Subject: What's Better - 90s or 2000s Rap?

Written By: Full_House_Fan on 02/22/05 at 1:06 am

I'd say 90s.  It wasn't yet a teenybopper sensation.  :P

I'd say '90s because it has more of an original feel to it. Today's rap is mostly the same garbage being used over and over again.

I totally agree. Todays (c)rap doesn't even compare with the likes of 2pac, Notorious BIG, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre... etc. Snoop's first CD was amazing.

Today's rap is poppy bullshhh with very little meaning. It's all about money and the joys of clubbing.

I'd pick the '90s because one thing, rap music sounded more like "rap", and another, today's rap has a little too much plagarized junk in it.

I think so too. However, lots of rap music during the second half of the 90s had some junk in it, too. My vote is for 90s rap, even though I don't much care for rap in general.

I prefer 90's rap. Some of it had a social conscience then, but nowadays, it's just an excuse for people with big mouths to shout about how rich, heavily armed, or sexually attractive they perceive themselves to be- strikes me that they're over-compensating for something, just like they say about people with big, flash cars... ;D

90s, all the way

The 80s were mostly a little too hardcore,
The 90s were toned down but they made up for it with coolness,
The 2000s are just crap.

Rap in the eighties wasn't hard core until 1988-89 with Gangsta rap. Otherwise, it was still about partying!

I guess so, but I heard "The Message"(which was great) from 1982, so that's what I was thinking of mostly.

I was "0-9" the whole decade so I didn't get to hear all of it.

80's GANGSA rap was nutty! The 90's was best though since it was mixed with meaning (unlike today's) and was more accessible (man, I never thought I'd use that word) to people who weren't into the hardcore scene.

I agree on the gangsta rap deal, although Gangsta Rap didn't really go beyond NWA until 1992/93 to my knowledge in popularity, although Ice T was doing it in 1987.  But I don't think it was all about partying in the 80s. "The Message" has just that, a message. It's like that now, today's mainstream boy bands rappers always talk about smacking hos, driving lowriders, and clubbing at night.  In the nineties it was Gangsta Rap and East Coast Conscious Hip-Hop in the early part, and Mainstream Map and Eminem toward the end.  The mid 90s were pretty much just Tupac, Biggie and their respective "posses".

Off topic, but does anyone here think "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes has a hip-hopish sort of beat in some parts?

Definitely 90's. 80's was like the teenage years. It was goofy and awkward before being honed.
If you compare The Marshall Mathers LP with Encore, the difference in lyric quality is phenomenal. I believe this is because most rappers who spat out their best lyrics in the 90's ran out of rhymes, especially when limiting their content to guns, hos and clubbing.

When they came out in the late 80s, they were quite popular (NWA) in my neck of the woods. The Gangsta rap you are referring to was the umbrella term to describe any angry rap used by the media. When "The Message" came out, it gave another avenue for rap to go. Before then, it was about partying!

As for Yes, no!
