Subject: Old School TVO Kids

Written By: star500 on 06/07/07 at 4:57 pm

Does anyone remember in the early days of the The Crawlspace on TVO? I remember when they first started in 1994. They had some really good shows on in the early days. Some of the really cool shows were:

Pingu
Eureeka's Castle
Polka Dot Shorts (I never liked Polka Dot Door much!)
Widget the World Watcher
Art Attack

And some other ones I probably can't even think of! If you know any other shows, please make your own list and add the ones I can't remember.

Also I miss the old hosts Patty and Joel and then before that Patty and Kevin.....now they keep changing hosts all the time and it sucks!!!

I grew up watching TVO.  'Polka Dot Door' was a show that was loved by kids in the 70s and 80s.  I even watched it when I was old enough that I shouldn't be watching it lol

other TVO shows I watched:

- The Edison Twins
- Belle and Sebastian
- Harriet's Magic Hats
- Today's Special
- Read All About It
- Readalong
- Fables of the Green Forest
- Eureka!
- Téléfrançais (I don't speak French at all, but I still watched this lol)

I know it's not TVO, but 3-2-1 Contact was cool too.

And it has a catchy song.

They don't make shows like that any more.

Reading Rainbow is really good too.

Remember 'Harrigan'?  "H-A Double R-I-G-A-N, it's Harrigan".  Barry Dale (who played Harrigan) was a local celebrity here where Harrigan was filmed.  Last year, I discovered it was broadacst across Canada.  I always thought it was a local show.  I met him once .. long after the show ended, he became owner of a local pizza place called 'Godfather's Pizza'.  I recognized him, did the Harrigan Dance, and he gave me 5 bucks lol

let me first say widget the world watcher i always had that purple charactor in my mind and could never remember what that show was so thank you for that tvo crawl space was the best childrends network
some other's were

-Magic school bus
-BOOK MICE ( one of my personal favorites with Leon)
and there was the cartoon with the spider and the two kids
then there was one cartoon with the real lanky girl

last two probably doesn't do any good but if I had to describe widget the world watcher I would have said the purple thing that can morph into anything haha so theres one off my list

Whoa.  It's amazing how far Bits and Bytes spread around.  When a presenter at the Vintage Computer Fest did a memorial in honor of the late Jim Butterfield in San Jose (3000 miles away from TV Ontario, because TVO was Ontario, Canada, not Ontario, California) last year, he aired a segment from Bits and Bytes, and everyone in the room recognized it.

Jeff Hyslop (Mannequin Jeff) played the original title role in the Canadian production of 'The Phantom of the Opera'.  I saw that in Toronto when I was in Grade 7, and I wish I could remember if it was him in the role at that time.  I always liked to watch him sing and dance on "Today's Special" :)

I think the show you're referring to is called Kitty Cats ("Pacha et les chats" in Quebec). The cats were named Ricky and Tango, the dog was Charlie, and the bird was Flap; Flap always brought presents back from his journeys. The cats lived in the house, and Charlie lived in the garden wall. There was also a hedgehog who was in a few episodes (I forget his name). This was my favourite show as a kid growing up on TVO Kids in the mid-1990s! Unfortunately the english version isn't on YouTube, but there's a french one:

The song is great to hear after all these years!

Book Mice was another favourite of mine... it's also on YouTube.

Does anyone remember Chicken Minute? It was about a Chicken Mama, a fox named Minute, an alligator named Anitole, and a swamp monster named Mudbelly all living in a Louisiana bayou. There was also a chick named Ulysses living in his shell.

it looked like a loft/studio type place.. they had a balcony with bushes on it... it was a group of people doing songs, arts/crafts, etc... every once in a while it would pan over to a shelf and there it was a toy wizard, his wife, and their dog... they'd have their minute of story and then it would zoom back out and resume the crafts... i cannot find this anywhere or maybe it's just because i cannot remember the name.. help....

The Crawlspace with Patty and Kevin!  Man, I watched that everyday after school.  It's what all the kids without cable watched! I remember most of the shows mentioned, including that space one with the rainbow-haired girl and some more:

-Wishbone
-Something weird thing where the theme song was like "Strange thing happen when you're going round the twist" or something...
-This weird math/science thing with a guy who may have had a ponytail... one episode was about Stonehenge...there may have been robots...
-this one where the episodes were based on stories that kids had sent in and there was a girl at a desk and "The Boss" behind some door

I also remember the one with the spider and the two kids.  Embarrassingly, I can still recall  some of the theme song. Listen to the song called "Reid's Situation" on this page: http://www.myspace.com/shadowymen .  Wasn't that the ending theme for the Crawlspace on Fridays?

it looked like a loft/studio type place.. they had a balcony with bushes on it... it was a group of people doing songs, arts/crafts, etc... every once in a while it would pan over to a shelf and there it was a toy wizard, his wife, and their dog... they'd have their minute of story and then it would zoom back out and resume the crafts... i cannot find this anywhere or maybe it's just because i cannot remember the name.. help....

