It was the first truly bizarre tv show...(in the modern Heroes or LOST plot sense). Twilight zone was strange but each episode was contained to one hour. Twin Peaks just kept twisting that plot each week...

What I loved about the show, was that it was damn freaky!

;D

I found a website that outlined so many references
to "TWINS" in that show, I couldn't believe that
I missed much of the underlying theme.

Twin Peaks introduced me to David Lynch  ;)

I've since watch many of his movies like...
Eraserhead
Mulholland Dr.
Inland Empire
Lost Highway
etc...

very "out there"

Don't forget "Blue Velvet," which is Lynch's masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.  "Eraserhead" is a wonderful movie, but it is very hard for people to understand.  A lot of folks just don't have the patience for it.

The first couple of seasons of Twin Peaks were wonderful, but then Lynch dropped out of it.  Furthermore, I didn't have my own TV then.  There was a TV in the apartment, but it belonged to Mike, the fat man with bong, and he was in charge of programming!

Lynch got too obsessed with redneck villains and lipstick lesbians.  By the time he made "Wild at Heart," he was finished.
