Subject: PBS Kids Shows of the 1990's

Written By: nostaglic4the90s on 03/05/06 at 1:40 am

I have fond memories of coming home from school on rainy days in the mid 1990's and watching PBS from about 4:00 until 6:00 when the news came on.  They had some great shows on during those years.  I distinctly remember my favorites being Arthur, Magic School Bus, and Wishbone, which all appeared in succession.  Some other good ones were Kratts Creatures, Carmen Sandiego and Reading Rainbow.

Unfortunately, I think most of those are off the air now, although I have caught some new episodes of RR recently.  Lavar Burton is one dedicated man to stick with the show all these years; a great guy.

Anyone else care to share thoughts on these shows or others?

I was born in 1982, so when kids shows in the 90s were popular, I was too old for them.  I never watched Barney, or any of the other shows you mentioned.  The only PBS kids show I ever remember watching was Sesame Street, but then who didn't watch that as a kid?  My sister though, she was into Wishbone and Barney and Arthur, seeing as she was  born in 1987.

You just triggered another 90's memory attack. LOL ;D

Anyway, believe it or not, I like Barney when it came on in the 90's. I can't stand him today, but I was the oposite back then. Another good one was Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Every episode was beautiful except those opera ones. How about Lamb Chop's Playalong? Remember that one?

I love these 90's trips.

I watched PBS in the early 90's so I remember all this stuff. I used to watch Barney religously in '92-'93 but after that I out grew him and I pretty much outgrew watching PBS all together by '94. I do remember that we used to watch reading rainbow in our 3rd grade class back in 1995. What about Shining Time Station? I used to love that show.

Shining Time Station was an interesting one, too.  I don't remember it as much because it was on when I was younger, but I recall I was always fascinated by the tiny conudctor man who lived in the cupboard.

Lamb Chop had the best ending song ever.  "This is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friend...."  Hahaha, Sherry got so mad at the puppetts by the end.  ;D

I was obsessed with Barney until I got to Kindergarden('94) when suddenly he was uncool(anyone remember the "Tic tac toe, three in a row. Barney got shot by a G.I. Joe." song?). But before that I had everything Barney. I also remember watching Seasame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine, and of course Lamb Chop. I even have a Lamb Chop keychain on my purse right now. And then as I got older I loved the Magic School Bus, Wishbone, and Bill Nye the Science guy(heck, I still miss this show!).

Favorites were Lamb Chop, Sesame Street, Carmen Sandiago, Magic School Bus, Kratt's Creatures, Zoom (which I don't think came till about '99, so just barely considered 90s).  I thought Shining Time Station was depressing, felt the same way about Reading Rainbow and Barney....oh dude does anyone remember "The Puzzle Place"?

hey guys!

I've been racking my brain trying to remember this old show that used to come on pbs.
the intro was kind of cartoonish, with a guy playing a flute, and wearing green tights.
also, he had a fox that was fallowing him. the show seemed to have a few short stories that made up the show.
hope somebody can remember this. :-\\

I was born in 1983, so I was too old to like Barney or any of the PBS shows in the '90s.  I do remember watching Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood in the late '80s however.  I can remember one episode of RR where Lavar Burton dressed as Dracula.  I do remember Bill Nye the Science and Carmen San Diego, however.  I think we watched Bill Nye in my science class around 1995.  I used to think up a parody of Bill Nye in middle school called Bill Nye the Militia Guy, where he's an anti-government extremist showing kids how to make pipe bombs and fire semi-automatic rifles in the coming war against the NWO. This was in the mid '90s when a lot of news coverage of anti-government militias in the wake of the OKC bombing.  My sense of humor at the time was very much influenced by Mad TV, which liked to take kids' shows and do edgy and outrageous parodies of them.

My faves are Carmen Sandiego, Ghost Writer, Square One, and Puzzle Place. I used to have a crush on Carmen host Greg Lee when I was 12. He only looked hot in the first and second seasons, though. I would watch Carmen Sandiego religiously back in '92. If I had known, I should've recorded every Carmen Sandiego episode there was.

Anyone remember Dr. Ticktock's Ticktock Minutes? They used to come on back in the 90's after shows and teach safety through catchy songs like "Stranger Danger". They still show the original Ticktock Minutes occasionally to this day! (I know because one came on before Scholar's Bowl, which I am hooked on."

:o i never thought of it like that. i always thought "lambchop" was a term of endearment. like, "oh, you're my little lambchop." you know, "cutie." now that i think about it, though, that sounds silly. so i'm probably wrong.

