You were born in '99? :o Suddenly I feel really old, haha. :P But let's see if I can answer your question... I believe (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) people who were born between 1990 and 1995 are part of Generation Y and people born after 1995 (like you) are part of Generation Z. But I just want to point out that not everyone who was born in the 90s is a 90s kid (some say people born in the early 90s are, while some others don't so it's debatable). However, most people born in the 90s are considered to be 00s kids (you're a 90's baby and a 00s kid).

I don't know if this even answers your question. :-\\

Generation Y (I prefer Millennial Generation but that's not so popular) is said to have started in 1982, I think 1982 is still a little early. I was born in 93 and only recall memories of very late 90's. Since you born in 1999 you are probably apart of the generation after Gen Y. But it's all up to debate. If you look around the web the next generation after Y, starts as early as the early 90's and as late as mid-2000's.

My thoughts are anyone who can really remember what life was like before 9/11 is apart of Generation Y and people who can't really well are apart of the generation that follows. Being born in 93 I was around 8 when 9/11 happened but growing up after 9/11 now, I could never picture not having strict security at airports and not being considered with terroism and the middle east. That all seems very normal to me, so I think many people born in the 90's are apart of a different generation than Y. But like I said it's all up to debate.

Funny how I only wanted to write a few sentences and came away with a long probably annyoing speech.  ;D

It might seem earlier to you, but I say those who weren't in the job force before the Internet revolution happened are part of Y.  This probably makes it start around 1977-1978.  As for the end, I'd end it in 1998, because they would be 3 in 9/11, so they might have a feel of what was the world like before it.

Seeing as most of them have no recollection of the 20th Century, the most fitting term for them is "Millennials". It kinda rolls off the tongue better than "Millennial Generation", JT, so I hope you like it.
Frankly, I'm annoyed by the fact that 90's teens are still called Generation X. It's been 15 to 20 years, and they STILL don't have their own identity? At least children of the 80's like me are now considered the "New Wavers" or "Hi-Techs" or something cool.

I was born in november of 1991 so i did live through most of the 90s. I have memories of the late 90s like 1998 and 1999, but i consider myself an 00s kid. I mean im graduating high school on friday and it is the year 2010. When you think about it, the 00s is when i was in school, went through puberty and adolescence, and so on. So i would not consider anyone born in the 90s a 90s kid

In my opinion, you can't claim the 90s if you weren't in at least 8th grade when the new millennium hit.  Teens of today who try to claim the '90s as their decade sound so foolish because there culture and mindset is so unmistakably '00s.

Well, I for one definitely do not "claim" the 90's as my decade. To be honest, I don't really claim anything as my decade. I personally believe people who are true 90's kids are those who experienced the entire decade (people born in the 80's), something that even the oldest people born in the 90's wouldn't have been able to do since they mostly experienced the mid/late 90's. Just my opinion. 8)

Are you aware though that some people remember as far as their birth? I was only a few months old when I travelled overseas and I can fully remember it, that was in 91. To be honest I think people should be called the kids of the decade they were born in. Kids who were born in the 90s don't like to be called 00s kids, we're incredibly loyal to the decade we were born in. I can honestly say that the 90s was the best time in my life! All the carefree days of being a child where the only thing we had to worry about was ... well, nothing lol. All the memories. Childhood memories and the experiences you had as a child, they're completely priceless! All my memories/experiences go as far back as 91 so I don't think it's fair to say we only remember anything past the mid of the decade. :D Just my opinion x

Yeah, I'm aware that some people can remember from before they were 3 or 4. I never said that I wasn't. I have a good memory myself, but not as good as yours. That's pretty cool that you can remember that far back. :) But in my opinion, being a 90's kid is more than remembering memories here and there. It's also about experiencing the culture of the decade in its entirety, meaning a true 90's kid would be able to remember experiencing the culture of the early 90's as well as the mid and late 90's. That's just me. 8)

Starde: Haha yeah well when I said childhood memories are priceless I meant that the popculture makes up part of those memories. I don't just mean memories of playing and your friends and christmas and stuff, I mean the 90s culture like the fashion, toys, snack foods, the tv, movies, music etc etc etc like well they are part of what makes your memories so special and priceless the culture was essentially what made our childhood the way it was ... I could experience and have memories of my friends and christmas other holidays and stuff etc etc from any decade any year basically I will be able to experience it whenever I wish hence why it won't be as special as the culture you experienced during your childhood. Childhood can never be repeated; we'll never truly exerience the magic of the fashion/music/toys&games/specific foods that we can't get now; childhood memories just wouldn't be the same without the culture... lol sorry I know I ramble a lot haha basically I'm saying I agree with you...  :) :) :)

technically speaking i am belong to both 90s kid and 00s kid because my childhood spans between those 2 decades (childhood years according to my opinion is between 4.5 to 12 years old  :P) i am a 5 year old kid back in 1999 and it was i think the best year for me... everything was carefree and just simply fun culture....

i was a baby back in the 90s and also a kid :P

and technically speaking generation Y spans from 1981-1994... 1995 onwards is generation Z

i guess to differentiate between gen Y and gen Z is to tell whether u remember watching 9/11 on tv and i know i remember it back when i was 7 years old

it's a turning point in the world history i believe....

and isn't definition kids are for anyone under 14 ;)

This same debate has been raging on the internet in the last few months. Go to any video related to the 90's on YouTube and your bound to see hundreds of comments debating what exactly defines a "90's kid".

