Subject: Recommendations Needed: Some good cultural history books about the 1990s

Written By: Ryan112390 on 08/06/10 at 5:48 pm

Hey,

Could someone recommend some books concerning the socio-political climate, the 90s Generation Gap (between Gen X and the Boomers), and the general pop culture and history of the 1990s in the US?

Not sure if enough time has passed.  I don't know of any.

There are some specialized books on various topics; just search "1990s" on a book search engine; a few have been published. As the '90s are still a recent decade, growth in books about that decade will appear in years (and decades) down the road. For instance, books about the "Gay Nineties" (1890s) were mainly published between the mid-1920s and early 1950s. Of course, some stuff online, such as some old message board posts on BBS systems from the '90s can be used to assess what life is like at the time. But for now the sections on the 1990s on Wikipedia (likely written by people witnessed the '90s first hand) seems to be the best place, depending on the subject. But be patient if you want the '90s in print; you may notice that new books about cultural history from previous decades continue to be released (for example a book about the '70s disco scene just came out).
