Another one of these threads. OK. I shall answer this is the same way I answered the other ones.

1995 feels like yesterday to me. Probably because I am older.

Umm...I'm going to say yes. Just yes, lol. And also, everything from 1995 looks dated and old to me now. I don't know who that is in the photo you posted and this is a little bit off topic, but there was so much more fashion in 1995. Trust me on this I know because I wore it all back then. Anyway, I feel the fashion and trends are also dated. So yes 1995 looks old because it is. It's yesterday, it's gone, it's old.

You're right. I'm sure there was more fashion 90s looks then the whole flannel look. It was just one look though I put as an example of 1995 fashion. :)

Well I was born in '94 so I guess the year after I was born would look old to me.
However, certain films like Clueless don't seem that old to me, other than the pop culture references made of course. The youth fashion is similar just more baggy and grungy.
Though the settings and atmosphere look older, somehow the sets in 90s films seem to look more vintage, dated, and less colourful, if that makes sense.

1995 would look as "old" today as 1977 (think disco, polyester, 8-track tapes, typewriters) was then, and by today's retrospective, feels just as old-fashioned, but in different ways. It was the year I first knew what the Internet was and how it functioned to me. Yet there were still lots of '80s holdovers around, from many stores that hadn't yet had their makeovers, '80s songs on Hot Adult Contemporary radio mixed in with the currents, '80s sitcom reruns on non-nostalgia channels (think TBS, WGN, and some smaller independent TV stations), VHS was still king, and cassettes were still easy to find alongside CDs. Camera was still shot on film. Nowadays, there are fewer CDs available today than cassettes were in 1995, DVD is now seen as the dinosaur home video format, and communicating with people in other countries daily is an everyday occurance for the general public. Inflation, with some exceptions (gas prices, housing) has been lower since 1995 than it was from '77 to '95. But the level of political correctness in 1995 is much closer to today's than 1977's.

For someone in their 20s, it brings back nice childhood memories. For someone in their 30s, it brings back a time when they were high school/college aged when everyone was mainly single and childless, which means that generation has passed on and is no longer in the "youth" demographic, along with enjoying the hardcore music of the day, from post-grunge, gangsta rap, to techno music. For someone in their 50s, it brings back when they had little children and enjoyed raising them while still enjoying certain pop culture elements that were more family friendly along with some of the Celine Dion adult contemporary music.

The commercials from 1995 definitely show their age. This stuff has been "old" for awhile. Cultural references to the internet were still a brand new thing in 1995, and you don't really notice many references when looking back at the early part of that year.

Even a film like 'Goofy Movie' appears very mid-90s to me, even though the story and animation are both timeless.
I say this because of how the teens in the film dress and interact with each other, also the parody on Michael Jackson (which is really more 80s).

IMO after reading this article, there is a lot of reason to pick 1995 as the border year between "vintage" and "contemporary". It mentions the Netscape IPO that August, the same month that Microsoft released Windows 95 and suddenly made the Internet a "no looking back" technology. Sure, changes didn't happen overnight in terms of the necessity to have an online presence (compare 1996 to 2002 for instance). It also mentions the Oklahoma City Bombing that began the restrictions and increased securities that continue to be a great concern, with Columbine in 1999 being another measure even before the 9/11 attacks.  IMO 1995 is the most historically significant year of decade, more so than 1991 with recession, Gulf War, and the USSR breakup. Check out this book "1995: The Year the Future Began". It's another reason why the first half of the year feels much more "old school" than the second half.

1995 was a significant year no doubt.  I wouldn't go as far as to say it was bigger than the USSR breakup.  That changed the world in a far more profound way than the OKC bombing or Windows 95.  Thats not to say those things weren't very big deals, but when you look at the overall arc of history, the end of the Cold War was one of the biggest events of the 20th century.

I think it looks old. It doesn't look antiquated in the way the 1960s and before do, but it looks pretty damn dated now. It depends though, a news report or dance party from 1995 obviously would feel more obviously dated than a wedding or a sports game.

Advertising at many sports venues has changed significantly since then, and the cycle of players is much different. Only a few professional sports players who played in 1995 are still playing today, and players like Derek Jeter who were just young prospects then are now retired today. Many sports arenas today have lots of LED screens displaying their ads, compared to 1995 when it was just non-electronic ads. Watching a sports broadcast from 1995 only displays the scores at commercial break transitions and a few other key moments (right after a basket in basketball, when football players are coming up with a play). The late '90s had a rapid growth in providing constant in-game information, and the early-mid 2000s had a boom in electronic advertising. Sorry, but in the sports world, 1995 does feel "old".

I would also argue the Dot-Com era was mostly 1997 to early 2000. I might include 96 too, but only if I was being generous. 95 is too early probably. Sure some people had websites by then but I don't think the phrase "dot com era" had really taken off then. The Internet was only just fully privatized that year.

Yup. There were still some vestiges of the bubble as late as 2001 IIRC, but really it was mostly in 1999 and the earliest part of the year 2000. In 1995 surprisingly few people were using the Internet to make money.

Yeah, exactly and if we take it even more strictly, 1985 would be part of the dot com era as well, because that was the year when ".com" had been introduced.

