old school hip-hop/grunge rock- early '90s, r&b/hip-hop- mid '90s, teen pop/hip-hop/r&b- late '90s. R&b and hip-hop became dominant in the mid '90s, in the late '90s teen pop like Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Hanson, 98 degrees, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore entered the scene.

Grunge was pretty big, along with Electronica, Rap, and Teen Pop.

Listen to the radio today, and you'll have an idea.  1997 on isn't much different, an even some early '90s music could pass for today (although more early '90s music sounds dated)

Everybody has a different view of '90s music, those who younger in the '90s like myself generally will think of the '90s as being more about the teen pop of the late '90s. Those who are bit older will think more of the grunge or old school hip-hop of the early '90s and might consider the late '90s pop to be more '00s like, while I see a divide between the late '90s and the '00s. In reality both are part of '90s music.

Depends on what country you are in at the time basically.  Grunge and Rap were big in America.  For us Canadians, it was a mix of Grunge, Rap and alot of Dance Music
