I can't believe 1990 was 20 years ago.  First film I watched in today's decade was Ghostbusters, and I used to be obsessed with the cartoon and the movie all the time.  I was 5 at the time, but it really seemed like the early 90's was the real innocent time, as opposed to the cynical and dark tone from the rest of the 90's.

Subject: 1990 -- twenty years ago. What were you doing?

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 01/27/10 at 1:13 pm

If you're old enough to remember the first year of the 1990s, what was life like for you.  What do you remember?

I had dropped out of college and was working as a produce manager at a grocery store in Boston.  I lived in an apartment in a dumpy three-decker in East Boston.  I had a skinny little girlfriend named Cheryl and a big fat housemate named Mike.

I was reading a lot of Orwell, Huxley, and Jung.  Hard to understand Jung.  I was fascinated with surrealism and my room was festooned with cheap prints of Dali, Ernst, and De Chirico.  I bought them at the Harvard Coop.  I spent a lot of time in Harvard Square rifling through bookstores and record shops and eying girls.

I was done with the earrings, the Clockwork Orange makeup, and the punk haircuts.  I wore it in a crew cut.  I still had my black boots and my black leather jacket.  It was a bleak year for music.  I didn't like this new rubbish called Grunge.  Electronica/IDM was just getting started, and I wasn't aware of it yet.  I'd go to the clubs on Landsdowne Street but I found the Techno and dance pop vapid.  Artists I had loved in the '80s were either off the scene or putting out music I no longer felt any connection to, such was the case with Depeche Mode, New Order, and Sinead O'Connor.  I was listening to a lot of old Brian Eno records along with stuff like African Head Charge, Front 242, Tackhead, Einsturzene Neubauten, and Dub Syndicate.  I discovered Prokofiev from Morning Pro Musica and Thelonius Monk from Mike's record collection, but it would be a couple of years before I would discover the music that would inform my musical tastes for the rest of my life, such as Schoenberg, Babbitt, or Partch.

I was already beset with the clinical depression that would plague me for the rest of my days.  The illness manifested as listless malaise, anxiety, and occasional mind-blowing panic attacks.  I had yet to be treated with any pharmaceuticals, though I quit smoking pot because it provoked panic and paranoia.  Mike hit the bong every night, but neither Cheryl nor I touched the stuff.  I was fascinated with psychedelics and read Dr. Albert Hoffmann's LSD biography as well as Huxley's "Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell," but I eschewed those drugs because my own neurochemistry was already a bummer trip.  Frustrating.

I was a card-carrying communist that year.  I joined the Progressive Labor Party.  I joined in the meetings, the marches, the protests, and even some of the community activism, which sometimes involved going to scary places in Roxbury to administer petitions for this or that.  I found the PLP passionate in its convictions but retrograde in its methods.  They advocated violent overthrow of the United States government, but they seemed to be hoping the black people with the guns would do it for them.  As for the neurotic grad students and academics running the show in Boston, a band of fifth graders armed with snowballs could have dispatched the lot of them.  But the party gave me something to do besides lingering in cafes and cinemas or staring at the ceiling in my ramshackled apartment listening to NPR and burning incense.  I burned a lot of frankincense to ward off the musty miasma of that old dump.  The scent still reminds me of the place.

In December it all ended. I got canned from my job and the recession made getting another a grim prospect, especially without a college degree, and even then there were forty applicants for every opening.  Mike took a job working for the state of South Dakota and left me with an $1100 phone bill when he moved his fat ass out.  The phone company disconnected service.  My new housemate turned out to be a cocaine addict and petty criminal (later convicted of attempted murder).  It made Cheryl too nervous to want to hang around the place much.  The heat got shut off because I didn't pay the bill.  I knew nothing of low-income assistance, but I was on my way out anyway.  I moved back to my dad's in New Hampshire a few days before Christmas.  I told the slumlord and his real estate agent they could go f**k themselves for the rent, and just left.  The next year I remained unemployed, though my dad did fund a trip to Britain for me.  I went back to college in the fall of 1991.

