Subject: 1990

I was only seven-years old in 1990. Surprisingly though, I have many memories of the opening year of the '90s. Today 1990 is already twenty years ago (hard to believe) and it has a very nostalgic glow for me. But even by the late '90s I can remember 1990 already seeming very old school because styles and music had changed so much over the course of the decade. Some of the things I remember from that year: having a birthday party outside my old trailer when I turned seven. There are pictures of my cousins and me hitting the pinata, playing chairs, my birthday cake with a Ninja Turtle turtle on it. There are also pics of my toddler cousins who are now in their early twenties. That was the year my maternal grandfather died of cancer. I can remember going to his house and him appearing very frail, ill, and not speaking much. However, I never knew him that well and don't remember being very sad at his passing. I remember going trick-or-treating for Halloween as Bart Simpson and in December my family and me going to Florida for my half sister's wedding. While we were there we went to Disneyworld and Universal Studios. There is one picture in particular from that vacation that is VINTAGE early '90s. My sister (then 15) and me standing in the Disney parking lot. My sister has curly hair and is wearing ripped jeans and an M.C. Hammer t-shirt.
As far as music, I don't remember any of the songs from that year. But there are a lot songs from 1990 that I do like: "Close To You" by Maxi Priest, "Groove is in the heart" by DeeLite, "Poison" by Bell Biv Devoe, and "Around the Way Girl" by LL Cool J are good songs in my opinion. My TV viewing that year consisted of Tiny Toon Adventures, Tale Spin, Ducktales, Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers, The Muppet Babies, The Cosby Show, In Living Color, early episodes of The Simpsons. I was a HUGE TMNT fan that year and went to see the movie in theaters when it came out in spring. I also had the comic and cassette that Pizza Hut was giving away. I also was going through a big dinosaur craze at that age and for Christmas I got some dinosaur pop-up books. I remember watching a documentary on dinosaurs on TV and being mad that they did not show any live-action dinosaurs, just fossils and drawings. This was a few years before the movie Jurassic Park came out. I also remember going to see Home Alone in theaters. Altogether, a year with lots of good memories.

I was finishing pre-school and was entering kindengarden. Had loads of fun through travelling from Tampa to Miami often. I was also in the school play for the winter 1990 playing one of the elves for Santa Claus(Oh innocent times.....). My brother was 11, and we used to watch him play Baseball in those little league games.
I remember when we used to still use rotary phones, lol. Also, we also didn't have the remote for the tv, so we had to change the channel manually. Luckly, we didn't have cable, so there was only 8 channels to switch too. We had NES to play with, which was a complete bitch since we had to clean it up all the time with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol.
As TV watching goes, I used to watch Ducktales(remember the movie?), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostubers, The Muppet Babies, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Alf, and a bunch of Knight Rider reuns. We used to joke whenever we get in the car by saying "Cruise Control, KITT" :)
I was very into MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice(who didn't know the songs to that lyrics then?), Stevie Ray Vaughn, Paula Abdul, Madonna, Michael Jackson, etc...A lot of what was played on the radio was from the 80's and they weren't considered old yet.
You are right about 1990 being really oldschool. I really don't think the early 90's, or at leastbefore 1992, should be included in the 90's because it still had that good time feel to it. When I think of the 90's, I think of angst-ridden music, crimes and riots, crash-TV, start of increasing swearing, sex, and vulgarity on tv(like Jerry Springer), political corrrectness, first signs of tv ratings etc...pop culture then was not like that then.

1990 isn't that big of a year for me. I was ten years old, 4th/5th grade. I remember my sister who was 14 at the time was acting out a lot and she was sent away, I spent a lot of time with my parents that summer. And I went on vacation with just the two of them, where we were almost flooded in.

My memories of that year aren't all that clear...I turned 6 and started the 1st grade.
I remember it was still fashionable for men to wear those tightish light denim dad jeans and tuck their t shirts in...along with those white sneakers that are now popular in old folks homes
you saw a lot of neon bathing suits back then. Looking at pictures of me as a kid at the jersey shore my mom and sis had this weird pink neon swim wear, and big hair as a holdover from the 80's. Big hair was def still a thing back then but fading.
Gulf War was big that year, there was a major resurgence in patriotism.
It was a very big year for movies with now legendary films Home Alone, Ghost, Dances with Wolves, Pretty Woman coming out.
Some interesting things happened, but for the most part it was sort of a transitional year. The 80's were over but they weren't dead and buried yet until the musical/pop culture revolution the following autumn with the breakout of grunge.
1990 and 1999 seem polar opposites. Like they could be 25 years apart. But it's not the first time that's happened. 1960 and 1969 are the same way

My family was still together. My mom got pregnant in May that year. I remember my parents being "hush hush" about it.
We went to Edaville Railroad that December on the way to visit my grandfather in Wakefield,MA.
I distinctly remember Christmas of 1990. I got a Brio train set.

Aw come on now they weren't THAT different in the same way 1962 is from 1969, all that happened was the more outrageous '80s fashions gradually disappeared and music became more splintered, the '90s is just a toned down, minimalist version of the '80s(especially in terms of fashion). The biggest divider between 1990 and 1999 is definitely the internet but stylistically the '90s didn't bring much at all.
I consider the '80s and '90s(and the earlier '00s) to be part of the same era, the same way the '60s and '70s are part of the same era.
