I first ventured into the online world in January of 1996, though my folks had had a computer as far back as the mid-80s.

It's funny to think how relatively low-tech things were back then. When I first started using the Internet for research, most of us were still using 14.4 or 28Kbps modem connections (though to be honest, *I* was stuck with an even slower modem at the time). Now, DSL connections and cable modems are virtually everywhere. Full-motion video and audio streaming were little more than novel media with inconsistent results; I recall trying to watch NBC Pro in the computer lab at college, but the stream kept freezing up and audio was frequently out of sync with the picture. Of course, the technology has improved a bit since then.  :)

1997. VERY slow dial-up, I remember everything constantly froze and was very low-tech. I was looking at comic book websites. The only thing back then were these graphically unadvanced converted alt newsgroup sites and personal webpages.

I LOVE Internet history.

Anyway, I think it began to emerge from the underground around 1989, but the real boom didn't hit until maybe the second half of 1994.  By 1996 or '97 most people knew of its existence, but it wasn't until 1999 or even 2000 that it became quintessential the way a phone or TV is.

I never used the internet until 1997, when it was required of all students at my H.S. to have internet training.  After that, I only used it at school, since we didn't have a computer at home.  I didn't have my own internet access until 2001.

I first got the Internet around 1998.  It was a dial-up connection through a provider that charged by the minute.  I got 30 minutes for $30 per month, and for each minute I went over, I had to pay $1 :o

EDIT:  Also, in those days, pages took forever to load, so you can bet I always exceeded the 30 minutes by a large amount.  Of course, my dad had to pay for it.  I told him that I would re-imburse him, but I never did, and I never will.  I wanted internet where it was just a flat fee, but of course, my dad went with the closest provider  ::)

Though my mom remembers once at a Parent/Teacher conference at our school in '94.  She was talking to a couple other people, and there was a guy who worked there on one of the computers.  One of the other people asked the guy "What are you doing?" He said "I'm surfing the web!" And everyone's like "Wha?!?!"  LOL.

I first used it in 1994, and my IP was Prodigy. I was completely blown away by the experience. The world had never seen anything like it. It was truly like having the world at your fingertips. By the way, anyone else hear use Prodigy back then? They were great, and their service had AOL beat by a mile. For some reason, I guess they didn't do too well and AOL bought them out.

Well, I remember getting on a few BBS systems in like 1989 or so. Had to dial long-distance. Does that count?

I didn't really use the *real* internet until around 1998 or so - at work. Didn't really see what all the fuss was about, but it was fun.

It was either late 1995 or early 1996 at a friend's house who was mega rich & could afford it. I was amazed at eveything they had at their finger tips like fighting game moves (eg. Mortal Kombat 3) & all sorts of crazy stuff all the time any time of the day. I didn't even have a PC back then. I still remember one of my friends at school talking about bulletin boards back in 1993 or 1994 & i had no idea what he was on about & couldn't have possible grasp the concept of the internet back then. Technically the internet has been around for a around three decades or more, but the the world wide web or information super highway as we know it now only sprung to life around 95 or 96. I'm a bit vague on that since i didn't give a sh!t about it at the time seeing as it didn't directly effect me cause there was no way i could have afforded it at the time. I just thought of it as another one of those rich person things.

The first time I went on myself was in the summer of '96. I went with my dad to his office on a weekend when he had to do some work for a few hours, so I was "introduced" to it on one of the other computers in the office. Let's just say I was glued for about 4 hours. ;D

Of course it was extremely basic, but I remember looking up information about movies and artists I liked, as well as Yellow Page listings and stuff. That was the last time I think, where I was just absolutely amazed at some kind of technology or invention.

We got it at home in very early '97, and had dial up. I began going on enough for it to be a part of daily life around the middle of '98.

Although I started hearing about it in '94 I didn't really know what it was. It seemed very computer tech-ie to me. ;D

I think the World Wide Web came out around 1993 (not the internet) and my first memories of using the Internet is in 1996 when we got dial-up, our school was networked in 1997, though I didn't really become a regular user until about 98.

My fondest early internet memories are message boards - my interests back then included keepng tropical fish, sci-fi, science (all sorts) esp fish, space.etc, philosophy, history.etc. I also remember playing games such as Doom.etc for the first time online and thinking how cool it was you could actually play with someone half way across the world!

The first time I went "on-line" was with my friend in 1995. She had AOL, a completely brand new thing, and we went into a chatroom. Needless to say, I was blown away.

I didn't actually get internet installed in the house until the late 90s, but even then I didn't really find a use for it.

It's amazing how much things have changed. I actually used to go on my computer without the internet all the time -- now I can't fathom going on without clicking on Internet Explorer. Computers have basically become Internet Machines.

I remember back in the Spring of '96 this girl was talking about a guy that I knew so I asked her how she met him, and she mentioned about meeting him over the Internet so I'm like, "What on earth is that?????"  ;D

She gave me an explanation on what it was, but I had never been on it and had no idea how it worked. I was very very curious.  ???

Finally over the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday, my Dad introduced it to the whole family down in the basement's computer office. Everyone crowded around like it was an extra-terrestrial!

I remember that I had to take umpteen steps just to get a connection! Also remember it being sloooow, and that was the norm (sometimes I would even grab something to eat while I waited for the page to download!). That wasn't even 10 years ago....

