Subject: Your '90s Life

Written By: Roadgeek on 05/30/06 at 9:03 pm

What was your life like in the '90s? Young and/or old.

I wrote an article on Retro Junk about my life in 1994-1995. Please enjoy it and leave feedback.

I'd also like to hear what your life was like.

The '90s were the last decade that revolved around the TV.

Yeah things were different than, first of all I didn't have a computer yet so that made a big difference. In the early '90s, well 1991-early 93,  lets see I played with toy cars, played outside with all my toys (which I did through the mid '90s too), learned to ride a bike, I started playing video games towards the end of the early '90s (1992) as well. I got internet in late 95, I think the Internet really altered my life.

The first half of the '90s was pre-Internet generally. The second half of the '90s had the Internet, but it was a more optional thing then, for instance the TV was still the most common source of information.

Until 1999 or so anyway, I'd say the Internet was everywhere almost by 99.

Yeah it was very big in 1997 and 1998, but it still wasn't quite everywhere yet. Around 1999-2000 Internet became like Television, an essential household item.

1998 is the last year that still has the "1989 technology" thing hanging around it. 1999+ is very 21st Century technologically; 1993-1998 were more transitional.

Although computers from 1999 look very dated, and dial-up was pretty much the only way to go then.

I first got the Internet in 1996 by the way. I remember mainly hanging around the AOL channels and email.

Man, looking at old tapes, pictures, etc just makes me realize that everything was so different around 1994 and 1995. To me at least.

I think of 1996 as the last "old school" year of the '90s. 1997 was kind of different, it sort of had that '00s teenybopper feel to it.

Yeah AOL is actually a separate service from the WWW, it just allows you to use the WWW now through their service.

My '90s life consists of three metamorphosis'

1990-1993 - I was between 8 and 11, and to me, still a kid. My last year of elementary started in the fall of 1993, but I didn't feel all that different between those few years. I matured more and got smarter of course (or so I hope so, lol). Those years were fun, in my opinion. I still held onto a lot of memories from when I was real young (sadly, a good portion of those have disappeared). The only part that was a struggle was changing elementary schools between 1992 and 1993. That was an adjustment that took me awhile to overcome and get used to.

1994-1998 - I changed a lot during this time. I was between 12-16 years old. I started Junior high and High School around this time and those were more periods of adjustment. I was heavily into music - like I always had been, but in 1996 something clicked one day and I turned into a Beatles fanatic. It took me down a road of musical artistry I had never experienced before. It introduced me to so much that it forever changed me.

1999 - I started working that summer I turned 17. This was also something that changed my life. I met someone who played a vital role in it and who has changed me forever ever since. He made such a huge impression on me. And that person is currently my boyfriend. Of course, when you start working, that independent streak starts to step in and soon you feel this need to not ask your parents for money, rather treat them out once in awhile instead. It was a very liberating time for me.

A tail-end boomer would be born about 1958-1964...my mum was born in 1957, which is sort of late Boomer, but she was not really in touch with pop culture when she was growing up (unfortunately).

What kind of 'scene' was she into when she was growing up? New Wave?

She liked stuff like Styx, Billy Joel, Kenny Loggins, Human League, disco, The Beatles (like all Boomers, even if they were only 3 when Sgt. Pepper came out).

Both my parents were in their 30's when they had me. My Dad was born in 1949 and my mom in 1952. My Dad is going to be 57 this year and my mom just turned 53.

And Donnie, don't worry - 16 seems old, but wait until you're about my age - then you'll start noticing more wrinkles in your skin, some veins that won't go away, maybe a grey hair or two. It's hard to believe you can have grey hair so young (24-25 years old) but my brother is already greying and he's going to be 27. Blame it on working and caffiene  ;D

My dad listened to a lot of '50s. He liked that song "Red Rubber Ball" (can't remember the artist at the momemt). My Dad also like a lot of '60s soul and of course, most '60s stuff. He graduated in '67 so he got to experience a lot of that great music and those special times. My mother liked a lot of the Andy Williams stuff, as well as '60s and '70s stuff.

My main interest is the '90s. But I'll occasionally dip into other decades.

If I had a time machine, I'd go back to sometime around 1994 or 1995. I'd spend a week or two there and come back to the '00s. Then I'd repeat each month.

I love 1994 and 1995. Those are my nostalgia years. A lot of times, I'll include 1996 and 1997.

I did a lot more outdoor stuff around my home...swimming, biking, athletic stuff, and just hanging out.  Pretty much only came inside to sleep, and watch TV occasionally.

Today, it seems as though computers keep people indoors most of the time.
