Subject: When Teen Pop took over in mid 1997 what did you think??????

What were you're  initial impressions when grunge started fading and the likes of Spice Girls & Backstreet boys started hitting the airwaves in may of 1997?

From what I remember, it was not that abrupt and it was rather a smooth transition which you don't notice that much when it's the actual time. It's not that the 'old' genre was not played anymore on the radio and teen pop was everything from one day to another.

Backstreet Boys was a bit earlier BTW.

Agreed.  I wouldn't say teen pop really "took over" until around 99 with Britney Spears and NSYNC.  97/98 was more of the "pop rock" era with groups like Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Everclear, Sugar Ray, etc.

Anyways, what did I think when teen pop took over?  Even as an 11/12 year old, I though it was manufactured and lacked creative value.

the spears trade mark pops and claps and percussion

Yes! it was. Dance music in 1997 was at its best. I miss that sound and wish music still sounded like that.

Yes.  I started getting into music a couple years before teen pop became dominant.  Stuff like Smashmouth, The Offspring, Fastball, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Everclear, Sugar Ray, etc.  Teen pop seemed fake and cheesey in comparison.

I can see some traces of mid 90s culture looking back at 97, but I don't know about early; the early 90s were already pretty dated even by 97, especailly very early 90s stuff like Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, and the tail end of hair metal.

Yes, that's true. It's not that everything changed harshly when Jan 1st, 1997 began. When I was living during that time I couldn't even distinguish between then and maybe 4 years earlier (on a superficial base) because the early-mid 90's still felt so recent. Of course, there were a lot of inventions during that year, but the older stuff did not disappear instantly.

I'm starting to think that the 90's are very, and I mean VERY overrated when it comes to (pop) music. Even grunge is way overrated. I'm glad that I grew up on 80's music in the 90's and completely ignored the ghastly sounds of music then. In 2001-2 music became cool again and started sounding more mature, more urban/punk-like.

Ha ha, I love that movie too.

I like all of them as well but I favored Posh and Baby back in the day. Although, Posh is ridiculously skinny nowadays and does not look as healthy as she used to in the 90's.

Scary had one of the best singing voices out of the group in my opinion.

A reason why teen pop took over in 97  well another added reason was because producers were sick of the dark change in depressing music from 92-97  so they decided to start assembling pop groups to take over

Btw, teen pop did not take over in 1997.  There were a lot of other musical genres around like Lilith fair type music, electronica, alternative, post grunge, r&b, etc. That type of music was a small part of the musical spectrum of the time.

From what I remember, 1997 was still classic 90s, 1998 was sort of half and half (boybands and nu metal start creeping in but not huge yet), 1999 felt like a whole different decade. At the time I liked the teen pop explosion, it was very partyish and was a blast when played at the roller skating rink I always used to go to.

That's what I am saying. '99 was the beginning of the '00's and therefore I find it wrong that some (especially later 90's born people) say they are 90's kids, just because there was so much 90's culture in the early 2000s. I mean - the early 2000's were different to the 'smartphone 00's' but they weren't very 90's either.

When Teen Pop took over it just seemed like an happier era for kids like me to be honest, all I remember from Teen Pop is hot summers really. Late 90's was what the 00's should have been, but for some reason it just changed after like 2004 or 2006, in 2007 I felt like music had a dark feeling to it and I just remember winter from 2007. Since then I haven't liked much.

I liked the teen pop movement, which was probably rare for a male such as myself. I was barely a preteen in 1997, so I didn't have that many memories of the music scene before the teen pop influx. I was definitely the right age for the TRL-era, which was a huge contributor in making these artists popular. As far as the Spice Girls went, I had a hard time figuring out which one I was crushing on the most, Baby or Posh. To me, they were more of a precursor to the teen pop era though, as they kinda fizzled out in the US after Ginger jumped ship. It was closer to 1999-2000 when a whole glut of other performers started coming into the fold.

Yeah I agree. A lot of the stuff that was big on the charts in 1999 like Sugar Ray, Lenny Kravitz, Goo Goo Dolls, Savage Garden, TLC etc. still feels pretty 90s. None of that stuff carried over too far into the 2000s, by late 2002 or so that stuff had all been phased out. People remember the 2000s sounding exceptions from the late 90s like Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears, but that stuff was only a sliver of what was popular at the time.

