Subject: 1995/1996 Songs

Written By: CSM1986 on 07/09/05 at 12:03 am

Ok Guys, so what Songs from 1995/1996 do you remember so much because they were constantly played on the Radio or on MTV?

Early/Summer 1995
"Waterfalls" - TLC (This was a pretty popular song back then and it always came on the Radio)
"This Is How We Do It" - Montell Jordan (Another popular song that just would not stop playing on the Radio, I got sick of it after a while)
"Lightning Crashes" - Live (I remember this song mostly from the Music Video on MTV being played all the time)
"Run Away" - Real McCoy (I don't know why, but this song was always played on the Radio. It sounds more like a song you would hear at a Rave Party though)
"Kiss From A Rose" - Seal (One of those Songs that was played far too much and is still stuck in my head to this day)
"Only Wanna Be With You" - Hootie and the Blowfish (This was easily the Most Overplayed Song on the Radio in 1995, I still Hate that Song to this day)
"All Over You" - Live (This is one of my favorite Rock songs, always heard this on the Rock stations)

Late 1995
"Back For Good" - Take That (Here is a song I never hear anyone talk about, yet it was played ALOT on the Radio)
"As I Lay Me Down" - Sophie B. Hawkins (Always heard this on the Radio, it always reminded me of this Girl I liked, for some strange reason)
"Gangsta's Paradise" - Coolio (Probably one of the more popular Rap Songs Ever and the Most Played Rap Song in 1995)
"I Wish" - Skee-Lo (As a Rap Fan, I really liked this song and I still do. It was so 95'ish)
"Sweet Dreams" - Marylin Manson (My friend used to go nuts whenever this song came on, it's a pretty cool song)

Early 1996
"Ironic" - Alanis Morrisette (This was easily the Most Popular Song from 1996 and was played just as much as the Macarena)
"Nobody Knows" - Tony Rich Project (This is the song I remember the most from the Mid-90's, The Music Video for this came on MTV about every 30 Minutes. It's a pretty depressing song)
"Always Be My Baby" - Mariah Carey (Another one that came on MTV All the time, I remember the Music Video by Heart almost)
"Missing" - Everything but the Girl (This got alot of Radio Play, all I remember were the words "Like the Deserts miss the Rain" and forgot basicaly the rest of the song)
"The World That I Know" - Collective Soul (The Music Video was played alot on MTV and boy did it depress the heck out of me!)
"Glycerine" - Bush (My Brother liked this song alot and it was always on MTV, the ending of the song really creeps me out)
"Closer to Free" - The Bodeans (Thanks alot Party of 5  ::) )
"Doin' It" - LL Cool J (I remember being at my Preacher's House one time and we were watching TV and the Music Video for this came on, Yeah...It was rather Embarrassing for me)

Summer 1996
"Tonight, Tonight" - Smashing Pumpkins (I remember always seeing the Music Video on MTV and was the Most Unusual MV I'd ever seen, Great Song though)
"The Crossroads" - Bone Thugs N Harmony (Loved this song, I remember me and my friend used to watch some station called "The Box" waiting for this song to come on and it did nearly every 20 Minutes)
"Macarena" - Los Del Rio (Oh Man, Don't get me started...)

Late 1996
"Change The World" - Eric Clapton (I got so sick of hearing this song all the time, it always depressed me for some reason)
"Twisted" - Keith Sweat (Well they never actually played the Original Version of this song on the Radio, only the "Sexual Healing Remix" and I loved it)
"Where Do You Go" - No Mercy (I got annoyed by this song quick, always on the Radio)
"No Diggity" - Blackstreet (Another Overplayed Song, but I still like it)
"Unbreak My Heart" - Toni Braxton (Overplayed and too Sappy)
"Nobody" - Keith Sweat (Another Favorite of mine)
"I Believe I Can Fly" - R.Kelly (My Radio almost Broke from this song being replayed over and over again)
"Lovefool" - The Cardigans (This was a Huge Hit and was constantly played on our Top Hits Radio Station)

I remember most of the songs you mentioned...I was in 9th/10th/11th grade during that time. Also, I listened to Casey Kasem's weekly countdown show every Sunday night during that time (except for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, 1995).

A few others I remember..

Summer 1995:
"I'll Be There For You" (Theme From Friends) by the Rembrandts. Was one of my favorites at the time.
"Fantasy" by Mariah Carey. At the time I liked it, even though it ripped off the Tom Tom Club's biggest hit, "Genius Of Love."
"You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morissette. First time I heard a song with a swear word in it. The radio, of course, edits it out, so it sounds like "Are you thinkin' of me when you ffff..curr?"

Late 1995:
"Diggin' On You" by TLC.
"Runaround" by Blues Traveler.
"Roll To Me" by Del Amitri. One of the shortest pop songs ever recorded, at exactly 2 minutes.
"Runaway" by Janet Jackson. I thought it had kind of a catchy beat to it.
"Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette.
"Carnival" by Natalie Merchant.