February 2nd 1990 – Apartheid: F.W. de Klerk allows the African National Congress to function legally and promises to release Nelson Mandela.

And in my life, that was one day I remember quite well. It was a Friday, and probably one of the best days out of my whole 4th grade year.

My 4th grade class was studying the California missions, so we took a field trip to one of them; namely, the San Fernando Mission, since that's the one that was closest to the school. We ate our lunch at about 11 a.m. at the park across the street from it; and from there we went to the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, as the second part of our field trip. Got back to the school shortly before it ended for the day.

Later on...my family and I went to Chucke Cheeses to meet with a friend of mine and his family, and we had an awesome time there. I also kept running into this girl who I hadn't previously met, but she seemed pretty nice. I stood behind her in line to play Skeeball; she was next to me at one of the arcade machines...you name it, there she was. I figured she might've been one of those people I'd meet "one time only." She was about my then-age, which would now put her somewhere between 28 and 30.

Can't believe that was 20 years ago already. :o

Twenty years ago today, Mariah Carey wrote the first chapter in what has become one of the most exceptional Billboard chart discographies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcO7CTR7UAc

Carey's debut single, "Vision of Love," entered the Billboard Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Adult Contemporary in the issue dated June 2, 1990. The song would become her first of 18 Hot 100 No. 1s, the most among solo artists in the chart's 52-year history. Among all acts, only the Beatles, with 20, have more No. 1s.

June 15, 1990, was the last Friday of my 4th grade year (but not the last day; that was the following Thursday, the 21st). Even though that day at school was overall unpleasant for me (mainly due to my pain-in-the-wazoo teacher), it still sticks in my mind.

Details can be found in a thread I posted in 5 yrs ago, but I can explain some details right here anyways. The previous day, we started making these special kites from plastic straws, and in the process, I made a mistake that couldn't be corrected. I threw the straws in the trash because I had screwed up. So the teacher kept me in at recess on the 15th and told me to go get my straws. I firmly refused, for two reasons: 1) I figured that they wouldn't be there, since the trash was most likely emptied by the custodian after everyone went home, and 2) why would I wanna dig something out of the trash in the first place? EEEUUUWW! :P 8-P I don't remember exactly what happened after that, but I am sure it was NOT pleasant. I think she made me write a note (which I never did deliver). I just know that at 2:30pm, when school was out, I was glad to escape.

I made a bet with a girl and won, and that night we went out (mid June 1990, can't recall the exact day) she got so totally drunk and fell asleep on me in the subway. One of the weirdest nights of my life which could have been a life changing event, I can't get into it right now.

I had less than 2 hours of sleep that night and went into work the next day, so did the girl.

That's right... it lasted 11 years on the air and was one of the most watched programs in television history. One character from that show, Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer) went on to a spinoff sitcom entitled Frasier, which premiered in the fall of that year and would last for equally as many seasons as its predecessor.

What do you mean by "year-round"?

Starting in the second-to-last week of August, having a 2-month winter break, going back on the day after Presidents Day, having not much of a spring-break, and going all the way to the end of June. So the winter break was longer than the summer break.

Other schools in the district had tracks that started in July or early August, and then taking breaks in October or November.

And while the schedule was done away with in 1993, some schools re-adopted it in later years due to the overcrowding...including one elementary school that I worked at for two summers (1996 and 1997).

This schedule was in effect for two years (1991-92 and 1992-93) in the L.A. Unified School District... and for both years, during the long winter break, I enrolled in winter inter-session classes, just so I'd be learning something during that long period of time. In fact, during January of the second year (1993), when I was in the 7th grade, I took a computers class and a Spanish class. I might have mentioned something about those in prior replies on this thread.

Edit: yup... in replies #354 and 362.

I do recall seeing it on television news, but I do not remember if it was live or not.

For the most part, probably not; it happened during the early evening hours in California, so that was probably the "graveyard shift" hours in your time zone. I remember it was shortly after 8 p.m. PDT when O.J. arrived at his home, and that would be 4 a.m. (Saturday morning) your time.

