Now it's sad songs from the '90s. What about the happy ones ?  ;D

Here's all I've got for now...

Adia -- Sarah McLachlan
Stay -- Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
Cry for Help -- Rick Astley
Sunny Came Home -- Shawn Colvin
My Favorite Mistake -- Sheryl Crow
Hopeless (Like A Penny With A Hole In It) -- Dionne Farris
Missing -- Everything But the Girl
No More "I Love You's" -- Annie Lennox
Don't Cry -- Seal
Mr. Wendel -- Arrested Development

And one that was already mentioned...
Everybody Hurts -- R.E.M.

Sad songs don't make me sad, they just help me get through.

"Happiness is a sad song" - Charlie Brown

How's that a sad song? I always thought it was a very happy, optimistic song, celebrating the end of the Cold War. Or do you mean it's a sad song in hindsight, considering what's happened in the world in the fifteen years since it was released?

I agree with the person who said Nirvana's version of 'The Man Who Sold the World' off their Unplugged album - there's just some really dejected overtone to that song, and it's almost like you can feel Kurt Cobain's sadness when he sings it. Pearl Jam's 'Black' is also a downer if you listen to the lyrics. I always thought Alice in Chains made some of the most depressing music of the decade - their most depressing, in my opinion, being 'Rain When I Die' and 'Dirt'  :-\\. Also, Megadeth's 'A Tout Le Monde' is pretty gloomy.

This topic just got me in a gloomy mood  >:(

My vote is for "Mambo Number 5."  Sad, hell... that song is friggin' PATHETIC!

Thank you, thank you... I'm here all week!  Tip your waitress!

But seriously, folks...

Might have to go with "Brick," by Ben Folds Five.  I heard a radio DJ say once it was about a young (presumably teenage) couple who have to visit an abortion clinic to...erase a mistake... around Christmas time.

But I'd also agree with the posters from before who also suggest "Tears In Heaven," by Eric Clapton.  I can't even imagine what Clapton went through, losing his little boy like that.

They were both sung by men. One was about how (danny?) wasnt comming home from the military? I know there's not that much info there..  But the second song is about how him and his wife got in a car accident and her last words to him. I wish i knew at least some of the words, but i just cant right now.

Well, "Danny" not coming home from the military doesn't exactly ring any bells (although it kind of made me think of "I Don't Want To Wait" by Paula Cole, or maybe "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin, but those were obviously sung by women,) but I'm thinking the song about the car crash could possibly be "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam from 1998.

Its Possible this is a PJ Harvey song, maybe Portishead's Glory Box or Carnival by Natalie Merchant.

as for sad songs ofthe 90's perhaps better man by Pearl Jam (dont know if this has been listed) or Falling by Julee Cruise, better known as the theme song for the TV serial Twin Peaks.

Also, My love ( i think its called that) by Westlife is quite a sad song too.

The saddest song of the 90's has to be a little known song by Emerson Lake & Palmer. This song
is probably known by me and 2 other people, it is from their 1994 album In The Hot Seat. I can't
find a recording for it anywhere on line so I'll post the lyrics and you'll see how sad it is, especially if you're
a parent of young children.

Daddy

It was a cold night in December
The snow lay on the ground
She was coming home from school one night
From the other side of town
It was getting late, there was something wrong
Then I heard the news
A TV Flash and by 9 o'clock
They'd found her socks and shoes

Daddy come and bring me home

I didn't know which way to turn
I was shaking like a leaf
I got into my car and drove
Searching every street
Has anybody seen her
Have you found my little girl
She's all I have, all I possess
And to me, she means the world

I can hear her calling
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, when are you gonna bring me home

As time went by each silent night
We knew all hope was gone
We knew the light had flickered
From the eyes that once had shone
They caught a man in a bar one night
He confessed to what he'd done
He'd laid her body out in some dark wood
Just didn't know which one,
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home

I just couldn't leave her out there
Lying on her own
'Cause she belongs to me
And I belong to her
I know she rests in Heaven
With the angels on a throne
But now I hear her calling
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home

How's that a sad song? I always thought it was a very happy, optimistic song, celebrating the end of the Cold War. Or do you mean it's a sad song in hindsight, considering what's happened in the world in the fifteen years since it was released?

If that's the case, tell amiright.com that you found an "Upbeat yet Depressing" song.

Guys, the saddest songs i've ever heard... Break your heart (Natalie Merchant), Shadowboxer, Never is a promise and Across the universe (Fiona Apple), Never tear us apart (INXS), Babylon and These years love (David Gray) and most of the songs you've mentioned already. Now i need your help: i can't remember neither the name of the song nor the name of the artist, but i'm sure that was a really sad song, not very known, by the way. The melody of the chorus was sad, similar to the melody of Falls apart (Sugar Ray) and Love is expensive and free (Fastball), but sadder; and the voice of the singer was like Chris Cornell's voice. That's all i can remember. And the whole song made you evoke a foggy lonely street in the midnight. I can't even remember the lyrics. Please help me.

