Subject: 1990: In retrospect

Written By: Ryan112390 on 02/24/13 at 8:12 pm

Post here your memories of 1990, the big events of that year for you, what you remember about that year, discuss also the trends in fashion (men and women), hairstyles and clothes of 1990; the biggest music artists and the biggest movies and computer/video games. Basically just sum up everything you can recall about the first year of the '90s.

January 1, 1990:  The start of the 90s.  The year of one of the greatest albums of the 90s:  Golden Hits by Bert Kaempfert :D

Seriously though, one of my favourite albums of 1990:  1234 by the german pop group Propaganda
I remember this and still love it!

I turned just 10 years old in 1990, and I had started the 5th grade later that year in September. :)

Some of the songs/music I listened to in 1990:

The "Father Bush" era is weird in that it bridges the "Reagan '80s" and "Clinton '90s", with 1990 the meeting point. This was Hair Metal's last big year with Damn Yankees, Xtreme, and Jon Bon Jovi releasing a solo album. Rap (hip-hop wasn't being used as frequently) was more popular than ever with MC. Hammer and Vanilla Ice having the genre's first chart-topping albums, but still possesed that party/dance style. House music was suddenly more mainstream, though there was still freestyle influences to be found. I remember watching cable TV for the first time that year, and the cable box only went up to Channel 36 and it was all push button separate from the TV! But I would enjoy what the standard over-the-air channels broadcast the most, with the Big Three still carrying Saturday Morning Cartoons and syndicators showcasing afternoon cartoons. I only remember a vinyl record being used at kindergarten, as my parents had mostly used cassettes with just a few CDs (since cassettes were cheaper and cars didn't yet have CD players).

Pretty Woman, Home Alone, Dick Tracy, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles summed up the big blockbuster movies.

I entered kindergarten that September and remember being a little scared about ridiing the school bus the first time, and was especially terrified when the regular bus broke down (I had bus number 74) and the spare bus (178S) would make me believe I would be going somewhere else, failing to believe the 74 sign in the window.

Super Mario 3 was the game everybody wanted that year, and I even remember a news broadcast showcasing players beating the game. Game Boy was also popular and Sega was still seen as a secondary system that lacks a marquee game like Sonic the Hedgehog would a year later, despite the improved 16-bit graphics of Genesis/Mega Drive.

That said, it was a more innocent time looking back as since I had no clue that the WWW would forever hook us with the world just a few years later would make our world feel smaller.

1990 was a year I saw many films. Films like "Ghost", "Pretty Woman", "Hunt for red october", "Goodfellas", "Die Hard II ". It was a good year for films.

I was 27 for most of 1990. A year filled with a heck of a lot of fun (trips, dating, hanging out with friends, etc..)

Ah, 1990. I was starting a new life. I had just gotten out of the service at the end of Nov. 1989. I started out the year in Tulsa where I was staying with my sister. I had then moved to Vermont in March of that year. In May of that year, I met someone who moved in with me shortly there after and we were together for about 2 years or so.

Can't say it was a good year/bad year. It was a transitional year.

I was born in 1988 so 1990 is impossible for me to remember. But that year in August, my family moved out of Vietnam to the Phillipines and stayed until April of 1991, when we finally moved to America.

Gulf War started that summer as well. I remember watching those little green lights dancing over the black screen on CNN

Despite that it seemed like a fairly quiet/content year. Not a huge year for music. The big transition would happen in early autumn 1991 when grunge broke out. In 1990 hair metal was petering out but nobody knew what would replace it.

It was a huge year in movies. I remember having to wait on line with my dad to see Home Alone on Black Friday. Ghost, Pretty Woman, Dances With Wolves, Die Hard 2, The 3rd Back to the Future, Kindergarten Cop all came out in 90.

90210 also premiered that autumn, not that I cared as a 6 year old but it would go on to be a 90's staple

Let's see...in 1990 I was in "upper" elementary school. The first half of the year, I was in 4th grade. The second half, 5th grade. I went to different schools for each grade (i.e., changed schools after completing one grade), as things weren't working out well at the school I went to for 4th grade, although there were some good things that transpired during that year for me (like winning a spelling bee in May).

I, like a few of you other posters, began kindergarten in 1990 as well. Sometimes we would have students from an older grade come to our class and read stories to us. We also went on a field trip to the fire house and the police station. My personal highlight of that year involved my first trip to a major American city. My family and I visited Chicago over the Thanksgiving holiday with my grandparents tagging along.  I remember  trying to count the windows of the skyscrapers. Home Alone came out that December and every boy on the playground was doing his best McCauley impersonation.

1990 is when I first went to Disneyland  8)

I went there in August of that year with my family, and when we were browsing in the clock shop in Main Street, I came across a boy who was wearing the exact same clothes as me! I also found out that he had the same first name as me, and was also 10 years old at the time. My mom took a picture of us together, and I have that picture in one of my photo albums. I'll scan it in and share it when I have an opportunity.

In my personal life, 1990 wasn't one of my better years. It was just one of those years which so many things went wrong. I remember missing 1989, and 1988 even more.

Curt Smith was the last original member of Tears For Fears to leave the band perminantly; the first two being Manny Elias and Ian Stanley.  They cited the usual "creative differences" as the reason for the split.  But I think that there was a lot more going on than either of them cared to admit.

I was remembering all the panic attacks I used to have in 1990.  Sometimes I was in a state of hyperesthesia in which all the colors in my view shimmered and boiled like a Van Gogh painting.  Music ran a little too deep and a little too sonorously.  Lots of heart palpitations.  I had quit smoking weed months earlier.  It would have been psychedelic if it wasn't so scary!

This is when Dave Gahan started his downward spiral into heroin and alcohol.  Boy he was a mess throughout the 1990s.  I think the rest of the Ultra tour had been cancelled mid tour  because Dave was trying to get himself healthy.  :(
