Subject: 90s Movies you (mistakenly) thought were made in the 80s

Written By: Trimac20 on 06/10/06 at 11:32 pm

When I was young I used to mistake alot of 90s movies for 80s movies (which were set in the 90s) due to the real retro feel of the urban landscape.etc. One movie which comes to mind is 'Muriel's Wedding', set in 1993, which is very 80s in terms of fashion.etc. 'Wayne's World' is also very late 80s. Which 90s movies 'look' 80s enough for you to mistake them?

Muriel's Wedding never looked '80s to me. There's actually a line in it that goes as such: "Muriel, it's the '90s now! You listen to '70s music! We listen to '90s music...Nirvana, etc." I always thought Rachel Griffiths' style in the movies was pretty '90s.

Yeah, I love that movie. It came out shortly after Sydney won the bid for the Olympics, and it's interesting to see 'Sydney 2000' advertiisng on cabs.etc. When can't help think of 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert' when thinking of that movie. They sort of go hand in hand.

I can see where you'd think it was late 80ish. However, I went to high school with burnouts like Wayne and Garth and yes they still existed in the early 90s  :-[.

Yes, 'Home Alone' is yet another example. Home Alone 2 (In New York) is decidedly 90s.

I felt like Mannequin 2: On the Move was an '80s movie when in fact I believe it came out in 1991.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  It came out in '90, but it definitely seemed late 80s.

I guess if you lived in Australian suburbiana in the late 80s/early to mid 90s, you'd notice the 'look' (the architecture, cars.etc) was still very 80s - I think the 80s definitely dragged on a bit longer here than in the U.S., as we didn't really have a huge 'Grunge backlash', or much of a Gangsta revolution. Another Australian movie which looks vaguely 80s (mainly the fashion and hairstyles, is 'The Castle', which was slightly more recent than 'Muriel's Wedding').

Yeah, my older brothers were "headbangers" in high school in the early '90s... They were born in '75 and '77.