Does anyone remember a show, I can't remember the name of it and I barely remember things from it but I distinctly remember the drawing style although I can't really find a way to describe it, but I remember there was a blue spider, and two kids I think?  I know this really isn't very distinctive but its all I can remember anything from it >__<

Incredible Sory Studio.... that sthe one with the boss on the door that always annoyed the host and theyd act out stories peiople sent  in

Does anyone know of the show I am talking about?: I'm pretty sure it was on TVO in the early 90's, and I cannot remember what it was called. There were two guys and a girl (adults), and they live in an apartment and I think they changed girls once and one of the guys' names might have been Zack. They had a shelf in their apartment and a little wizard doll and his wife lived on it and they had little segments on the show. There was an episode where the guy (Zack?) was doing sound effects over the phone with things around the apartment. They had some child friends from around the neighbourhood that were also in the show. This is all I can remember about the show and my mom remembers it too, but we just can't think of a name...

wow reading about all these shows makes me feel like I'm traveling through time. I'm remembering shows I had completely forgotten about but had loved so much as a kid.

there is however a show I'm trying to remember, and I'm 90% sure it played on TVO kids. I think it involved time travel or traveling to other worlds. The episode I remember the most was centered around this red haired girl who ended up in a world where the adults couldn't have any children so they wanted to keep her as their daughter. They were wearing clothes similar to 17th to 18th century France, wigs and all. I think they also had robot butlers. I remember that the girl managed to escape and I think she also had to save her brother or her friend?

does this strike a spark in anyone's memory?

I've been trying to years to remember this show:
Some spacey themed with "aliens" and the theme song started with:
"Sometimes there are some things that can't be explained. Time doesn't doesn't stand still and there's ... .... miracle happening right now. Give me a miracle now!"
I never watched the show but I loved the theme song. What's it called?

There was a show that I used to watch as a kid, must've been late 90s early 2000s. i cant remember the name though!!!

From what I remember, it featured 2 adults, a guy (in a jean jacket most of the time) and a girl, and they would do jobs and have little story outlines with them.

the three I remember the most are, the both of them driving a tractor containing a monster truck, the guy eating raisins in the cab and the truck breaks down. needing to get to a monster truck show, they remember they have a running monster truck in the back and use that to drive through the desert to get to the show. the truck hits a pipeline in the middle of nowhere and they walk the rest of the way.

- they do garbage duty, driving garbage trucks. the one bit i remember is it raining so much, that garbage cans ended up floating away in the flood like waters.

-and them driving a truck filled with VHS tapes. they load it up, then show how its unloaded using a fork lift. I recall at the end, he is talking to the camera, and opens the rear door of the truck. at that point, hundreds of VHS tapes start pouring out of the truck.

anyone have any clue what Im talking about?! hahaha thanks

Anyone ringing bells here? I have been trying to find what it's called for a really long time now :[

A show where you search for things and a squishy colorful potato comes, a show about a spoon, fork and other utensils that live in an ATV, and a show about a car that goes to a carwash and gets powers to solve mysteries. Please help, i have been looking for these shows for years, they were my childhood.

I'm trying to identify a cartoon I used to watch. I'm nearly 100% certain it aired on TVO Kids. It aired during the late 90's or early 2000's. It was about a detective who was an animal.

I remember 2 episodes, although there were certainly more. In the first episode, someone got mugged (the cartoon actually showed the mugging),and the villain was a Kangaroo (The detective found this out by looking at the tracks the mugger left. From the tracks, he could tell that the mugger was hopping), and I think the Kangaroo was named Captain Kangaroo (The one in the cartoon has nothing to with the Captain Kangaroo live action TV show).I remember the episode very well because the mugging scene gave me nightmares. In Episode 2, someone's apartment was trashed (I think it was while they were on vacation or while they were at a party). I don't remember this episode very well at all. I think the solution to the case had something to do with hibernation, but I'm not positive. I'm hoping that someone has also seen the cartoon and remembers it's name.

here's an obscure one for ya:

It's a british show, either on TVO or PBS about a young boy in the country with his dad (who was a farmer or something) the kid explores the forest near his farmhouse and meets this creepy green dude who can disappear at will. the little green dude (who's kinda like a miniature version of the creature from the black lagoon) tells him to stay away from some other evil creature (that looks like a big boulder)

i never found out why he had to stay away from the boulder, i just remember seeing a "tune in next time" bit at the end of a show where the boulder thing is dragging the father's horse away.

it's really starting to bug me lol probably aired in the early 90's

Could it be "Five Children And It"?

It could have been:

Five Children and It

Based on a 1900 children's novel, done in anime in the mid-80s, done in a 1991 BBC series called "The Sand Fairy", (with a 1993 sequel), and most recently done as a 2004 movie, "It" was the Psammead.

Wish-granting was a central part of the plot.  The timing is right, but the original poster should poke around to see if that stuff rings a bell.  I think you got it, robby76, but there were several spinoffs of the idea, and even if you didn't, one of the spinoffs might be the answer.
