I'm like 100% sure it was recorded in 1989, but when was it first released?

I looked on itunes and it says the album was released on February 24, 1990.

Of course, the basis for the song was Rick James' 'Super Freak'...a 1981 record...

Nothing can top the Rick James original. Hammer didn't even come close

Hammer killed a Rick James song, destroyed a Prince song and ruined a Chi-Lites classic. All this from just one album :\'(

Oh god, I'd forgotten about his cartoon series. I remember he also used to do TV commercials for KFC. I wonder if KFC had a decline in sales when those ads ran? ;D

We had the good sense not to air those ads...they would have given the kids nightmares!
He wore his usual parachute pants as he danced down a street with a bunch of kids as they head to KFC. It's about as bad as advertising can get ;D

this will always be remembered as a 1990 song and not 1989 i also know people get confused with Paula Abdul her album Forever Your Girl came out in 1988 and 3 singles chatted that year Knocked out The Way That You Loved Me and Straight Up which went to number 1 in DEC 1988 and was number 1 in Jan 1989

It's the very few songs from MC Hammer I can tolerate
Other being "Turn This Mutha Out".
"2 Legit 2 Quit" is far worse and the cartoon is among the worst of all time

The album came out in February 1990 but I'm sure it appeared once or twice on the radio in December 1989.

The Song first started playing on the Radio in Mid-January 1990 and peaked at #8 on the Charts in April 1990
It's a '90s Song. And pretty much THE first '90s Song, considering it's so popular

Actually, I had my facts wrong. I just now looked up the Billboard Info of the song and this is what I found out
The Song made it's Debut on the Billboard "Hot 100" Chart on April 22nd, 1990. It peaked at #8 on June 16th, 1990

...But he wasn't trying to....Hammer just used a sample. He wasn't trying to remake superfreak.