Funny you say that, I think the Internet (as well as word processing, etc) was the thing that got the masses using the pc, and showed that the PC wasn't just for work or for geeks with nothing better to do. It also resulted in an alarming number of teenage girls using msn, e-mail etc. I can remember all the trends...icq, Napster, Personality tests, Online virtual pets, Myspace. Good old message boards/forums had remained since before the WWW was even created.

Long before I had ever heard of a "chat room", I would chat with some friends using the old "terminal" and "NetLink" programs that came with our PCs. I'm fairly certain these were Microsoft programs you could use for accessing Unix servers and similar applications, thought at the time, I had no need for those uses. We'd just call each other up and connect....at a speedy 3400 baud rate! Sometimes my buddy (who was on Compuserve at the time) would send me news stories and I'd save 'em on a floppy disk for later viewing. I probably still have 'em somewhere in my archives.  ;D I'm a self-confessed packrat.

However, these were person-to-person connections, so in retrospect they were really just the text versions of phone callls...as opposed to chat rooms where more than two people could join in the fun.

I believe I got access in '97 or '98, shortly after we got internet access where I worked. Back then I had a custom built 266MHz computer running Windows 95 with a whopping 23.3 modem.....wow, the power. I'm pretty sure I got connected about a year before the V.90 modems came out. I used a service from a local telephone company for access. For searches I usually tried Alta-Vista first, then Hot Bot, then Excite. If those didn't yield the desired results I would try Ask Jeeves' and Dog Pile. Today I just use Google.

First time I'd used the internet was on one of those free AOL trial basis back in '93. Back then we got a whopping TEN HOURS free for a month. Ack. Well I used it primarily to send email to my girlfriend at the time, who'd moved across the country a couple months earlier. Only had it for a month, and ended up going over the 10 hours, so I had to pay like $20 for the time I went over (which really isn't bad overall, but if I used it then like I did today it would have been hundreds). A month or so later I moved away to a university and got "free" (tuition-paid) internet access and I've been on it pretty much ever since. I had to drop back to dial up on rare occasion (in the home anyway), but I'll never go back again unless I'm stuck in a place where broadband is simply not in place.

The first time I ever used the Internet was in the second half of 1995. It was to look up the official web site of the then-current movie Toy Story, www.toystory.com. I was going through an 80s nostalgia phase at the time, so the first few sites I looked up after that were fan sites for 80s cartoons and tv shows, like "Transformers" and "Airwolf". After a while, though, I realized that there was a whole load of porn on the Internet. So pretty soon, I was mostly using it to do searches for naked pictures of Jenny McCarthy!  ;D

First time on the Internet was in 1995 when my then-roommate let me try out AOL which she had installed on her PC....I got the Internet myself in 2002, via AOL 4.0, I now have 9.0 Security Edition, I have AOL because I can charge the monthly fee to my phone bill, no checking account or credit card needed.

When I first got AOL my mental health staff were worried that I might stay on the Internet 'all day' and not interact with my peers...Seems they probably heard of so-called 'Internet Addiction' and I think they were worried that I would access 'inappropriate' websites aka porn or gambling...

They no longer worry because yes I do get out of the house both to take care of my needs and to get out and away for a while. I think once the newness of having the Net wears off one starts doing other things again.

I first knew about the internet sometime in 1991, but didn't realize it was until later on.  I was in middle school and one of the classrooms had access to email.  All I knew about it was that you could write to students at other schools over the computer.  I thought that was wild, but I didn't get to write to anyone back then.

I started becoming aware of the internet in 1994.  Our high school had one computer with internet access.  A classmate I knew had an AOL account (back when you paid by the hour).  He let me and a few others check it out.  We messed around in the chat rooms for awhile which was cool.

Later in 1995, our school had a few internet capable PC's, now finally with unlimited access.  So, I'd be in the library there and type up all sorts of websites to see what existed.  I was on the internet over at the school quite a few times between 1995 and 1998.  1997 was a fun time because we had web access in a smaller classroom where we'd hang out and listen to tunes off "Spinner.com".  Anyone remember them?

I finally had my own computer in the summer of 1998 and went with AOL.  I had problems later on trying to cancel, but I'll save that story for another time.  Sometime in August I was officially wired to the net from home.  The chat rooms were great (not like today).  The website designs were getting much better too.

I DJ online these days.  Running a 90's hits station at http://www.hits105.com so I'm still having fun on the net.

Yeah I spent some time using Free I, etc. during the very late 90s and the year 2000.

Here's what Yahoo looked like in 1995:

And you wanted a time machine?  This as close as you'll get.  Here is an ARCHIVE of early internet posts.  20 years worth actually:

Kinda cool reading a post from 1982, where people where talking about how hard it was to believe that Paul Simon (or was it McCartney, hard to tell but I'm assuming Simon because it is referring "S&G") is 39 years old.  Well, back then he was.

I am not a tech savvy computer person but technically I first used the internet in 1988, but that was not the same "world wide web"  internet of today.  I used it again for research around the mid 90s I believe.  I did not become a regular user until 1999.  I had AOL in the beginning too, I hated it.

Thanks Chris. The Google link is awesome 8) We became regular internet users around the same time('99). I could only imagine how different the internet must have been in 1988.

I first remember hearing about the Information Superhighway in early 1994 when Letterman used to always joke about it.

I didnt use the internet until I got to university in 1996 and used it to look up movies and formula one racing. Didnt use the email address i had though. Then I finally got email access in late 97 when i started working for Ericsson. It opened up a new world for me thats for sure. Emails were slow for me though as they got routed via Sweden everytime LOL

Then got internet at home in 2001 and Broadband in late 04.
