1998 was when the "real 90's" was on its last legs basically. Alana Davis, Natilie Merchant and La Bouche were still on the charts in 98 in the US? I didn't know that. Those artists were so 1994-1996 I feel. La Bouche's singer "Melanie Thorton" died in a plane carsh in 2000 or 2001. Melanie was also in the dance group "Le Click". I think they had a hit in 1994 or 95 with "Tonight Is The Night". She was very underrated I feel in that her voice was one of the best that mainstream dance music had ever seen. Rod Stewart was charting in 98 too? Dang!

I see Cruel summer is in the top 40!! I remember that song coming out. In 1998, at this moment, I was enjoying my 6th grade spring break. I had no girlfriend, I wore Fuba and bigger pants than I do now, and I loved every second!

1998 was the year of a few songs I really enjoyed ...

You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet by London Bus Stop featuring Randy Bachman
God is A DJ - Faithless
Kung Fu Fighing - London Bus Stop featuring Carl Douglas
Paradise City - N-Trance
Dreams - The Corrs
So Young - The Corrs

just looking at that chart. no britney spears, backstreet boys, eminem, limp biskit...yet...it wouldn't be too long before teen pop and rap metal too control.

The Way by Fastball...loved that song! Closing time by Semisonic is great as well.

I miss the way song and closing time and 1998 is the best year ever I remember songs in 1998 but 1998 when america was strong and mighty before 9/11 and bush came to office the "real 90's era ended there

I think they came to America in 1997, but it might have been late '96.

I remember the Backstreet boys breakthrough around 1997. But, they very well could have debuted in 1996 and have made a slight mark on the charts.

Eh I didn't care for '98.  That was the year my aunt died, the only time I really had to deal with death as a kid.  I wasn't in to music quite yet but looking back that year didn't really have any good music,  the movies that year weren't that great either, and you had that stupid Monica Lewinksy affair going on as well.

That's the main thing I remember about '98 is the Lewinski thing, it was simply everywhere. It was constantly joked about on late night TV, and still is, lol. Movies umm Saving Private Ryan, The Wedding Singer, You've Got Mail to name a few. Wasn't a whole lot into music yet, but I remember certain songs like "My Heart Will Go On", "Crush"- Jennifer Paige (I think this was played at the 6th grade halloween dance), a couple songs from Robyn, "When The Lights Go Out"- Five, "One Week"- Barenaked Ladies, "I'll Be"- Edwin McCain, obviously boy band stuff was big, Spice Girls were still popular.

Yeah, I didn't care for 1998 either. And you're right, the music was corny in '98, like that song "Make Em Say, Ughhh" by Master P, and the movies also weren't that great (there was Deep Impact and Armaghedon which were 2 movies about the same thing). I was also going through some hard times in my personal life. In fact, I can honestly say that 1998 sucked from Jan. 1 - Dec. 31.

1998 was actually a very good year for me. It was my Junior year in HS and I got art real heavily and I'd draw for hours on end. I met some really cool people who were friends of my cousins and they'd come over and we'd have a blast. We would go ghost hunting and stuff - yeah, we were weird, but there are worse things we could've been doing, lol.  ;D

I actually think 1998 was a pretty good year (both personally as well as pop culturally). It seemed sort of like a toned down 1997 if you know what I mean? Even though boy bands and such were gaining steam, it's the last year that truly feels "old school".

Sure, many things from 1999-01 are kinda "older" or "less cool" now, but most don't truly seem like another decade. 1998 does, and I mean that as a compliment.

I think the years 1992-1998 are the ones that really smack of 1990s.  1991 and 1999-2001 are kind of fringy, but '90s of anything.

At the time, in 1999, it still felt very 90's to me as I didn't know what things would be like going into the 2000's (which was still a scary reality despite that it's just a number). Now, looking back, it still looks to me like 1999 is just a part of the 90's as any other year from that decade. It may be even one of the more defining years that demonstrate the 90's in all it's glory.

^ Back in '99 I used to think all that stuff would date very quickly. Well, I guess Pokemon sort of did, but to date, it's probably the last watermark year for pop culture (to a lesser extent, 2001 was too).

But, I was always telling people "Hey, some of this stuff is cool, but we'll be laughing at it by 2003". I was wrong on that. ;D

I think I'm actually laughing about stuff in 2003 now than I am about stuff that happened in 1999. Let's just say one thing I wouldn't mind disposing of from the 90's is the advent of dumb reality shows. Let's bring Candid Camera back, lol Now THAT's reality, lol

^ Or America's Funniest Home Videos (well, it's still on, but I miss the Bob Saget years).

I forgot about it till you mentioned that, but I loved Candid Camera - especially seeing how people reacted when they were told they were on. ;)

Some stuff has dated, but you're right that other stuff hasn't really. 1999 is still very much '90s though, 2000 is '90s like as well.

Well certainly from a 1999 perspective it's very 1990s. Hell, even 2000 is pretty nineties in a lot of ways, but I think the part of the '90s that really feels like another decade is 1998 and before, and especially 1996 and before.

I think the boybands, Pokemon, etc. is sort of laughable now, but has somehow still been considered "new" and "current" because people still talk about them and they live on in smaller ways, such as YuGiOh and Disney pop acts.

I also thought the stuff would date really quickly, not define the next decade!  ;D

Classic stuff. Everytime I see Ron Livingston or one of the other actors from "Office Space", I refer to them by their character in the film.  :)

weird, for me 1998 was the first year that doesn't feel "old school" 1996-1997 feel semi old school. Like transition years from the pre-everybody has a cell phone/internet/boy bands/britney/instant gratification/24 hour news/no DVD/No MP3 90's to what we have today.

For me, old school ended around 1995.

Yeah, 1995, definitely. 1996 is true mid-90s, very different from 1997, which is late 90s.

1997 was the first signal of what was to come. That was when you all of a sudden needed a cell phone to keep up with the times, SUV's started to become popular family cars, you were truly missing out by not having the internet. The Spice Girls signaled the coming boy bands and teenybopper era. Basically, in 1995 and a slightly lesser extent 1996, you could live life as if it was 1990, you could get by with no computer or cell phone. But by 1997 you needed to get plugged in.
