Subject: Most Depressing Song of the 90's

Written By: CSM1986 on 07/10/05 at 12:18 am

For me it has to be "The World I Know" by Collective Soul from 1995. The song overall is just Depressing to me and it has those hautning violins in it which makes it worse

Here is the link to the Music Video for it which is pretty Depressing for me

I like how they captured Mid-90's New York City in the Video, there was nothing I loved more than Mid-90's NYC

Falling by Julee Cruise.

It was the song done for the Twin Peaks series.

I personally loved the mood of that song, but it was  a very depressing and sad song.

I Like To Move It by Reel 2 Reel. The fact that anyone in their right mind (or not) would also recently choose to re-do that song makes me look forward to being bombed by terrorists. It's depressing & seriously disturbing.

Spacehog, perfect choice. If anyone wants a glimpse into the mind of a drug addict questioning life and not being able to deal with it, by the Mad Season album. It should have won 'Album of the Year. A truly haunting and disturbing record. I highly recommend it.

Todd, that is a depressing song. I remember the video. She was like on heroin or pills and she was hanging her head over the microphone. Funny as hell!

Easily "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam. Suicide must be the most depressing subject for a song ever, other than the sick necrophilia of Rob Zombie's "Living Dead Girl". :P

I have "Above" by Mad Season and it is excellent. Very very dark. I wouldn't consider "River of Deceit" the most depressing song of the 90s by any stretch though. A depressing song (for me) has to make me feel worse after hearing it than before.

"Runaway Train" and "Everybody Hurts" - man, those songs/videos depressed me! Yet, I liked them in some strange way.

the most depressing song I can think of right now is Nirvanas cover of The Man Who Sold The World on the Unplugged album.

Nothingman by Pearl Jam is also very depressing.

You call those lyrics depressing? LOL! Go read the lyrics to 'River of Deceit' by Mad Season or 'Estranged' by Guns N Roses.

I agree with you on this one ultraviolet52, but the most depressing song of the 1990's, by far, but I did like at the time would have to be:

"Water From The Moon" by Celine Dion

Just listen to it, and tell me if you doesn't get depressed?

Just one of the lyrics:

"Do I have to get water from the moon, is that what I have to do?  To make you love me, make you love me!"

"Crestfallen" by Anathema.

I cry a tear of hope but it is lost in helplessness
The darkness eats away at the very embers of my soul
For the deepest love I had has dissolved before my eyes
My sorrow is bleak, I beg for deliverance

Lord, in your mercy, hear my prayer

All emotion is consumed by an inner silence
All grief is unassuaged by disconsulate tears
I want for nothing, I live for nothing
I am waiting to die but I am afraid of dying

Lord, in your mercy, hear my prayer

Crestfallen emotion
Wallowing in guilt
and drowning for evermore

Falling deeper into fear
My inner self is now
a sleeper of stone

Help me.

My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion. It's not that the words are sad, they sort of are, but hearing it overplayed on soft rock radio stations for the past 8 years makes me depressed.

True.

Plus it didn't help much that during the 1998 Oscars@ it was sung waaaaaaaaay to often on an already too long of broadcast awards show!  ;D

Again, I started to believe that Celine was going to start singing, "The Oscars@ will go on and on and ON AND ON!!!" that year.  :D

Yes you are mistaken, jaypunkchick.  "In The Air Tonight" is from my high school graduating year of 1981, so it isn't a 1990's depressing song, perhaps one from the 1980's.  The song was featured on Collins' first breakthrough solo lp, "Face Value" also from 1981.
