I saw Rushmore on Comedy Central a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty funny.

Even though I haven't gotten around to watching it yet, I also purchased a copy of the first Wes Anderson-Owen Wilson collaboration, Bottle Rocket, off of EBay, which looks really good too.

There are too many to list, but these remind me particularly of what it was like around 1995-7...

Clueless
    "She's a full on Monet."

Wayne's World I
    "Exsqueeze me? Baking power?"

Waynes World II
"We had to beat him to death with his own shoes..."

The Craft
    "Watch out for the wierdos"
    "We are the wierdos, mister."

Titanic
"I'm the king of the woooooooooorld!"

Hmmm. That's about all I can think of right now.

I think a few people are missing the point of something being called 'cult'.  It ussually doesn't have a large following to begin with, but has rabid fans that refuse to let the movie die.

I would hardly call Titanic a 'cult' hit.

My vote is for Army of Darkness.

agreed. a lot of the movies listed aren't even close to cult. cult movies are almost always low budget, independant films or have a script so bad that it's cheesy like showgirls.

my list..

As you can see by my new avatar, I am also a Big Lebowski fan.

Another one I like is "Get Shorty." The sequel, "Be Cool," just came out, and I am looking forward to seeing it.

The reason why no none has mentioned "Withnail and I" is that it was released in 1987 and not during the 1990's.

I'd toss in Dark City. It's commonly listed as one of the top sci-fi movies ever among people who've actually seen it, but it only pulled in $14M domestic, so it was hardly a blockbuster. While I'm at it, I might as well toss Strange Days into the mix as well.

I think Tarantino's and the Coen Brother's movies can be considered cult movies because they stand the test of time and actually get more popular as time goes on.

Firstly a cult film doesnt necessarily have to be low budget or unpopular to start with. I think you are confussing this with the 1970s midnight movie era whereby predominantly b-movies were only showed at drive-ins. This sparked the cult era through fans feeling priviledged from being able to see films which were not accessible to a mainstream audience. This lack of accessibility is argualbly where the 'snobbish' behaviour over the knowledge and fandon of cult films has arised form, through the notion of 'knowing the film' better than other fans. This idea died out, however, with the invention of the VCR and DVD meaning that key cult texts are now widely accessible. There is a vast misconception that all cult movies are low-budget, disjointed and 'rickety'. This is not the case. There are some clear runners for cult films in the 1990s which have been released into the mainstream and have huge cult followings such as:

Delicatessan
The Nightmare before Christmas
Pulp Fiction
Natural Born Killers
Jackie Brown
Being John Malkovich.

i am trying to find the title of this movie i saw a few years ago. it was about a group of friends who were all involved in this same odd story, the movie shows each persons experience, then goes back to beginning, rewinds a bit and tells the next persons experience. I remember it being very popular but not wildly successful...( its not the  rules of attraction, but it was kind of similar to it) i would appreciate if anyone has any ideas!

I'm thinking that by "cult" films that maybe you mean some of the lesser known films that flew under the radar? If so, then my favorites are:
-Nothing But Trouble (with Demi Moore and Chevy Chase)
-Defending Your Life (with Albert Brooks)

Heck, these are some of my favorite films overall.
