Although the 2000's have the distinction of being home to Madonna's finest music yet, I gotta give it up to her hits of the 90's.  "You'll See" would be my all-time favorite, but "I'll Remember" and "Vogue" are up there!

It seemed that in the 90's, Madonna was trying to make an image comeback after releasing some 'overly' sexual things: The Sex book, The Erotica album, and that Body of Evidence (1993) movie. She also made herself look trashy during a 1994 David Letterman interview. All those things, and more, combined together, made the public and critics turn against her. Add to that, Madonna was just overexposed, people were sick of seeing her everywhere, especially in the news.

So from 1992 to 1998 Madonna made a slow climb back to the public's arms. Sure, she never flopped in the 1990's, but she was a bit overexposed and the public's opinion of her was that she was just too trashy and sexual. Although, I do agree that there was a good chunk of sexism in those criticisms, I do agree that the Sex book was basically softcore porn. Same with the Erotica video.

Madonna made a 'mini-comeback' with her song and video, 'Take a bow', which is the biggest single of Madonna's career. It also helped Madonna sell her hit album, Bedtime Stories (1994).

But it was 1998's Ray of Light that fully brought Madonna back to critics and the public's arms. Of course, it wasn't all fuzzy and warm between Madonna and her critics. Madonna has a spiritual side too, so it wasn't all a publicity stunt. She wasn't just sucking up to the critics, and the public, she was surprising the public, and showing critics another side to herself.

Ray of Light even won her Grammy's. 

Oh, and I like Secret (1994) from Madonna's catalog the most!  ;D
