Subject: '90s Valley Girls

Written By: velvetoneo on 05/23/06 at 9:25 pm

Val girls definitely existed in the '90s, albeit in an updated form. Think Clueless, Hilary from FPBA, etc. For those around, was that true? At least culture still had the Val girl obsession.

I never personally knew any valley girl personas around where I grew up. I mean, there were some ditsy kinda girls...but not to that extreme portrayed in Clueless, etc.

I think they are predominantly a Southern California phenomena, and although the stereotype obviously permeated to every high school in America, there is a difference between just a 'ditz' and a true valley girl. It's an attitude thing  ;). I think the valley girls of the 80s/90s have become the ditzy/preppie/socialites best seen in shows like The O.C.

There are definitely still some "Val Girl" types at my high school. Like girls who aren't terribly smart, are extremely superficial, and are always going shopping and having random sex.

Indeed, I think adolescent culture will always be divided into the same age-old cliques no matter what the social/cultural atittudes of the time.

The Valley Girl is timeless. Of course today they're not "cool" the way they were in the '80s and '90s.

I think the new, '00s valley girl is the upper middle-class preppie fashionista, some girl who fetishizes designer clothing and hangs out at upscale suburban malls, and spends most of their time partying and trying to attract class and rich men to them. They're not quite preppie, they're more "fashionista" and mostly sort of stupid.

Well, every single clique that's around today is either a traditional clique (Jocks, Nerds, Punks, etc.) or an updated version of a past clique (Emo Kids, Hipsters, etc.).  Valley Girls are still around today, they've just evolved with the times like most other cliques.

Yeah, they're sort of a little less ditzy and more "fashionista" than they were before...though not by very much. The preppie girls and Mischa Barton-clones have sort of taken their place.

I always saw it as an unholy alliance between Boho and Preppy. Boho/Preppy....Prepho?

You also see the Olsen sisters wearing this look. They lean more towards the Boho side. It's like a very very rich hippie, with the most expensive ugly clothing you'll ever see.

Reminds me of the whole torn/faded jeans fad of the 90s...I mean, what's up with that?  ::) Why don't you save the time and money and just get a pair of jeans from a dumpster somewhere or something, lol.

Boho? What a load of bs...they don't even know what Boho is!

Yeah what is boho, I honestly don't follow fashion much.

Boho is sort of supposed to be a very early/Beat sort of lifestyle/fashion associated with beat poetry, socialist politics, pacificism. etc. In other words, a lifestyle in diametrically opposite to the people who like to wear 'Boho' fashion!

Well, right now, the whole "boho" look is in style. There are the "hipster bohos" who shop at Urban Outfitters and like stuff like Architecture in Helsinki, then the prep-bohos/fashionistas who do it as a style.

I had no idea Architecture in Helsinki were so well known in the States...I like em, but yeah in some ways they are a bit 'pretentious'/twee, trying to be all arty and then. I much prefer groups in the ilk of New Buffalo/Animal Collective. I like the freshness of the local Australian scene in comparison to the saturated markets of overseas.
