Subject: What About the '90s Will Influence the '10s, and What Won't?

Written By: velvetoneo on 03/12/06 at 11:02 pm

IMO...

What will:

-The dark and grungy aesthetic.
-Early hip-hop fashion, pre-gangsta, with the bright colors, flannel, neons, funky hairdos, et. al.
-College rock and grunge.
-High-quality animation and more intelligent TV animation.
-Intelligent TV sitcoms, sci-fi shows focusing on teenagers.
-TLC, En Vogue, Salt n' Pepa, Boyz II Men, et. al.
-Zines and high-end comic books.
-Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and other "divas."
-The anti-corporate, "indie" feel.
-Quentin Tarantino.
-Good sketch comedy shows on TV.
-Piercings and tattoos.
-Backwards baseball caps.
-Heavily layered clothing.
-The dark, industrial look.
-Britpop.

What won't:

-Teen pop.
-Goth.
-Some aspects of "bad boy" and gangsta rap, like the overt violence.
-Nu metal.

Hopefully, very little of the '90s.  They already influence the Zeroes too much!

The '90s (early-mid) really don't influence the '00s all that much, in terms of ethos and general feeling...just some bare bones early-mid '90s culture concepts. I think the '10s will see a grungy, early-mid '90s ethos applied to different cultural forms, and reinventing some things that languished through the '00s, with '90s culture run into the ground.

^I think the 2010's will be alot like the early 90's and will have alot of influinces from that 1991-1996 time period since gen Zers will want to sort of relive days were tech wasn't as prevelant as it was in the 00's. I think the 2010's(especially the mid-2010's) will have a very grungy feel to them as well.

Yeah, I agree...the '10s will be pretty damn grungy.

Well, I do hope that some of the 90's influences the 2010's.  Particularly Grunge and the whole Alternative movement, Gangsta Rap (rap in the 2010's will be darker, grittier, and more real than today's rap, hopefully), the whole "indie film" trend with movies like Clerks and Pulp Fiction, and also the whole rebellious attitude.  Basically, I hope the 2010's will be darker than the 00's in terms of pop culture.  Overt violence may or may not make a comeback in the 2010's.

Of course, one thing that probably won't is the anti-commercial attitude of the grunge bands.  It is my belief that modern day record labels, as well as MTV and such, have taken safeguards to ensure anti-commercial bands don't get mainstream.  I predict the bands will choose not to reject the commercialism of the mainstream, but to revolutionize it.  They won't rebel against it, they will try to change it.

I do hope the 2010's doesn't resemble the 90's too much.  I'd rather it be it's own decade, rather than rip off a previously existing one.  Plus, three straight decades of strong 90's similarities (even if it's different parts of the 90's) is just too much.

I don't think it'll resemble the '90s too much, it'll be more alot of nostalgia and a return of certain "mood" and concept influences of the early-mid '90s to a strong influence on popular culture.

Reading this pretty much sucks alot.

I matured at about the year 2000, which is by all means the worst decade in about 40 years in my opinion, in terms of youth culture. And although it's good to be reassured the 90's Grunge / Alternative-ness will be coming back in, I take it by the time it makes a big impact, I'll be well and truely on my way to adulthood. Stupid to think as soon as I was born, this stuff was on it's way out, as soon as I become an adult, it comes back in.

Although for that matter, I hope it does come back in. And you start to see the youth trends showing similiarities with the 90's, I honestly doubt it will be something worth calling a new "trend" for another ten years. You never know, I hope tomorrow I wake up and we'll have returned to the lost youth that I one day hope will spring up.

As far as MTV safeproofing anti-Comercial bands, by golly gosh we need to get rid of MTV.

I agree. There's alot of things about this decade I do like, but on the other hand alot of things I just can't stand either. I would really like for the '90s to make a comeback in the '10s. That was after all the decade I grew up in(born in '87), so that would really be cool to me 8).

I was born in '89 and I believe I grew up in the '90s. There are only three things I like about the '00s. I like the people that have become my friends this decade, technology, and all of the progress in roads in my area. Other than that, show me the '90s!

Sure I would love to see some 90's in the 10's (early-mid 90s), Will they? Maybe.. but as some others have said, It really needs to be its own decade.