All those bands you listed were alot of 1997-1998 things left in 1999, but overall 1999 was already starting the millenial times, it was as if the baby boomer exectives were sick of Gen X already and gave them the boot when the clock struck 12 midnight. LOL.  If I had to choose when I felt a pop culture shift it's when Britney Spears came out, rather than Spice Girls.

Like i said before producers hated the whole grunge gen x slacker  music  so A change was needed.  Also  y2k also played into 1999 getting a huge push of bubblegum pop because 1999 was so close to 2000.  1999 is when Dreamcast came out as well. 1999 was like like a high tech year that is still old school. For instance if you were to go to a movie  or mall  it would still have the early 90s late 80s  neon signs  , obv they couldnt change the appreance of a mall that fast.  Thats the reason why you saw stores get make overs in 2003 and 2002. Thats why stores like Service Merchandise got a new logo.

There was a shift, but it wasn't overnight. I'd agree that the transition away from 90s culture really got going in 1999, but it wasn't close to complete yet and 1999 still feels a lot different from almost all of the 00s, especially from after 9/11.

Don't know exactly for the US, but in Germany/Europe it is the case. Even the 80's are played quite often.

However I have read somewhere over here, that there are stations in the US who do so, too.

Where I am the rock stations pretty much only play 80s and 90s hits now, with maybe a little bit of early 00s. Seems there are almost no new rock artists if you were judging by the radio alone. Could be that the radio stations feel like the listening demographic is primarily older people so they play songs that they would recognize. I think most in my generation kind of treat the radio as being on the way out.

I don't think the change was as big as some make it out to be. The '90s are perceived to be a "darker" decade than the '80s (and of course in some ways they were), but that doesn't mean that all music was all angsty and serious between 1991 and 1996. How about The Macarena, MMMBop, and The Sign? All those songs were huge hits before 1997. Take That was pretty popular in the mid '90s too.

Also, remember that the "Grunge era" was essentially over after 1994. Most of the rock bands popular in 1995 (Pop-Punk like Green Day and The Offspring; Post Grunge like Bush and Foo Fighters) either were still popular in the late '90s, or were not that different from most of the other groups that were. Nu Metal is the outlier of course, but even that was an offshoot of earlier '90s bands like Rage Against The Machine.

The "Teen Pop era" is unique as it representions the period where the rate of Internet growth was the fastest. When the era began, the Internet was only recently a household world, and the "wave of the future". By the time the teen pop era ended in 2002, the Internet had become a standard daily fixture nearly everywhere. It also coincided with the Pokemon craze; that show's theme songs for the first few seasons definitely have a Teen Pop-esque feel to them. It's quite funny that my puberty/adolescence coincided with digital puberty. This was also the peak of the CD era; with cassettes in cars finally fading around this time and before digital downloading became common around 2003. Believe it or not, I even have a few Teen Pop songs on a 45 as they was still a small niche industry left for jukebox operators at bars for those who hadn't switched yet to a CD jukebox. It's quite fitting that N'Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" sort of unoficially ends this era. The rise of American Idol may have also contributed as well to its demise.

In a way, there were really three waves of Teen Pop:
Wave 1 (late 1996-1997 artists): The Spice Girls, Hanson, Backstreet Boys
Wave 2 (1998-early 1999 artists): N'Sync, 98 Degrees, All Saints, Five, O-Town Next, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera (the last two started with Teen Pop, then matured later on)
Wave 3 (late 1999-2000 artists): A* Teens, Westlife, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson

Keep in mind that there was also a Latin Pop movement during Wave 3(Jennifer Lopez, Santana's "smooth album", Enrique Iglesias) as well, which is why I sort of view 1998 as the "big year" for the Teen Pop movement, 1999 was sort of Latino Pop's "big year", though it was the big year for Teen Pop's solo acts, mainly female. 2000 was sort of a watered down 1999, with Teen Pop still around, though it was mostly just holding its formula and established stars by that point. 2001 was a sign that the era was on the way out with no big new acts forming.

I really see 1996 through to the end of 1998 as the time before teen pop became popular.  MTV was still playing alot of hip-hop, R&B, and alternative during those years.  I really don't think teen pop exploded until the end of 1998 - 1999.

It's odd. I remember hearing new rock songs on the radio up through the late 00s. However, most of the rock radio stations I listen to are Canadian because I am in close proximity to Canada.

Well for the us it was 1997, Hanson and Spice girls  along with bsb really jump kicked the teen pop movement into overdrive.I think 1997 is also  the year  gen Y first started getting into music . I really didnt understand why many moms didnt want their kids listening to mtv in the mids 90s at the time.  its funny though as soon as teen pop took off moms were like HEY LETS PUT ON RADIO DISNEY !