It certainly feels very distant;
In my home we did not have a computer, nor mobile phone;
we took pictures on film; we even had a tv without remote control.
That's a big difference: the tech we had in house.
As a car we had the Ford Scorpio; the shape of it is different from today's cars;
and when someone says "draw a car", I will do it like that.

Dilbert in 1992:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-h8w_fifXOas/VPCLH_VeJmI/AAAAAAAAAi4/muDioNS1d4g/s1600/DilbertKnockKnock.jpg

Now, Dilbert in 1995:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0xHzmgUhbIc/Ugv-08YUBnI/AAAAAAAAY-Q/EM3bHDnkqeI/s1600/dilbert_etch-a-sketch.jpg

Notice any differences?

Dilbert was a computer geek comic for computer geeks. What happened between 1992 and 1995 is you went from say 2% of people in America being Internet users to maybe 15% at the very most. The dot com speculation bubble really didn't start until 1997 and that's what people mean by the "dot com" era.

While it's true the Internet was unknown to most in 1992 and pretty mainstream by 1995, the reality is most people didn't jump on the bandwagon for a couple years more.

I actually think the '50s have aged pretty well. Kitchens from the 50s don't seem like they're 60 years old; they can look surprisingly contemporary. The music is still pretty fun to listen to as well.

I think 50 percent of Americans had the Internet by 2001, so I'd say excluding old/very poor people it became "the norm" by 1998-99 to have the Internet at home.

Even then, though, most people only used it for half an hour a day or less. It's not like now where I can literally spend weeks doing practically nothing but taking walks, working, and going online!

The 1950s is very outdated but I do see the appeal, there was/is a classiness about it and a rosy and romantic look about the decade that will live on.

I think this calls for a look at the stats. Via Internet Live Stats, only 44 million people on the entire planet were using the internet in 1995. By August 2001, though, that number had skyrocketed to 500 million users worldwide, so, yeah, I'd figure that at that point probably close to 50% of Americans had internet access. Just for further reference, the number of worldwide internet users topped 1 billion in 2005, and finally topped 3 billion last year.

Another cool thing on that site is the charting of the website growth by year. In 1995, there were only 23,500 websites compared to 672 million in 2013!

The first picture of Leeds from 1995 looks very old. It could have easily been taken in the late 80s or early 90s, aswell. Plus: It has a yellowish/sepia tone and especially the cars make this photo pretty dated. There seem to be a lot 80s cars on the road.

1982 is another thing. Especially for younger people, who didn't experience this year, this might be another world. 1995 looks familar, at least to me, but definitely different from today.

It's a cover as poster is used for movies/gaming. That said, despite this when the "future" began, the fact is that now that 1995 is 20 years old means that its a generation removed from the present, though this book does give a good sense to those who are still stuck with an '80s/early '90s mindset. It was though the gateway to what makes us today, and will remain so until another revolution takes place. The last great revolution before that was in the 1960s, which was much more social than technological, with 1963 being a similar "future gateway" point. After all, Future Shock came out in 1972, so its not like its the first time people have said that the future is upon us. There was another book called "The Future Arrived Yesterday" that came out in 2009.

If you argue that the ".com age" equals the "www age", this era didn't start before 1995 or 1996, when companies finally started to add their URL to ads. I doubt that most people knew what ".com" was in 1993.

On the other hand you could argue that the ".com age" started in 1985 with the introduction of top level domains.

There was video on the Internet before then, but it was a pain in the ass to upload at those day's speeds and generally you had to get approved by the master of the site (Ebaum's world for example). YouTube made it so that anyone could post their own stuff automatically and that was a game changer. 2005-06 was around the time web speeds really get good enough for videos to be practical.

or what a WWW was.

There was a thread on this site, and most people didn't get internet before 1995.

I guess 93/94 was the 'preview' years before the explosion. Kind of like smoke then comes the fire.

1995 was a dull year like all years of the mid 90s. Seeing as how Clinton was the first ever President in the 21st Century, I refuse to see 1995 as "old".

More people knew about what ".com" was in 1993 than they did in 1992.

1993 was more like the 80s than 1996 in terms of how the internet existed in our culture.The vast majority of people in the U.S. didn't use it yet and didn't have a big understanding of what it was. Its cultural relevance at that point was modest, at best. 1995-96 was where it really took off and thousands of new websites started sprouting up, with major companies also beginning to enter the internet market.

In know what you mean, but what do the 80s have to do with it? There was also no internet culture between 1990 and 1993. Plus, the "non-internet-culture" of the first half of the 90s belongs to the 90s as well as the internet culture of the second half.

"It wasn't quite the World Wide Web yet, but everybody started hearing about this thing called "the Internet" in 1993. It was being called the Information Superhighway then."

1990-1992: "Still the 80s" (1990-'91 was the last of the 80s and start of the early 90s)
1993-1995: "The onset of the real 90s" (We're getting closer to 1999)
1996-1998: "We're Settled in" (Just about in 1999)
1999: "Beginning of the 00s and end of the 90s" (self explanatory)

I wouldn't lump 1996 and 1999; not even 1997 and 1999 - Especially if you claim that 1990 was the entire 80s decade in one year.
1999/2000 or 98-01 was its own little era.

"The 80s decade" was leading up to that one big moment. Who will ever forget the finale to Newhart or the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? They're classics and I was too old to be into the Turtles at the time anyway.
