Subject: 1997- The that DVD first was introduced to this World!

I currently do not have a DVD player, but part of me is thinking about purchasing one years from now, how much longer will
VHS tapes and VCR's continue to be sold?

Videos will continue to be sold for a while yet, MasterSplinter, but I think it will be a matter of time when you will only find them in car boot sales. I'd give it about a couple of years for them to completely phase out.
You can get a DVD player pretty cheap now and DVDs are always being reduced. It is as cheap to get DVDs IMO as it is to get a video recorder and videos.

Believe it or not, it's almost cheaper to buy a DVD/VCR combo than just a DVD player. :P

I think that there are some movies that are no longer available on VHS any more.
I saw a DVD player at Wal-Mart for like $32.00 the other day. Hard to beat that price, Splinter.

A while back I heard that VHS, would stop production in a year, but I don't believe this. But you should definetly get one. They have new DivX certified DVD players, unfortunatly these are probably quite expensive.

It's been over a year since the last post but already there are signs of the VHS format being phased out. One of the two movie rental stores in town just had a major clearance of it's VHS tapes, about half of their stock which has been replaced with more DVD's. And at the Movie Gallery all the new releases are DVD I believe.

I got my first DVD player in 1999. It was about $300. The last DVD player I got for myself was for Christmas last year and it was about $40. The most cheap VCR I could find at Best Buy was about $80 for some reason.
If VCR's and VHS's will stop being made, I'm going to keep all of my VCR's and buy a huge supply of blank tapes. I still have a lot of old VHS tapes that I can't get on DVD. So I need at least one VCR. I do however have this little thing on my computer that can convert VHS to DVD. I've converted a few tapes, but I still want to keep a VCR and tapes.

We got our five years ago. However next year, it will be DVDs that will be phased out with HD DVDs and Blue Ray DVDs coming out soon.