I do remember watching Barney, Arthur, Puzzle Place, Lamb Chop, shining time station( during my very early childhood), and Noddy. I'm sad that most of those shows are off the air now and kids these days don't get to enjoy them like I did. Now they have new technology these days and the programs are garbage. Just because technology has improved doesn't make it better. I also wish they would have had the block for school aged kids when I was that age and right now. I just missed Bill Nye, Carmen San Diego and Magic school bus adn the other shows for older kids. Now all they have is show for preschoolers. it supposed to be PBS KIDS! Not PBS Toddlers. And that sprout channel is just as bad. I think itnstead of wasting their money on Sprout, PBS should have made a channel with all the older shows and the p-pals. That way kids these days could enjoy the great 90s programs.

And that sprout channel is just as bad. I think itnstead of wasting their money on Sprout, PBS should have made a channel with all the older shows and the p-pals. That way kids these days could enjoy the great 90s programs.

My son was born in 89 and my daughter was born in 91 so I did a lot of watching PBS with them. They both liked Barney, Arthur, The Magic School Bus and Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego. I liked Shining Time Station more than they did. My grandson is 23 months and he just loves Barney, so I get to watch it all over again.

Does anybody remember that show that came on like 5 am and it was people dressed up as animals. there was a lady who was dressed as a parrot and a guy dressed as a tiger I think. I can't remember. Any help please?

I remember that!  In fact, that was my reason for reading through this - to find out what that show was.  I used to get up really early with my dad when he was getting ready for work and watch that show until I fell back to sleep before getting up for school.

Does anyone remember a PBS show where there was a lady who taught you about nature and science?  I think the lady lived on a farm or near a forest in a cabin or a little house, and every show she would catch some worms or turtles or something and teach you something about nature.  I seem to remember her being kind of a hippy type.  It probably aired in the 80s or early 90s.  Anyone know what it was called?

Under the Umbrella Tree was on the Disney Channel. I had kinda forgotten about that show.

Anyone remember that shameless Canadian Barney ripoff Dudley the Dragon?

http://www.stills.ca/Various/slides/Dudley.jpg

One of Canada's trippiest exports since... The Safety Dance?  ;D It seems like Daniel DeSanto was on every PBS and Nickelodeon show -- Dudley the Dragon, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Magic School Bus...

I watched a lot of PBS, but I watched Nick and Fox Kids the most. I remember Dudley the Dragon, Magic School Bus, Barney (I did eventually grow out of it), Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street (watched for a short while), Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Bill Nye (mostly in science class), Arthur (it was okay)... wow, a lot of shows were on PBS back then.

I loved the PBS shows of the 90's I was born in 86 and we only had 3 channels. Every evening I would watch it. I was obsessed with The Big Comfy Couch, Pappyland (the pappy man taught you how to draw), Sagwa, Kidsongs and one other show that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of. It was on a ranch, there was a man who talked to a prarie dog in the beginning and went to visit a pretty rabbit puppet in a garden on every episode.

I think this was a PBS show because I couldn't think of it being any other type of production.  I was born in 1993 and I barely remember it so its most likely mid 90's and not very popular. It was about a farmer and his animal friends. He sang a song with his horse "Buddy" and had a dog Ol' Blue.  This is killing me!!

A lot of this stuff is still on PBS kids during the week in the daytime.  And my daughter watches the Magic School Bus on Qubo.  Don't know if there might have been an older version of it though.

But I do agree, most of it these days is like PBS Toddlers.  My ex's kid used to watch it all day, 12 years ago.  Even today it seems the lineup has barely changed.  Gone are the good old shows like 321 Contact, Electric Company, Square One, Mister Rogers, etc.

Hi guys, great posts and some awesome shows I totally forgot about from the 90's.  I still need your help though.  There is a show that I remember from the late 90's and it starred a man dressed as a conductor (no sadly not Shining Time Station).  He had a map and he would point to a place..for example..the dentist's office, or the post office.  Once the viewer "arrived" there was a large figure in a costume (the size of Barney or thereabouts) and he would explain the duties of the place.  The most vivid thing for me was the ending.  There would be a dance party with about 20 kids and all the viewers at home would join in!  This has really been killing me for about 3 years.  I have asked all my friends...looked endlessly online and asked in forums on Retrojunk.com.  If anyone has any clue please let me know!

Muppet Babies
Alegra's Window
Gullah Gullah Island
The Busy World of Richard Scary
Gumby
Little Bear
Rupert

are the ones I remember from when I was really young. I probably left out some big ones. I guess Blue's Clues too, but I was like 6 when that came out I think.

I'm pretty positive I always used to see it on PBS at like 10 in the morning. I've been looking it up for a while and I can't remember anything else about it to describe it more.

My favorite shows to come home and watch after school as a kid in the 90s (most of these were late 90s shows) were Arthur, Dragon Tales, and Zoom. Especially Zoom! I absolutely LOVED Zoom!!!!

The show would make you think of "Amigos" with "Perro Pepe".. I been trying for years and noone else knows, it was on TV as far as i can remember in 1996 when i was 4 i used to watch it...

Please help me figure this one out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now, I need help remembering this show. I'll give you every detail I remember.

It was set in a rural area. It looked like Japan, because there was a shrine. The main character was a girl who had purple hair and wore a red bow in her head. Her shirt was white, and her pants were red. She was a maiden at the aftermentioned shrine.

Her friend was a witch. The witch wore a purple dress and a purple witch hat. She had long blonde hair and yellow eyes (but in her first appearences she had short red hair and red eyes). She also used a wand and rode on a magic vine.

The shrine got visited by a female ghost who had long green hair and wore a blue dress and a blue cape with an orange tie on the front of it. She also wore a blue wizard hat which had a yellow sun on it. Her legs were replaced with a ghost tail, everything above it was flesh.

The characters would go on countless adventures. I remember it running from 1996 to 1998. It was anime-like (it was made in the US but the art style looked similar to Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh).

I'm beginning to think I made it up.  :(

That sounds like Gula Gula Island.

Nobody mentioned Mark Kistlers POV; a drawing show. Bannanas In Pajamas was Fox show. Or Big58 in my city, wfte 58 aka UPN. I remember the show with the cowboy/farmer with the horse and the blue dog. I watched just about everything that was on pbs.

I remember I used to watch KERA 13. There once was this completely drugged-up show that aired for a few months in 1995 before being pulled off the air.

The opening sequence had a group of kids (aged about 10-12) at an arcade. The camera would pan over to one of those old-fashioned shock machines. All of the kids would hold on, with each kid holding hands and the kid at either end would hold on to the bars. So, they're getting shocked, and then this creepy computer-animated face would appear on the machine and say the following: "DO YOU FEEL THE POWER OF THE LORD?!?!" in an MCP-like voice. The machine would then buzz "ZAPPP!!!" and all of the kids were sent flying through a portal that had opened at the top of the machine. They would land in a colorful world (IIRC, it was a forest). That was the end of the opening sequence.

The show would consist of games, crafts, and songs. Sounds simple enough, huh? Guess what else it had! The show would often have a skit about militia, similar to the "Bill Nye the Militia Guy" thing someone posted earlier on this thread. The children also encouraged that you should do drugs through some song, I vaguely remember the lyrics:

"Drugs, drugs, everyone does drugs! Drugs make your problems go away, so do them toooodaaaay!"

They did a version of "Stranger Danger" saying that you should talk to strangers.

And what was even worse was the "Porno Flick of the Day". The kids would spin a wheel, and whatever porn movie it landed on would be shown. After the movie, they'd sing a song about it and do a craft related to it.

The kids would also explore the land that they got transported to. It started kid-friendly, until they found mushrooms and one girl had a satchel and she'd collect the mushrooms in it. Then they had a picnic and they ate the mushrooms. A 1-minute drug trip would be shown. They then recovered.

Every episode ended with the kids singing goodbye to the creatures in the land. Then the ending sequence would come on. The kids would all jump into the portal, and they'd fall out of it and land back in the arcade in front of the shock machine. They'd play a few arcade games and then exit the arcade. That was the end of the outro sequence. The credits showed the children skipping down the street, singing happily.

...good God, who in their right mind would even air that on PBS Kids in the daytime? Thank God that it only aired 20 episodes before it got axed. I wonder how many kids were found dead after doing the stunts the children would perform on the show. And trust me, you do NOT want to know what the stunts were.

It sounds more like a parody of a kids' show, but trust me, this was aired on PBS back in the day. I think the name of the show was "Magic Machine" or "Metal Machine"...I really think it was the latter.

Today, this show would definitely air on Adult Swim.  ;D

Does anyone remember the puzzle place? I was very little when they still aired it, but it's probably my favourite PBS kids show. I liked that all the kids were of different ethnicities and from different parts of the US.
Another one I liked was Seven Little Monsters, which premiered in 1999. That show was very underrated sadly.

Did Solid Snake show up in it?

I was born in 1996 and watched some of the shows you guys recall in the early 2000s.
Arthur, Barney (my favorite... for some reason), Sesame Street, Teletubbies, Reading Rainbow, Wishbone, Magic School Bus, and Bill Nye... not sure if you remember Between the Lions and Boohbah, but I watched those too.
Sonic the Hedgehog was on Toon Disney, not PBS.
And whoever posted about that weird adult show... you're crazy!
I vaguely remember the show Fiona and Kristy talked about. Yeah, they danced at the end and invited the viewers along to clap their hands, etc. Wasn't there an episode taking place at a construction site?

I remember not giving a damn that I was 8 years old and watching Barney, back in like 2003. I grew out of it sometime after... around 2006 or so. I mostly watched it to make fun of it.

1998-2003 was my main time watching PBS Kids. I watched almost everything on there but I don't remember everything on there. Arthur was my main show on there, I watched many episodes on VHS and the channel itself throughout my whole time watching the network.