I also know that I began watching it shortly after 7pm my time; we were having a party at home to celebrate my graduation from middle school, and one of my guests told me that the chase was happening live (he must've been aware of it), so I turned on the TV, and the rest is history.

OJ had apparently been expected to "turn himself in" at 11 in the morning, local time, at a local police station, where a multitude of reporters were waiting for hours...but he never showed. It wasn't until shortly after 6 p.m. PDT that O.J. was spotted (in his Ford Bronco) on a freeway in Orange County. Not too long after that, the cops began chasing him. The chase ended at approximately 8pm, as mentioned above, at his Brentwood home, taking a very long time before finally surrendering to the police, who were out there waiting for him.

Oddly, given the fact that I was only in grade school at the time, I also remember watching this live on television. It was a Friday, so I was spending the night over at my grandparents house. I remember walking into the living room that evening and having my grandfather tell me that O.J. Simpson was being chased by the police.

Of course, given how young I was at the time, I didn't know who the hell O.J. Simpson even was. In fact, I distinctly remember wondering if he might somehow be Bart and Lisa's brother-from-another-mother. ;D

August 12, 1994: A baseball strike began, wiping out all the remaining scheduled games of the regular season from that day forward, as well as the postseason. :( The strike would continue into early 1995 before finally getting matters resolved.

Had there been no strike, the Montreal Expos may very well have reached the playoffs for the first time since 1981, since they had MLB's best record when the stoppage began; who knows, they might have even seen the World Series. (Still, to this date, the franchise is the only one in the NL that has never reached the World Series, even after becoming the Washington Nationals in 2005.)

Where I work, I received a special message from the Secretary of Transportation:

While DOT employees are often called upon to respond to the scene of tragedies that strike our Nation’s transportation system, we never expect that tragedy will find us in our offices. But that is what happened on April 19, 1995, when a terrorist’s bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.  Among the 168 victims were 8 employees of the Federal Highway Administration, and 3 from what is now known as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of their deaths. Please join me in remembering all of those who were killed, including our fallen colleagues:  Lucio Aleman, Jr., Mark A. Bolte, Michael J. Carrillo, Larry J. Jones, James K. Martin, Jerry L. Parker, Michelle A. Reeder, Rick L. Tomlin, Johnny A. Wade, Ronota A. Woodbridge, and John A. Youngblood.  Though it has been two decades since they died, their families and friends still feel the loss of their loved ones every day.

In away given that the OJ Simpson trail was ongoing and even though we had the first WTC attack in 1993, this provided a much larger death toll and although some security was enhanced, really was the transition toward a much more secure society we had today that climaxed with 9/11.

I also got the game for the SNES. Its a shame though that they could have skipped the opening Season 3 arc of the TV show since those weren't really necessary and in reality creates canon discontinuity. Of course you can't deny how old school the production feels compared to movies of the 21st century, but that's part of my lure of movies when they age.

Also on August 10, 1995: The Los Angeles Dodgers gave out baseballs to paying customers as they entered the Dodger Stadium gates for a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. However, fans interrupted the game in the seventh inning when they threw these baseballs onto the field. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals were leading the game 2-1. The first batter, Raul Mondesi, was called out on strikes and then ejected by home plate umpire Jim Quick for arguing, as was Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda moments later. Dodger fans, fueled by a series of close calls and a few rounds of alcohol, again threw their souvenir baseballs onto the field. The Cardinals left the field due to safety concerns and the field was cleaned up so play could resume. However, when the Cardinals returned to the field, at least one ball sailed out of the center field bleachers and the umpires immediately forfeited the game to St. Louis. As a result of this incident, Major League Baseball decreed that for any future promotional giveaways of baseballs or any other throwable object, the items would be given out as fans exited the stadium.

This was the most recent forfeiting of a game in Major League Baseball.

Not too long after that, Weird Al would parody the song as "Amish Paradise", which Coolio was apparently unhappy about, but the two singers have since made amends (although it would take several years to do so).
