Subject: Violence on TV - more in 90s or 2000s?

Written By: Full_House_Fan on 02/24/05 at 10:25 pm

For now I'll say 2000s.  The 90s may of had more on primetime but secondly channels today show some truly sick stuff.  :P  >:( But since Breastgate it's been getting better.  :)

I'd say the '90s because in the '00s we are actually cleaning up some crap.  :) :) BTW, the '90s had more sex and violence than it is now!

I think we need more violence, it's entertaining and others are getting hurt for your pleasure...

It's also another reason you don't see much good news on the evening news, who wants to see people more happy then yourself? You want to see some misery so you can feel better and the networks know this, they could easily fill each nights news with something happy but who would watch?

The 90s. I think 911 "helped" curtail the TV violence somewhat.

My take is that the '90's was a more violent decade then the 00's in so far as television violence is concerned. Of course, that "so far" is because we have not yet reached the end of the '00's.Of course, I also don't watch that much television neither. Only regularly watching "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" on ABC and "Young Blades" on Pax. And, of course, I must add, that I have found most of the previous decades to be more violent, television speaking, then the '90's.

Aren't you like 13 or 14 man?  If so, you, like me, probably only remember the latter part of the 90s with great detail.  The late 90s may be worse than now, but I've seen a lot of TV from the early and mid 90s and its tame compared to now.

I agree. "Criminal Minds" is a hit series today, and has been since 2005. Its unusually realistic depiction of murder, torture and violence in general would have garnered sheer outcry back in the early '90s.
Now, I will note that 90s television was much sexier (and sleazier) than succeeding decades. "Baywatch" for one, although that left a lot to the imagination. Don't forget about all those Lifetime Movies that aired in the late '80s and '90s, about extramarital affairs and some of those "made-for-television" movies left nothing to the imagination. Back in those days, sexual content was amped up whereas violence in television was watered down. Today, it's the opposite. And yes, I'm strictly referring to primetime network television rather than cable (HBO, SHO, etc).

2000s definitely, with the rise of premium cable. More TV shows -> more violent TV shows. Duh. :P Premium cable also provided more creative freedom.

If you're talking about your average TV show, well that's another question. I don't know how to quantify that.
