Subject: Best anime?

Written By: Andrew Skeen on 1/24/2001 at 10:29 a.m.

Hey, guys...what's the best anime of the 1990s? Although we both know that Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best of all time, what are some others that are at least 'noteworthy'? Please don't post with any long-running, kiddie-type 'anime' like Sailor Moon or Dragonball Z.

And what is wrong with Dragon Ball? I grew up watching that in the 80s and I never missed an episode of it - now the all the family kids are into it too, which I find pretty amazing in itself (I wonder when Doraemon will come). Neon Genesis is, for the greater part, junk when compared with Nadia or Oneamis No Tsubasa (i.e. The Wings Of Honneamise).

Dragonball Z, even today, is not the REAL stuff, i.e. it's been cut alot. If you go to Japan, or somehow get an uncensored version, you'll see alot of pornographic scenes. Do you support that kind of anime, or are you loyal to a 'fake' or the original DBZ? My main complaint with DBZ is the insanely long power-up times. Even you have to admit that spending an entire episode powering up just to blast one guy it a little extreme. It doesn't leave much room for plot and character development (one of the finer points of Evangelion). As for Nadia and Wings of Honneamise, they're good, but they're no Gunbusters, which is probably the second best anime ever made. At any rate, EVA and Gunbusters thrash Nadia and Wings of Honneamise.

I said Dragon Ball, NOT Dragon Ball Z. As for Evangelion - it's a load of garbage for the most part (there, I've said it). The plot is fickle for half the series (intended to build to something, but it doesn't work for me...). The Wings Of Honneamise and the Nadia series stand out because I believe they go beyond the audience of otaku and pretty much anyone can view and enjoy it (The PatLabor films and Akira are the other films that come into mind) - and so did the Dragon Ball series of yore (not a lot fighting, but mostly a "journey" and "adventure" type of show). Animationwise, Evangelion is top notch when it comes to robotic designs, but the character designs are just plain godawful. Gainax has done better - waaaaay better - than this tripe.

My daughter watches Pokemon, and as a protective single mother I don't see anything wrong with it. She knows all the characters and all the monsters, all their evolutions, battle moves, types, strengths and weakness. It reminds me of a mix between Baseball trading cards, where you knew all their stats, and Speed Racer (and it's gentler version Belle and Sebastian, if anyone remembers that show) which I grew up watching. (Best episode, the two part episode with the truck made of gold that melts at the end.) It also gives all kids of all languages and backgrounds something in common to talk about.

Now that aside best animae *Heavy Metal*. Just try to disagree.

Well let's see. "Heavy Metal" is NOT anime and it doesn't even compare to some of the great animes of all time like Akira, Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D and my personal fav...Record of Lodas War
