Subject: What is up with so many 80s songs being sampled in the 90s

Written By: thenewtattoo on 06/06/13 at 9:13 am

In the later part of the 90s  a crap load of  80's  hits were being sampled in rap hits.
A big example being this.

Forget me Nots - 1982

Now what alot of you don't know this song was sampled for Will Smith's Men in black in Early 1997.

Men in Black 1997

A bunch of other songs with Mase & puff daddy also used songs from the 80s as samples.
So why exactly where the 80s retro so soon?  What exactly happened?

I don't know, but it seemed to happen a lot, even in later years. ::)

Another notable example is M.C. Hammer's 1990 hit "U Can't Touch This" sampling the 1981 Rick James hit "Superfreak."

As well as P-Diddy's 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You" (a tribute to Notorious Big) sampling the Police song "Every Breath You Take" ('83), with the chorus having almost the same melody (albeit slightly slower, with different lyrics of course).

Another example, although not a rap song, is "Hippychick" by Soho (1990), which utilizes the intro from "How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths (1984); this sequence is backed by a technobeat the rest of the way.

Another non-rap example:

Mariah Carey's 1995 hit "Fantasy" samples the rhythm track and musical backing of the Tom Tom Club's 1982 hit "Genius Of Love"... and even contains an interpolation of a few lines of that song late in the recording.

The rhythm track from "Genius Of Love" (just the drumbeat) seems to also appear in Mark Morrison's "Return Of The Mack" (1997 in the US).

sampling was hot at the time in the 1990's, rap artists wanted to take an 80's song and mix it in their lyrics.

And some 80s songs had sampling a of 70s songs.

My guess is they have a good beat and you can dance to them so why not?

Such as Rihanna's 2006 hit "SOS", which samples Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" throughout.

Pretty much. I can name a number of songs sampling 80's songs, but I can't say the same for 90's songs being sampled. Goes to show that 80's nostalgia is still prevalent. Here's another 90's tune that sampled an 80's song:
