original John Kricfalusi episodes). Of course Ren & Stimpy went downhill once Nickelodeon fired John Kricfalusi…

while I love South Park, it's not always that consistent, whereas I can almost count on a Simpsons episode for a good laugh.. one of the few shows I can watch over and over again..

Ren and Stimpy was great before John K got fired, and Beavis and Butthead was great before Mtv started getting burned about Beavis' doing stupid shit like starting fires..

if there's anything the 90s did better than the 80s, it was in cartoons that wear geared towards adults, and not designed to sell toys from the onset

of course.. there are still the little kids cartoons that seem to be going downhill (stuff designed to sell toys more-so than their predessors)

The resurgence of anime (Japanese animation) happened in the 90s and, I must say, I am impressed by a lot of the things these guys are animating...

Besides anime, there were/are such shows as Liquid TV, Aeon Flux, Beavis And Butt-Head, Ren And Stimpy, The Simpsons (this show rules!), The Maxx,
The Tick, Freakazoid, Spawn, Dr. Katz (a personal favourite), Duckman (another one), and, yes, to a certain extent, South Park...

I think though to label anime as Japanese animation is a mistake though.. stuff like "Ghost in the Shell" is a far cry from say Pokemon or Card Captors which is probably the worst example of Japanese animation to ever appear..

not that I think you were making that comparision, but just want to make sure no one else does..

Yes, it should be the other way around....Pokemon and Tenchi and Ah My Goddess ....ect aren't REAL anime. My fav. anime = Vampire Hunter D, Violinist of Hameln, Vampire Princess Miyu, Ninja Scroll, Berserk, Outlaw Star, and Ghost in the Shell in that order. I'm not saying those are the best I just like them. I also like the Count Cain and Angel Sanctuary mangas.

That's a matter of personal taste. I don't like Pokemon, Card Captors, and the shows which air on the US airwaves, but all the tykes in the family love like these shows, and then I think about when I used to watch Gatchaman, Mazinger Z, Candy Candy, Robotech, and such, and there must have people at that time who thought these shows as unexemplary of good animation (a lot of animation fans still do), but I really loved these shows...

My tastes now run in how animation can be another medium to tell a fascinating story (or how a plain story can suddenly turn innovative and fascinating). It's funny though, the Japanese animation which I like is from the 70s and 80s...
Titles like Wings Of Honneamise, Akira, Lupin III, anything by H. Miyazaki, and old (VERY old) 70s animation that most (North Americans) haven't even heard of. The 90s did have good animation, but the stories were mediocre at best (except for the PatLabor films and The Record of Lodoss War series)...I don't know. I can only speak for what entertains me.

That is all well and good, but what about all the marvel cartoons such as the x-men, spiderman, incredible hulk etc. These are all classics and are still running. They are all serious catoons the same with the Japanese cartoons which some times have hiden meanings which are lost the translation, but my opinion is that cartoons should be funny and not serious. That is why both the Simpsons and South Park have been so successful. Don`t get me wrong, the Japanese cartoons are good but more humour please!!

The Simpsons and South Park (along with the Marvel/DC animated series) are popular in the United States (from what I have seen), but ask anyone, over 25, in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East about Candy Candy, Mazinger Z, Hatchi, Iron Man 28, etc and you'll get a more "lively" (in between nostalgia and fanaticism) reaction from them. So, I wouldn't underestimate the power that these series/animation has on people just because they take themselves a little more seriously about their works...

Humor is good. I enjoy humor, but it shouldn't all be just one genre - which is what I see in American programming and in the latest of Japanese animation (still the best animation around).

Japanimation could use some lightheartedness and humor- Like, "Don't Have A Cow, Man."