I stopped watching Barney and Teletubbies after pre-K.

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood ended after I finished pre-K, and Zoboomafoo ended after I finished Kindergarten.

I mainly watched Sesame Street from age 2 to pre-K but I was only able to watch it on some occasions in Kindergarten due to it only coming on weekday mornings.

I vaguely remember Adventures from the Book of Virtues, one of the forgotten PBS Kids shows of all time.

The PBS Kids shows I still watched in 1st & 2nd grade were Arthur, Cyberchase, Zoom, Dragon Tales, Liberty's Kids, Clifford, Berenstain Bears, George Shrinks, Seven Little Monsters, and Sagwa.

Yeah pretty much this. I would say from Pre School upto 2nd Grade were my main PBS years, so the 1998-2003 era. Perhaps I'm biased, but I feel like that was the best era for PBS in the network's history.

1996-2003 were the best years for PBS, since that's when most of their iconic programming premiered and stayed. Around the mid 2000s, most of their shows went on reruns, while some of them had new episodes until 2006.

Alright, I could live with the late 2006 shift so long as it was only killing off y'all '90s babies' corny mid '00s Cartoon Network shows, but now I find out that it claimed Reading Rainbow, too?! I'm officially angry! >:(

My PBS days were in the late '80s and early '90s, and I used to watch a lot of it because we didn't have cable back then and it was one of only four channels that we had. These were my favorite shows back in the day.

I do remember most of the shows.

I liked Reading Rainbow, too, BTW you all should check out the DMX parody of the theme song.

I kinda think Zoom was PBS Kids' dark side. It was a show where kids mostly improvised, and a lot of their interests were revealed (e.g. Spice Girls). Plus, on the website, they reviewed things like Mario and Hamtaro, and kids gave their opinions (honestly when have you seen the PBS Kids site reference freakin' InuYasha of all things?!).

Oh my god, I remember that Barney song. "Barbie called the doctor and the doctor said: sorry, Barbie, Barney's dead!"

I used to watch MADtv with my neighbor alot in the mid 1990s, maybe that's why I'm so screwed up nowadays. Public Schoolhouse Rock, anybody?

I don't remember what channel it was on, but I used to watch a show called "Eureka's Castle". Also the Big Comfy Couch.

I watched all the shows the OP talked about too, but I was more a Nick Jr. Kid.

Muppet Babies
Alegra's Window
Gullah Gullah Island
The Busy World of Richard Scary
Gumby
Little Bear
Rupert

are the ones I remember from when I was really young. I probably left out some big ones. I guess Blue's Clues too, but I was like 6 when that came out I think.

I loved Nick Jr., I think I was mostly in it for Blue's Clues, the anime (Littl' Bits and Little Twins), and Face. "Hi there, Face here!" Loved that guy to death. I was more of a PBS kid though... holy carp the Big Comfy Couch! YEAH!!! I had the clock rug, a replica of the couch, and dolls of Lunette and Molly. Who remembers their ten-second tidy LOL "and the clown jumped over the moon!"

How about Sonic the Hedgehog? That show kicked ASS!

That was on ABC in the early mornings. There was another Sonic show I remember being on like WPIX? The one with the Sonic Says. I remember entering a contest and you had to write down those Sonic Says messages for a week, and if you won, you got a thousand dollars at like KB Toys. The winner was an autistic kid like me from Virginia named Christian. I was so jealous of him!!!

Okay, so about PBS, around 5 or 6, they'd air this goddamn commercial where there'd be a black screen, some children laughing softly in the background, and then a door would open and it zoomed in REAL fast to show the mascots of the PBS kids shows, anthropomorphic versions of their logo, blinking between colors at a seizure-inducingly rapid pace while yelling "SURPRISE!!!" and there was confetti and people screaming and laughing at the top of their goddamn lungs. That commercial scared the CRAP out of me every damn time, to make matters worse there was a shortened version that started with the zoom in that scared me EVEN MORE, so after the funding credits of a show would end and the logo that also featured the mascots (which never scared me, I loved it!) ended, I'd pull the covers over myself, plug my ears, close my eyes, and hum loud so if the commercial came on, I'd drown it out and avoid seeing it. I think they stopped airing it because it scared kids.

Also? MAGIC SCHOOL BUS. WAS MY sheesh. That is all.

You're referring to the legendary Chris-chan. Who went on to vandalize a Sonic Boom stand at GameStop and pepper spray an employee all cause Sonic had blue arms.

and i used to watch magic school bus too. the kid named arnold was voiced by danny tamberelli, little pete on pete and pete and an all that and figure it out cast member. nickelodeon aired a show called hey arnold in 96 on the same day arthur premiered and so the connection between magic school bus and hey arnold was hilarious even if danny t wasn't arnold shortman.