Early 1996:
"Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. As I remember, it stayed on the charts for over half a year. Got lots of radio airplay.
"Because You Loved Me" by Celine Dion. As an avid Casey Kasem listener at the time, I remember it monopolized the #1 spot for three months or so on the Adult Contemporary charts.
"1979" by Smashing Pumpkins. Heard it a lot on rock stations.

I'll finish my list later.

More songs I remember from early 1996:

"Wonderwall" by Oasis.
"Insensitive" by Jann Arden. That song was on the charts into the fall of '96 in the U.S.
"Just A Girl" by No Doubt. The group's first hit single.

I'll list more later.

I cant believe you guys forgot 'Connection' by Elastica, one of my favorite bands. The video to this song was played constantly on MTV, like they really wanted people to get into it, but it didn't really catch on I guess.

Continuing with my list (I hope some of these haven't been mentioned yet)...

Early to mid-1996:
"Follow You Down"--Gin Blossoms. I kinda liked that one for a while.
"Give Me One Reason"--Tracy Chapman. Began climbing the U.S. charts in April 1996 and was a #1 hit on Casey Kasem's "American Top 20" countdown for 7 weeks or so. I still like that one. 8)
"Hook" by Blues Traveler. Actually from late 1995, but carried over into a good part of '96.
"Jealousy" by Natalie Merchant. It was around May 1996 when that song hit the U.S. charts.

Summer 1996:
"You Learn"--Alanis Morissette.
"Flood"--Jars of Clay.
"The Earth, The Sun, The Rain"--Color Me Badd.
"Change The World"--Eric Clapton.
"Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand"--Primitive Radio Gods. Another 90's one-hit wonder.

Hey I've been having a problem remembering the name and the singer of a certain song and I was hoping if someone could help me.  I think it came out around 1995.  It was a very fast-paced, catchy kind of rock song with song very fast/raplike singing.  I cna remember " I'm, I'm nothing but I'm not" with the beat for the rest of the words like da.....da,da,da.  Then, really fast ".... everyone is tryign to get, twenty years..."  I would really appreciate any help.  Thanks

Color Me Badd had a hit in 1996? I didn't know that. Color Me Bad was hot from about 1991-1994. Another song that was hot in 1995 was Gloria Estefan's remake of Carl Carlton's 1970's hit "Everlasting Love". I thought it was a good cover song. It was a 70's slow song and Gloria kinda turned into a more faster pace song. 1995 was a good year for music. "Follow Tou Down" by Gin Blossoms was 96 huh? I thought it was a little earlier like 94 or 93. "Warped" by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers was aso a hit in 1995. That was when Dave Navarro was their gutairist for a short while. There was this dance song by a group named "Sunscreen" I think. It went like something like "Let The Rain go down, You know you can never make me love you anymore." I thonk that song was recorded in the 94-5 musical year. I don't know the title of the song.

Yes, CMB had a hit in '96. They were pretty much inactive after that. And yes, Gin Blossoms "Follow You Down" came out as a single in February 1996, and was a big hit for about five or six months; it was a follow-up to their late 1995/early 1996 hit "Till I Hear It From You" (which was from the Empire Records soundtrack).

In 1995/1996, a few songs and artists that stuck out for me were:

Sophie B. Hawkins "As I Lay Me Down" (I think that was the title)
The Beatles Anthology
No Doubt
Everclear "Santa Monica"
Bone Thugs & Harmony
Mariah Carey Fantasy Album
Seal
Beck
TLC's 1995 album
The Fugee's
"Gangsta's Paradise"/"Amish Paradise"
and probably a few others I'm forgetting. I was sort of in la-la land those two years because I was listening to a lot of older music and changing my mind about newer stuff..

"I Luv U Baby" - The Original
"I Like It Like That" - Blackout All-Stars
"The Gift" - Way Out West

I remember Counting Blue Cars by Dishwalla. That was a nice little pop song back then. You know I was just thinking anybody remember that song "Sick of Myself" by Matthew Sweet from 1995? I posted on another board as well about that song "Good" by Better Than Ezra where the singer schreeches in a loud voice at the end of the song and says "MsRight". When he says "MsRight" thats so classic 90's for me.

I think "My Favorite Mistake" by Sheryl Crow came out in 1996 and I liked that song a lot.

No I think it was a hit two years after that. However, she did release a self-titled album in '96, which featured the singles "If It Makes You Happy" and "Everyday Is A Winding Road." "A Change Would Do You Good" was also from that album, but it didn't become a U.S. hit until '97.

Nally, thanks for the correction. I always get those two confused as both "If It Makes You Happy" and "My Favorite Mistake" seem to always sound like they came from the same album.. Don't know why.. but I seem to associate them with the 1996 album rather than the 1998 album.

No problem, UV52... I believe the 1998 album was titled "The Globe Sessions"; I remember, I was entering college at that time. :)

Same here pretty much.  I was dropping that Mighty Dub Kats track in late '95.  Same with Ace of Base.  Good years for dance music.  :)
