Subject: Playground Slang

Written By: Trimac20 on 06/04/06 at 12:50 am

What playground/schoolyard slang/catch-phrases do you remember from your childhood?

This http://www.odps.org/glossword site might help you out...

Some examples of ones I remember from childhood:

'Don't be mean!/Big meanie!'
'Big bully!'
'Liar, liar, pant's on fire!'
'Teacher's pet!'
'Pooh pooh face!'
'Pooh-bum'
'Butt-head'
'You're busted!' - you're in trouble
'Oh ma!' caught red handed (this one brings back memory)
'Loser'
'Wicked'
'Sick'
'Rad/radical'
'Cowabunga'
'Aye Carumba!'
'I'm dobbing/telling on you!' - Dobbing means telling on

lol, wonder if kids today use these?

To be honest I didn't play with the other kids too much, so I can't really remember that much.

Nah, I was antisocial back then. Sure I had friends, but usually I spent Recess alone.

I actually had quite a few friends (well one or two close friends) back in primary school. I used to go over to their houses and play basketball, trade basketball cards, play super nintendo.etc Then I became anti-social in high school..

"no duh" was a big one for me.  and i remember a bunch of kids had shirts with these strange little cartoon faces that said "whatever," "duh," etc...

"cool" came back in style while i was in elementary school.

Oh yeah 'duh', 'no duh' were big ones. I also remember 'spack', 'spastic', 'unco' (of courses these are un-PC) now, as well as some other terms which are quite offensive.

Nark was one of my favourites.

It was never clearly defined.

Not Narc (as in narcotics) but Nark as in "Nark Off".

I thought a 'Nark' was a secret government operative? Well, at least that was the original meaning.

Maybe.

We used to say to "Never nark on your mates" as well.

Similar to dobbing someone in.

Ok, this is REALLY sad to admit but a big one at my school was the following (and no, i'm not proud)...

'Ummmmmmm, I'm telling on you cause you kissed the kangaroo at half past two and you flushed him down the loo and he came out black and blue!'

Bit long-winded but effective nonetheless!

;D ;D ;D

We had a variation of that one. For instance you'd say Matt was sitting on the loo, doing a poo, at half-past-two. lol

Here's some for Americans from the northeast...(it helps if you grew up in the 70s as well)

Flatleaver:  a person who ditches his freinds to hang out with someone else.
Indian Giver:  a person who gives something as a gift and then takes it back
Car, Car, C-A-R!:  what to yell if a car is coming down your street, through your kickball game.

"I'm telling, you're smelling, you went to a black man's wedding."

"I'm telling on you, 'cus you pushed me in a lorry and you never said sorry."

We always did more of a Wayne & Garth, "Car" 'car' "Game on" 'game on'.

Just the other day my 5 year old was playing with one friend when her other friend came home.  My daughter asked if we could send Elizabeth home so she could play wih Brandyn.  I said to her "You can't be a flatleaver.".  She looked at me and said "What heck does that mean?".  LOL!!
