Subject: Cheesiest 90s year

Written By: Full_House_Fan on 02/06/05 at 5:58 pm

I pick 1990, followed closely by 1997.

1990 still had the bad hair and ugly glasses.  Also Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer, perhaps the biggest artists of the year, rival the worst of the 80s in cheesiness.  Not to mention the New Kids were still big in 1990, perhaps the corniest band ever!  Not to mention the movies!  "Home Alone" is great but so unrealistic!  And "Edward Scissorhands", Robert Smith of the Cure is that you?  Give up Michael Anthony Hall!  Your time is up!
Simply put, 1990 had the worst of the 80s AND the 90s.

1997 is wore than 1990 imo but not quite as campy.  I mean the whole JapCrap wave replaced stuff like Animaniacs, old school Nicktoons, disney, etc.  I'm not a fan of kid cartoons in general but Japanimation is the WORST!  And Gigapets, wtf.  Furbys were kinda cool though.  Also, 1997 is the year of the Spice Girls and the Taco Bell dog.  :P

Follow ups would be 1991, 1996, and 1999.  1992 or 1994 was probably the best year of the decade.

Maybe 1999, as said before, I was too busy being a college student and mom in the 90s!

I used to love the home alone movies. I remember when I got one of them talkboy things. Never got into Pokemon or "Japanimation". I was really in to old school nick shows. I remember my cousin had one those tomagotchis, so of course I had to get one. I just saw my 9 yr old niece and she had a new tomagotchi. I was surprised to see they still make them.

That pretty much sums it up.

I think '93 was the highwater mark of the decade. That's when the alternative music movement really hit its stride. That's also the year that one of my favorite albums of the decade, "Independent Worm Saloon" by the Butthole Surfers, was released. (FHF, if you're into 90's alternative/punk, I give this CD my highest recommendation. If you dont have it already, go out and buy it, stick it in your CD player, crank it up to 11, and I'm 95% positive you'll thank me later.) ;)

1991 was pretty cheesy and horrible.

It has it's many good points too, but waaaay too many cheesy moments.  Everytime you think of Pearl Jam, there's something like Vanilla Ice.  Bring up Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and there's M.C. Hammer.  Think of Nirvana, and then there's Arsenio Hall who was trying to be cool with his flatop hair in 1991.  NKOTB were still vaguely around and enough of a terrible memory in 1991 too.  As funny as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was, it represented many of the horrible things about 1991 that I am talking about.  1990 has an excuse, but I felt like '91 really didn't.

I turned 16 that year, and it's embarrassing for me to say I grew up back then.  I remember at the time kinda even thinking that a lot of that stuff would date very quickly, just because it was so over the top.

I say around 1998 and 1999. In Britain, the boy/girl band thing got really camp - Steps, Scooch, B*Witched, S Club 7 etc . . .

It all kind of climaxed with The Fast Food Rockers.  ::)

1998, because I find it cheesy and repulsive that some idiots would steal my car in Denver in a high security apartment and discard most of my belongings. >:(

1992 was cheesy cause of Kris Kross, sir mix-a-lot, wreckx-n-effect, and California Dreams. Actually every year in the 90s was pretty cheesy ;D . Not that it matters, cause the 90s were still great.

I liked 1997 when I was 17, and when I was 10 in 90, I enjoyed Super Mario Bros. 3, Ninja Turtles and Bart Simpson.  I voted for 1990, yes it definitely was the cheesiest, but cheese isn't always bad.

PS:  I LOVE anime.  Just not stuff like Digimon and Beyblade; I admit, I think Pokemon's a little more enjoyable.

Oh Man, I remember the "Talkboy", didn't that come out in 1995? I also remember the "Yak Back" that came out in 1995

Anyway, I was Born in 1986, so I honestly can't remember much of 1990, 1991, or 1992.  I remember most stuff from 1993 and beyond

And it's tough to say which year was the cheesiest because I loved every year of the 90's and each year of the 90's brought something new to me. Anyway, I guess I would probably go with 1999 (Too Much Pop Music, plus the Introduction of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Eminem)

^ I couldn't agree more.

I was just thinking about this - despite the fact that many things in current pop culture and fashions, etc are derived from 1999, the actual music of 1999 sounds a bit dated now.

2005 is to 1999 what the late 80s (1988-91) were to the "bulk" 80's (eg: 1982-87) -- a watered-down, less cheesy version of it.

1999 no doubt was the cheesiest year. At least 1997 you had bands like Everclear, Foo Fighters. Even Depeche Mode had a couple hits that year. Savage Garden came out in 1997 and they were good. 1998 was alright. R&B was alright like Brian McKinight, Montell Jordan, Next, and Monica. 1999 is where everything went wrong. It just seemed like the music was going for 12 year olds. One of the posters on this board said 1990 brought the cheesiness of both the 80's and 90's. I think 2000 brought the worst of both the 00's and 90's. I don;t think 1990 was that bad. Nine Inch Nails was hot that year. Depeche Mode was hot that year. R&b acts like Bell Biv Devoe and En Vogue were out. Rappers like LL Cool J and A Tribe Called Quest were making hits that year too.

Whats wrong with 96? I liked 96. Anyway "Home Alone" was funny. I remember I watched the movie for the first time at some girls house who used to live diwin the street from me in 1990 or 1991. "Edward Scissorhands" struck me as just weird but not cheesey. Nice analogy with the Robert Smith thing though.
