Subject: Do '90s nostalgists tend to like the '80s also?

Written By: Donnie Darko on 05/18/06 at 9:50 pm

It seems '90s nostalgists, like myself, who prefer the '90s to the '00s tend to like the '80s too. Of course some don't, but doesn't this generally seem to be the case?

Yeah, I'm both an '80s and '90s nostalgist. Though I would've liked to have been a '90s teen better.

I appreciate the 80s, but it doesn't compare to the 90s, 70s, 60s. I like the 90s cos' I can remember them, and the 60s/70s because the look/feel of them was so 'different', and it was before I was born.

Do you see the '00s as '80s-like in spirit?

I would like to be a little kid in the '80s, a teen in the '90s and a young adult in the '00s.

Same with me I appreciate the '80s and are curious a bit about them because I was alive for the last few years, so that makes me wonder about my first couple years in the '80s

60s is so much more interesting - politically and culturally - than the staid 80s

I do, but you're probably asking Trimac  ;).

Yeah that's true, like I've said I don't think the '80s are the best decade or anything.

Yeah, I see many parallels. The government (anti Bush, anti Regeanism), the worldview, obsession with tech. But in some ways they are different. The 80s feel like a very 'Modernist' decade (while the 70s were actually more 'post-modernist').

The '60s for me are so tired, though...maybe it's different in Australia, but all of American culture is controlled by a boomer oligarchy that programs everybody into thinking the '60s are the best and constantly informs them of it. It's very much my parents' music and I'm quite familiar with it. The '00s are somewhat "modernist" like the '80s or '60s, while '70s and '90s were postmodern.

More or less, that's what I am/was, and I always wished I was a 1970-74er or so. ;)

But yeah, I think you have a point. Even though there was a huge '80s/90s split at the time, and it was very fast/noticeable (1989 even was totally uncool/passe in 1993), there seems to almost be a united love of both now. Both in a way have some common factors - arcades, VHS, Nintendo, audio tapes, certain aspects of pop music (aside from grunge, etc).

I bet even, say '90s loving 1979ers who dissed the '80s as 14 year olds in 1993 (even if they dug it when they were 10 in '89) have come to like the '80s, focusing more on what they have in common with them, as opposed to what they don't.

In some ways the 00s seem like an afterthought of the 80s, like filling out the gaps the 80s somehow missed.

I pretty much am nostalgic over the 80's and 90's the most, but I enjoy every decade for something.

Yeah, even those born say 1977-1980 who hated the '80s as '90s teens have started to nostalgize over them again as young adults, due to their affection for their '80s childhood as they near 30. The same thing will probably happen with people born in roughly the late '80s like myself, as many of us dislike the '90s.

One thing the '80s and '90s have in common is a "suburban late 20th Century" charm ... which is still present today but not as much so.

Perhaps another throwback to the 60s? It seemed everyone refused to believe they were living in the 60s, with few movies actually SET in the 60s, rather some nostalgic yesteryear. 'Suburban Romanticism' seemed to originate in the 1950s, before dying off in the 60s and 70s before being revived in the 80s.

I'm a die hard '90s nostalgist. But I'll occasionaly dip into the '80s as well as other decades.

Yes, well it depends on what part of the 90's. Born in 83 I'm remember things from 85 on....as well as things like reruns from the 70s. The early 90's (late 80's) are very nostalgic for me because they were my childhood. I still get hyped over some Bobby Brown and New Edition songs as well as SWV and En Vogue. Anything past 95 isn't really nostalgic for me.

Yeah. I like both the 90's and the 80's. Alot of teens are nostalgic for both probably because alot of current teens were born in or almost born in the 80's and grew up in the 90's.