I think that you have to treat being a "kid" of a decade as a completely different thing than being a "teen" of a decade because both experiences are totally different. For the last several decades, children have had tv shows, channels, and even music that is marketed entirely toward them, which means that you can experience a decade as a kid and have nostalgia for completely different things from that decade than someone, say, ten years older than you that lived through it as a teenager.

For example, I was born in 1987, and while I was obviously not a '90s teen, I wouldn't consider myself to be an '00s kid either, even though I didn't graduate high school until 2005. An '00s kid, in my opinion at least, would be someone who was young enough to have watched and enjoyed shows like Hannah Montana or something along those lines that is geared toward younger audiences.

I was born in 1993. And while I'd like to say I was a 90's kid, I was 7 by the time 2000 came around so obviously I'm more of a 2000's kid, but I was a kid in the early 2000's and became a teen in the late 2000's, and I never liked the culture of the late 2000's except for some things recently. The weird thing is a lot of teens around my age all seem to like a lot of things from the 90's even thought most of us can only remember some things from the late 90's.

It was a same situation ten years ago about people my age.  I was born in 1985, and was a kid in the early 90s and a teen in the late 90s, and a lot of people were talking crap on how the 90s sucked and was devoid of culture.  Most of them liked the 80s, despite knowing very little of the culture itself.  I think those born around a '2-'5 area have similiar feelings about the culture of the next decade after they were born.

I can't say I hated the 00s, because I enjoyed the early 00s a lot.  I didn't care for the rest of the decade, because I was out of the house and was trying to make(while going through college).  I had some bad experiences there, but I wouldn't wish them to go away, as I learned a lot from it.

I can see why some people would call me a 90s kid as i remember watching cartoons and being a little kid back then, but i did not experience that pop culuture of that era. I hardly remember the 90s much at all except early elementary school. When 911 came a couple months before i turned 10 is when my life really began to change. I was sitting in my 4th grade classroom when i heard the news and i panicked. And IMO generation Y is 1981 to 1994 as many have suggested. I was on wikipedia reading about the generations and they consider (in recent history):

Greatest: 1915-1926
Silent: 1927-1945
Boomers: 1946-1953
Jones: 1954-1965
Gen X: 1965-1980
Gen Y: 1981-1994
Gen Z: 1995-2010

Had I been born in 1981 i would have considered myself a 90s kid. Your decade is when you were in high school and expierenced pop culture IMO. I know nothin of 90s pop culture, even though I was alive through it all. Late 00s is what im most familiar with, no matter how bad of pop culture it is.

I find it interesting how people always seem to have a different definition for what classifies someone as a kid. Some people refer to phrase "__ kid" meaning:

*someone who spent most of their childhood years (around ages 3/4 to 12) in the decade
*someone who spent most of their teenage years (13-18/19) in the decade ("growing up in a decade")

But technically, aren't you also growing up between the ages of 3/4-12 as well? Ah, so many opinions! :D No wonder there isn't a rulebook written in stone. :P

It's called the free exchange of ideas.

And JFTR, I was born in 1974, but I certainly don't consider myself a Gen-Xer! Besides. Generation X was meant to be a placeholder until a more fitting name was realized, and now have people become so lazy that they're calling those that come after them Generations Y and Z!? Come on, where are we supposed to go after that? >:(

I like the idea of children born in the 90's and who grew up in the 00's being called "The Millennials", and since I grew up in the 80's and early 90's, the dawn of the computerization of our society, I've heard us called "The Hi-Techs", which is a title I gladly accept. ;D. So here you go:

Greatest: 1915-1926
Silent: 1927-1945
Boomers: 1946-1953
Jones: 1954-1965
Hi-Techs: 1965-1980
Millennials: 1981-1994
1995-2010 ??? (Too soon to be labeled.)

I remember in the 90s, Generation X was synonyms of Grunge and Grungers.  By that case, it would mean that only those born in 1976-1980 are Gen Xers.  But then again, the word had been used so much, even those born in the early-mid 80s can claim as such, just like this music video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE9CXWV1alg

That being said, I wouldn't put too much stock on those terminologies.  They are used for marketing purposes only imo.
