Subject: What magazines or designs scream 90s to you?

Written By: ChuckyG on 06/04/07 at 2:57 pm

I need to redesign the look of the 90s site (just started doing inthe70s.com over in a 70s feel), and I can't think of any design styles that really screamed 90s to me.

I am toying with the idea of coding the site to look like it was designed in 1995 or so, lots of centered text and "under construction" signs, etc. but even I have limits to how awful I want to make it look >grin<

Well it seems like 90s (or earlier) logos were very boxy and a little more plain than 00s logos.  Also thanks to the internet, a lot of new logos don't have capatalized letters.

Here is the 90s/earlier logo for Meijer--

Here is the new logo that they made for the 00s--

And also, pre-00s Burger King logo--

As for colors, neon and and some pastel colors tend to scream 90s to me.

You're right. They did seem a little more plain, which gave them character. Especially Burger King.

I'd also like to see some neon on the In the '90s site. I've been trying to create some neon text on the computer, but can't figure it out.

you guys are kidding right?  neon was an early 80s thing.. I was using it in the mid-90s to indicate the 80s.

While boxy cars and technology were more exclusive to the '80s, I think most '90s logos stuck with the older styles, so I think a good "snapshot" would have lots of '80s things around mixed in too. There was much less renovation and redesign of things back then, like there is with the more ultramodern '00s.

I believe Burger King got the circular blue logo in the late '90s, but I can't remember exactly.

I was thinking granite backgrounds, really glossy like, and maybe earth tones tend to be an early 90s flair to them.

Watch the music video for "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" by TLC and look at some of the text and colors they use in the video. That's if you want an early 90's look.

here are some images that I stumbled across that scream 90's to me:

Grafitti seemed to be a popular theme/background (reminds me of the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air)

bold colors... I think I understand why people were saying neon, even though those are what I usually associate with colors we used to call neon in the 80s.

hip hop was just exploding on Mtv, even though it had been around since the early 80s, so I guess that could be considered a bit 90s too.

I was noticing gradient fades began to be used in the late 80s (around 88 or 89) since that was something not easily done in the print world before computer layout became affordable.

You could also try an urban-ish or grunge-ish look.

The 90's seemed to be all over the place with pop culture.  :-\\

I think you're right.  It takes a little time for the old trends to "fade".

Not sure about the Burger King logo, but I remember still seeing the old one in like '98, so if it changed in the late 90s it was probably like the tail-end of it.

I guess it is... I generally think of cyan and magenta as being more 80s, but where that came out in 1989 I guess it was an early 90s thing too.
