Subject: What was the first car you drove in the '90s

Written By: ComaWhite1978 on 09/18/04 at 4:25 am

Mine was a 1975 Chevy Nova with a 350 automatic. Four-door, unfortunately. My sister bought it in 1990, and I paid her $300 for it in 1995 when she bought a new car.  Dark green, with a lime green door; affectionately called the "tank" or "beast". Color contast was similar to Cheech's "Love Machine" in Up in Smoke. Fast as hell, but looked like s**t.  That car got me to work everyday, even days that were 20 below with a foot of snow on the road. There are SO many memories in that car, I don't have the heart to get rid of it.  I estimate that it's got AT LEAST 250,000 (350,000?!?) miles on it.

In 1992 I started driving, I got our 84 Cavalier wagon.  Loved it too.  Then in 1996 I bought a 90 Pontiac 6000 wagon.  Still have it, its up to 246k on the odometer now.  In 1998 I bought an 86 Celebrity wagon for $50, still have that one too.

I bought a brown 1990 Chevy Geo Prizm right off the showroom floor in 1989.  I drove it faithfully until 1995 when I traded it in on a horrible teal green 1995 Ford Escort.  Worst mistake of my life.

ComaWhite1978,

My first car in '85 was a 75 Chevy Nova (six cylinder) too. It was white. Got it at a car auction for $350 bucks. Had about 120,000 on it. I put my foot through the passenger side floorboard and used plywood to cover it up. I loved that car! Many great memories. Ended up on a car lot, a guy test drove it and stole it and it caught on fire! In '87 I had an '85 Chevy Cavalier that I drove until I couldn't drive it anymore (1998).

That would've been my second car, a 1988 blue Hyundai Excel.  It was also the first new car I'd had and I had it for 7 years til the thing just fell apart.

Well technically my first car was in drivers ed so I'm not sure. But the first one I started driving myself was a 1983 AMC Concord.

I know I'll be the Duke of the Uncool when I say this, but...my first car in the 90s was a '86 Dodge Caravan. Apparently, I haven't learned anything, as I'm driving an '01 version of the same vehicle.  8)

A 1977 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, when I was in Germany. 140+ mph for only $400? Talk about bang for the buck!  ;)

I started driving when I was 18, finally getting my license in mid-2004. My first car was my mum's old Volvo 940 GL: it rattled away for nearly thirteen years before that. Now I have my own Subaru Liberty RX 2.5 (I believe they call it the 'Legacy' outside Australia) a decent car, though a bit slow. My dream car (affordable dream car) is a Subaru Liberty GT (ultimate Q-ship) or a Nissan 350Z. I'm no rev-head, but I like to take my car for a spin now and again. Well, I would if the speed limit wasn't so miserly.

A Pontiac Sunfire.  I actually just learned to drive 2 years ago, and I still don't have my full license.  I only got my driver's license for the purposes of identification only.  If I have to go somewhere, I will walk :)

I think I was still driving my 1981 Datsun 280Z until about 1991.  That was my first car.  Then I got an '82 Chevy S-10 Pickup which I drove for over 10 years and it had over 240K miles by the time I got rid of it. :)  Thus, I am now a Chevy person.

Getting cheap speed is no problem. It's getting a car that you can go really fast in AND still survive that's hard.  ;)
