Hmm...reminds me of something I'm doing.  I'm putting together a collection of CDs for each and every year from 1983 to 2000.  It takes a lot of work and downloading, but it'll be worth it in the end.  When my family goes on summer vacation, we'll be listening to every CD in the batch, in order.  It'll be awesome to see some of the subtle differences in years right next to each other.  However, while I started out just doing the hit songs of each year, it eventually took on a Rock/Rap emphasis by the early 90's.  I did manage to put in Pop Music for the late 90's though, since that's what defined that era (also on the off chance that I get nostalgia from it).

Your early 90's section definitely requires Guns N Roses, Metallica, and maybe Soundgarden or Pearl Jam. Mid 90's section needs some Seal. But other than that, you did a great job at representing each section of the decade. 8)

How can you forget Oasis, or Blur, or the Smashing Pumpkins, or Greenday, or the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, U2.etc. In terms of the super-pop, those bands have to be included. And Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android' - best song of the 90s. I would compile a list, but I know it would be incomplete.

Not bad, I have to admit I didn't pay attention to a whole lot of groups or artists in "the 90's", but I DO like Tori Amos, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Liz Phair (from the "Exile in Guyville" album, anyway), Sarah MacLachlan, REM. a bit of Madonna's stuff, smatterings of Nirvana and Nine-Inch Naills.  As far as your other choices, well, I can't say - because I really don't know or can't place any of their stuff...Interesting compilation concept, though...I usually group stuff more by the tone and flow of the songs...kind of try and plant a progression so that the mood/feel moves forwards towards a certain direction.  I used to give it a whole lot more thought back in the days when you had to record to cassette tapes off of vinyl records.  That was a WHOLE lot more work.  Now, all you have to do is HAVE the songs, throw a CD in the burn drive and start making selections...If you screw up, well you can toss the CD or whatever and just do another one...

Anyway, Good luck with your project...you should probably end up with some very listenable/enjoyable stuff...

pr

Hell, what was i thinking?  Of COURSE I know the B-52's and "Love Shack"  Good tune...yeah, include them on my list above, too...

OK...my memory is coming back to me now...a bit...lol...You would have to include some of "No Doubt"...at least off of their "Tragic Kingdom" album...I'd go with "Don't Speak" and, hmmm...maybe "Different People" off that album...Ah...from Sister Hazel, "It's Hard to Say", Sheryl Crow, "All I Wanna Do", from Tori Amos I would certainly add "Crucify" off her first album, "Space Dog" of her 2nd, hmmm...maybe some of her other stuff...(I'm a big fan of her stuff...as if you can't tell...lol).  Can't think of any more right now...oh, well...

It's hard for me to pick some Tori I like more than others for most of her career, because I love her so much.

I hear ya', cloudbuster...she's quite a phenomena.  Didn't "discover" Tori until 2002 (Scarlett's Walk) and then went back chronologically and started snapping up her albums in order...interesting way to do it...it was like "time-lapse" photography, a dozen or so years of changes and growth in about 6 or 8 months of CD buying/listening...I've been listening to music a long time and I can't think of a more fascinating personality that I've come across...
