Subject: When/why did the mullet go out of style?

Written By: Ryan112390 on 06/25/11 at 2:26 pm

For those who remember and were teens/adults in the 90s, around when (like what year) do you recall the mullet truly going out of style--not simply going out of style but becoming the haircut that's mocked more than perhaps any other?

I can't remember the exact year, but before the middle of the 90's that look was out of style. That is one hairstyle that should never come back in style. It was so bad.

Yes why.  Why did the mullet go out of style?

BECAUSE IT WAS STUPID

Anyone who has a mullet, lives in a trailer park, has a beard, wears checkered shirts with no sleeves and says words like "Y'all" and "Git".  And if anyone here still has a mullet and is offended by this, I am not going to apologize, because well come on.  You know it's true, and if you can't face that, well then that's just sad.

It's 2011; If you still have a mullet, I want to toss empty beer cans at you :D

This guy I work with, who's a nice guy but a complete airhead, had a mullet until about 3-4 months ago. I used to break his balls quite a bit about it and ask him repeatedly when he was going to cut his mullet off.

Now I keep asking him when he's gonna grow it back.  ;D ;D ;D

I think it's overly stereotyped....
My dad wore one from around '89 to '96 and he was no country boy or hillbilly or or said ya'll or the like. He was a professional with a Bachelor's Degree working in New York City and simply used to wear it in a ponytail at work. I guess that's why I've never gotten the "Mullet = Uneducated sleazy redneck" connotation.

I will say the mid 90s because the early 90s still have some 80s influence and people like Bill Ray Cyrus (Acky Breaky Heart) was sporting that mullet in 1992.

Why, it's because it's out of style, and in the mid 90s, no one was wear mullets.

If you read whistledog's post properly you'll see he was talking about people who still have mullets.  Yes it was trendy, but now it isn't yet people still wear this style

When did mullets go out of style?  When did they start calling them "mullets"?  That's when mullets went out of style.

Why?  As I remember it, in the early '80s college kids thought they were being cool by wearing it long on top and short on the sides and back.  Then came "Miami Vice" and all the Tony Yahoos at the mall started wearing the Don Johnson look.  College hipster backed away from it.

By the early 1990s the so-called mullet was strictly for bumpkins.  Dave Gahan insists on wearing one, but he's kind of a bumpkin at heart!

I think it was getting kind of rare in the mid 90's. It was very rare in the late 90's. I also think the mullet jokes started in the late 90's. I didn't even know what the word meant until somewhere around 2000-2002.

I'd say around the mid '90s, by the late '90s and into the early '00s the short hair clean cut look was in.
