Subject: Trivia question on my calendar this morning

Written By: ChuckyG on 07/21/04 at 8:36 am

This singer/songwriter’s first hit, “About a Boy”, was seen as a reference to Kurt Cobain and deemed exploitative by Courtney Love.

A) Beth Orten
B) Louise Post
C) Barbara Manning
D) Mary Lou Lord

It gave the answer as D.  I looked up Mary Lou Lord, since I didn't recognize the name.  She never made the Hot 100, so I though "hit" was a little bit more credit than she was owed.  I looked her bio up on allmusic, and checked the songs she recorded.  She never recorded a song called "About a Boy" with the exception of a demo in 1993 (which I doubt predicted Kurt's suicide).  Turns out, it was Patti Smith (who I adore), and isn't even listed as an option!

Did Mary Lou Lord maybe write the song for Patti Smith?  Just a thought... ???

Good theory but unlikely.  Patti Smith is very well known for her lyrics and poetry.  She did cover Gloria (sort of) but for the most part, she does her own stuff.

See the 4th paragraph...
"Was it because media monster Courtney Love overacted to popular interpretations of one of Lord's few original tunes and publicly challenged Lord about whether she had or hadn't had a fling with Kurt Cobain? "

another reference to Love but no mention of the song name...

I've found a bunch of references to THE song that got under Courtney's skin but no title!!
