Hmmm... I guess I'd say 80s.  But really only 1989, sorta like Britney is really a 90s artist but I can't seriously refer to her as one the way I can with Nirvana, Celine Dion, or Garth Brooks.

Paula Abdul's year may of been 1989, but she was really popular even up to 1992.  Even her later stuff was very close to the eighties.  But when discussing 80s music, I typically won't bring Paula Abdul up with Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, or Depeche Mode.  Know what I mean?

She's definitely '80s the music sounds '80s and the videos have a '80s look to them.

According to the sleeve of her "Forever Your Girl" album, that was released in 1988. I'd say I agree with her being more 90's, but then again she did release her single "Straight Up" in the January of 1989, then her second single "Forever Your Girl" was released in the middle of that year and then came her third single "Knocked Out" which failed to chart only reaching number 45 before giving the remix treatment a year later and reached number 21 in the summer of 1990.

She was great, her singles "Rush Rush", "Blowing Kisses In The Wind" and "Will You Marry Me" were brilliant ballads.

I must bring up that Paula Abdul had legacy as a music video choreographer (whatever that is  ;D ) is the earlier 80s.

She was a Laker Girl! She's a great choreograher and she still looks beautiful! BTW, I say 90's because she had much more success :)

As a kid of the 80s-early 90s, I thought she was great.

I say 80s, but I loved the 90s stuff too.

I saw her more as a 90's artist.  She did have hits in the 80's, but she didn't come in until late 1988

It's cool to see this on the first page again. Another I thought I'd responded to, but I guess not, LOL.

Overall, I'd say musically she was more 80's, but imagewise more 90's.

For instance, the "Opposites Attract" video and song was technically a duet with MC Skat Cat - which totally fits with the more party/light rap of the time. That wouldn't have fit back in 1984, but was perfect for 1990.

FullHouseFan's quote says it well too:

Her style was clearly very 80s.

1988/1989 was her key time.  She did have that Rush album in 1991, but honestly it never registered with the public the way "Forever Your Girl" did.  Paula Abdul became dated very fast though, along with her boyfriend Arsenio Hall.

Arsenio's talk show was very late 80s, but he continued on into 1994....he did modify the show to be more 90s around 1992 or so, but I kinda always think of him as late 80s/very early 90s too.

It's interesting, back then a 28 year old like her could be a superstar, these days that's kinda too old.  It's literally the 16-23 year olds that are the main acts today.

^ Yeah, I sometimes actually was surprised Eminem got as big as he did from, say 2000-2003 around age 30. Gwen Stefani is also 35 or so now.

You're right though, they're more the exceptions. The cutoff does seem to be mid 20's for beginning stardom now.

In the early 80's, Huey Lewis came out of nowhere at age 32 or so with "Do You Believe in Love" - that's quite a change from now.

As for Paula, I think she was born in 1962, so yeah, I guess she was 28 in 1990. I forgot about that till you mentioned it - I always thought of her as way younger. (Of course, it also doesn't hurt that she hasn't aged a day since then. If it weren't for that info, I'd not have ever believed she's a 43 year old now! ;) )

^It blew me away when I first found out how old Gwen Stefani was, she's 35 and so popular.  She's a grandma compared most to other pop artists. The thing is that most people would probably figure her to be much, much younger.  She certainly doesn't look or "act 35", she acts like she is in her early 20s.  The 16-23 youth obession seemed to begin in 1999, when Britney and the boy bands arrived on the scene.  Madonna was already 26 when she hit it big back in 1984, that's somewhat too old to be starting out today.

Agreed.

I guess she had the advantage of already being popular with No Doubt before 1999 (I think "Don't Speak" and "Spiderwebs" were huge in 1996/97).

Her style and fashion sense is also very teenage/20's.

Theoretically, I guess you could say Paula didn't act "late 20's" in 1990 either. But it was also less out of the ordinary then to burst onto the scene at that age.