Examples of some music from 1997, which were played on MTV and on the radio at the time:

Missy Elliot "The Rain" Supa Dupa Fly
Foo Fighters "Everlong"
Sarah McLachlan "Building a Mystery"
Mariah Carey "Honey"
Usher "You Make Me Wanna"
Fiona Apple "Criminal"
Jamiroquai "Virtual Insanity"
Meredith Brooks "Bitch"
Jewel "You Were Meant for Me"
Notorious Big "Hypnotize"
Paul Cole "Where Have all The Cowboys Gone"
Third Eye Blind "Semi Charmed Life"
Squirrel Nut Zippers "Hell"
Freaknasty "Da Dip"
Marcy Playground "Sex and Candy"
Daft Punk "Da Funk"
White Town "Your Woman"

Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, and Hanson were around but were not as big as people blow them up to be.  IMO, that was not until Britney, Christina, NSYNC, and Backstreet Boys came out in 1999.

In Canada and all over Europe the Backstreet Boys were very popular and they still are very popular here.  They were practically ignored in the US. Mostly because the record labels and top 10 radio wouldn't give them a chance to prove how talented they were.

It wasn't untill they dumped Lou Pearlman that their full potential was realized.  :)

Teen pop is pretty much 1998-2000 only. In the end of 2000, R&B artists already started getting more airplay and the Hip-Hop vibe started to dominate. 1997 I think there were still a lot of rap songs on the radio.

The more I think about it and look back at Billboard videos on YouTube, I see that teen pop wasn't really the dominant genre for music in the late 90s/early 00s. Sure it was popular and it got big during this time frame, but it wasn't the leading genre of mainstream music during that time. It seems R&B and late 90s/early 00s rap was taking over more and dominated the charts during this time period. Eminem was HUGE around this time and it was the time of his peak. Also, every second song was R&B or light Hip Hop and rap before crunk came in around 2003.

I actually think that no other era can compare to the 90s. And I would rank 1997 as the best year of music.

"Bleed Together" by Soundgarden and other grunge material was released in 1997. Early 1997 saw the release of songs such as "I'll Be Missing You" which was in memory of Biggie Smalls (Notorious BIG) and late 1997 saw the release of songs such as "Touch, Peel And Stand" by Days Of The New as well as "Together Again" by Janet Jackson. Neither of which I would associate with the movement. 1996 and 1997 may have co-STARTED the movement but it was 1998 that truly capitalized on it.

I think the reason teen pop seems to dominate is because the boy bands and girl singers were so huge that they kind of overshadowed everything, but you're right, the urban music of that time is unjustly forgotten. Though then again it wasn't that good.

I remember how big R&B was in 1998 with Sparkle(remember her?), R. Kelly, Tamia, Usher, Faith Evans, Jagged Edge, Public Announcement(that Yippie-Ya-Yo, Yippie-Ya-Yay) (Body Bumpin) song, Brandy, Monica, Next, Dru Hill, Divine, Total, Brian McKnight, and Ki-Ci & JoJo. I remember rap like Puffy, Mase, DMX, Master P, and Busta Ryhmes being big.

I remember thinking oh grunge music is gone and that was a good thing but than 1999 came around and teen-pop blew up big time and I wanted my grunge back. R&B became less popular when summer of 1999 came around only to come back in 2001-2002.

I was instantly a BSB (Backstreet Boys) fan when "Quit Playing Games" was released.  They were my favorite.  Also 5ive and Westlife.  That Bubble-gum pop style was fun back then.  When I look at old videos it feels so corny  :D Now I don't listen to any pop but mostly metal and alternative.  All through the 90's I listened to a bit of everything though.

"Get Born Again" and "Died" were two of a number of new songs on Music Bank from 1999.

I remember "When The Lights Go Out" by 5ive. Good song.

It's a shame they didn't get more attention in the States  :(

They had a good run in their native UK (10 hits between 1997-2001), their biggest was in 2001 called Let's Dance

Yeah I live in the States and actually have their self-titled album(5ive) collecting dust somewhere.

I loved the pop music revival that happened from early 1997 to 1999.  I mean New Kids on the Block were the first but by that time Jordan and Joe had gone solo.  :) Jordan was a little more successuful than Joe because Jordan was still doing poppy and dancable beats while Joe was doing gossipel music.  Not that there's anything wrong with gossipel music it's just not my cup of tea. :)