I'll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me-Expose
New York Minute-Don Henley(I was listening to this song last night and I thought of September 11th, 2001.) I remember my Dad telling me days after Sept 11th, 2001 happened they played Henley's New York Minute alot on the radio.
Where Do I Go From You-Jon Secada
I Believe-Blessid Union of Souls
Coming Out of The Dark-Gloria Estefan(sorty of a happy and sad song at the same time.)

Yeah, I agree with all of these. "New York Minute" is actually one of Henley's few sad songs (even his other ballads like "End of the Innocence" are more poppy) and it seems even more tragic with 9/11. "I Believe" was one of my favorite songs of 1995, it sounds like it's about a girl who falls in love with a black guy and her family doesn't accept it.

I'd also say:

I Don't Have the Heart - James Ingram
If You Go - Jon Secada
Nobody Knows - Tony Rich Project (catchy but sad if you listen to the lyrics)
Another Day in Paradise/Everyday/Do You Remember - Phil Collins
By the Time This Night is over - Peabo Bryson
I'll Get By - Eddie Money

Pearl Jam - Jeremy

I used to sing along to this song when it first came out but got really depressed during High School when someone told me what the song was really about.  Boy, during those times I was afraid the quiet people would snap after finding out this song

Tupac - Changes

This song made me cry when it came out, and it was the same year that Tupac died I believe.  I am not so much sad now because we are now ready for a Black President, which Tupac was skeptical about in that song.

Though I am not a fan of them, that one song made the Goo Goo Dolls caught on to me a bit.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me find a song i'm looking for. I can't remember any of the lyrics, and i'm not even sure it's from the 90's.. all I know is that it has an organ track in the background and was a fairly sad sounding song, sung by a man, and was a popular song, not too out there, so hopefully somebody can remember it. I can remember that the beginning of the chorus started kind of pained and yelling, like he was missing someone.. or something.. lol.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Daniel

The saddest song of the 90's has to be a little known song by Emerson Lake & Palmer. This song
is probably known by me and 2 other people, it is from their 1994 album In The Hot Seat. I can't
find a recording for it anywhere on line so I'll post the lyrics and you'll see how sad it is, especially if you're
a parent of young children.

Daddy

It was a cold night in December
The snow lay on the ground
She was coming home from school one night
From the other side of town
It was getting late, there was something wrong
Then I heard the news
A TV Flash and by 9 o'clock
They'd found her socks and shoes

Daddy come and bring me home

I didn't know which way to turn
I was shaking like a leaf
I got into my car and drove
Searching every street
Has anybody seen her
Have you found my little girl
She's all I have, all I possess
And to me, she means the world

I can hear her calling
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, when are you gonna bring me home

As time went by each silent night
We knew all hope was gone
We knew the light had flickered
From the eyes that once had shone
They caught a man in a bar one night
He confessed to what he'd done
He'd laid her body out in some dark wood
Just didn't know which one,
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home

I just couldn't leave her out there
Lying on her own
'Cause she belongs to me
And I belong to her
I know she rests in Heaven
With the angels on a throne
But now I hear her calling
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home

The first time I saw this video, it ripped open old wounds.  The resemblance to the fights between my father and me is uncanny.  He did used to say "You're no son of mine," and "You walked out of here, you left us behind."  It did feel like the whole room was filled with a blizzard and wild animals.  He did used to break things.  And I would come back to try to patch things up between him and me, and just get more of the same crap!

I agree with Runaway Train, The Unforgiven (especially for a metal band, this was a really unique song), and U2's One.

These too:

Lots of songs talk about relationships ending, but (even if its catchy) this one still seems sad and upsetting. Almost like she's happy for her ex, but still faintly hopes to have him back:

Another day in paradise - Phil Collins, this song is so sad it still brings tears to my eyes.

Run to you - Whitney Houston

I know that when you look at me
there's so much that you just don't see
But if you would only take the time
I know in my heart you'd find
A girl who's scared sometimes
who isn't always strong
Can't you see the hurt in me
I feel so all alone :\'(

I want to run to you
I want to run to you
Won't you hold me in your arms
And keep me safe from harm
I want to run to you
But if I come to you
Tell me will you stay or will you run away

Each day, each day I play the role
of someone always in control
But at night I come home and turn the key
There is nobody there, no one cares for me :\'(
What's the sense of trying hard to find your dreams
without someone to share it with
Tell me what does it mean

I want to run to you
I want to run to you
Won't you hold me in your arms
and keep me safe from harm
I want to run to you
But if I come to you
Tell me will you stay or will you run away
