Subject: Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ('90s Songs)

Written By: Kyle8TNu on 06/05/06 at 3:55 am

I was looking at Rolling Stone's List of their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and I noticed that there were not that many '90s Songs on there.  To my surprise, there were 3 songs on the list from the '00s.  Anyway, I filtered out the '90s songs from the list and i'll post them here

9  Smells Like Teen Spirit -  Nirvana  1991

36  One -  U2  1991

162  Nothing Compares 2 U -  Sinead O'Connor  1990

169  Losing My Religion -  R.E.M.  1991

200  Loser -  Beck  1994

256  Paranoid Android -  Radiohead  1997

259  Hallelujah -  Jeff Buckley  1994

286  Summer Babe -  Pavement  1992

331  I Can't Make You Love Me -  Bonnie Raitt  1991

346  California Love -  Tupac Shakur  1996

353  Tears in Heaven -  Eric Clapton  1992

376  Fake Plastic Trees -  Radiohead  1995

382  Bitter Sweet Symphony -  The Verve  1997

399  Enter Sandman -  Metallica  1991

406  I Believe I Can Fly -  R. Kelly  1996

407  In Bloom -  Nirvana  1991

419  Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang -  Dr. Dre  1993

445  Come As You Are -  Nirvana  1991

455  All Apologies -  Nirvana  1993

475  Sabotage -  Beastie Boys  1994

497  Buddy Holly -  Weezer  1994

I have to admit, I don't understand the appeal of "California Love" by Tupac.  How on earth does this song make the list?  The Beat in the song is kind of nice, but that shouldn't be good enough to get your song on this list  ???

I'm also surprised that "Loser" by Beck was High on the list.  But i'm glad to see "In Bloom" by Nirvana gettin' some love as the Second best Nirvana Song on the List

By the way, for those curious, the 3 Songs from the '00s that made the list were...

166  Lose Yourself -  Eminem  2002

180  Hey Ya! -  Outkast  2003

290  Stan -  Eminem  2000

The list just isn't credible. you cannot have a list like that and not have Guns N Roses on it. Yeah, one of their 80's song is probably in their Top 500, but November Rain should be on that list. Also, excluding Soundgarden is what really makes this list laughable. Three Nirvana songs, but no Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains?? Gimme a break.

Songs that should be on the list, IMO, (proving how boomer-biased and male-biased Rolling Stone is, IMO):

"Winter"-Tori Amos.
"Cloud on My Tongue"-Tori Amos.
"Hey Jupiter"-Tori Amos
"Stratford-on-Guy"-Liz Phair
"Soap Star Joe"-Liz Phair
"1969"-The Smashing Pumpkins
"Vogue"-Madonna.

As much as I love the 60s, the R.S. list was far too 60s-biased. So it's not really a credible comparison...

The list was compiled by people in the industry and it was based on chart position, sales, and overall longevity.  A lot of the songs you all wanted on this list haven't been around long enough, or haven't had good sales or haven't had decent chart position.  Overal influence of the band I believe was also taken into account.

Hence why you're going to have more older songs than current ones.  I admit it's subjective, but it's interesting to see where some industry people rank everything.

Actually, the song is called "1979"

And I agree that the list is terrible
